there is a space between sda1 and /mnt btw
Oh alr
do them in order
Oke
its important the order
what else
And vmlinuz
any efi folder?
ok type mkdir efi
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=GRUB
then this
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
ok try rebooting now
Remove disk?
Alr
show me the list again
this is most likely a problem with how the parition was formatted for boot
Yes
what do you see
ok go to the sercurit tab
Ye
what do you see
Passwords
picture here pls
Io interface
press on secire boot
Enable?
disable
It is
Okey
there should be grubx64.efi in esp/EFI/GRUB
How check
Alr
ls
then cd boot
Same files as before
and ls
grub.efi?
Cd dot dot?
yep
no it goes up by one directory
Oh
so you go back to the boot foler
so ls and show me a pic something is wrong here
rm -rf efi
Done
Done
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=GRUB
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
then before you reboot check the boot directory
Done
make sure there is a grub.efi
yeah we are in chroot
cd /boot/EFI
No .efi
then ls
Yes im there
show me whats there

Grubx64.efi
cd GRUB then ls

try rebooting again, if it doesnt work this time the the boot partition was not formatted correctly

reboot
Nvm
hold the power button and try again
I did it
ok good
chroot?
Root isnt red
what happens is that there are two root when you were in the live cd
the root of the usb and the root of ur hard disk
now youre in the root of your hard disk
ur usb is out
you have a minimal arch installatiom on your computer now
Ill be back soon
ye me too
np š
Alr am back
So uh i want hyprland
I saw this one guy use an automatic config script tho
Shall i try it
That
But how do i check if my nvidia driver supports dkms drivers?
Or hypr
Where do.i check that
My gpu is 940m
Ah alr so i can install the package
But how?
Xd
Pacman -S nvidia
?
@turbid pawn
@grand moth would hyprland be your first wm?
Ah haya
Yes
I cant really do kde or gnome i think
Big ram usage
Plus i want hypr cause it looks amazing
@grand moth I would recommended awesomefor "my first wm"
that's mine
pretty easy
Gives me a default hypr
With no effort hopefully
Xd
So youre recommendin it to me cause its easy?
Or
it's a stepping stone to a different wm
Which
any
Wait i can switch em as much as i want?
Hmm so can ya help me in installin dkms drivers
For my nvidia gpu
@grand moth sudo pacman -Sy nvidia-dkms
@grand moth photo please
Why Sy?
Either do S or Syu
@copper lily they are in the iso
Oh
They look chrooted
Alr im doin it
@copper lily scroll up
I donāt see anything about using Sy
You shouldnāt use Hyprland as your first WM
Why not
Itās very difficult if you donāt understand how a WM is configured already
Iād personally recommend i3
i3 is a dynamic tiling window manager with clean, readable and documented code, featuring extended Xinerama support, usage of libxcb instead of xlib and several improvements over wmii
You can do that in any WM
You can make any window manager look like pretty much anything
Iāve never used it
Alr
Welp
Idk which one to use now
I guess awesome but
Idk how to install it
Or anything
sudo pacman -S awesome
Iāve never seen awesome recommended as a good first WM aside from from you
Install base-devel
So
pacman -S base-devel
Also youāre root rn so you donāt need to use sudo anyway
root doesn't need to use sudo
Do you have network access
Are you absolutely sure. Ping something.
Yea youāre not connected to a network
Wat tf
Might be my dumbass pc
It has connection problems
So how do i connect back?
Youāre booted into the system rn, right?
Do you have NetworkManager installed and running
No
Reboot into the ISO and chroot
Did you mount and chroot
Now
I gotta mount everything again?
Yes
Itās not that bad
I donāt know how your partitions are laid out
mount /dev/device /target/
mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot
Are you using Wi-Fi
No internet god damn
Yes i just connected
But
My pc sucks ass
And disconnects randomly
Wat now?
Did you install that?
Connect again and install it
Can you just use Ethernet or something
Can you tether with your phone?
No USB?
Nope
Run iwctl
In chroot?
Follow this when in iwctl https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Iwd#Connect_to_a_network
You mean out of chroot?
Ye i am
Now
Now
Enter the chroot
.
Done
1 sec
@grand moth take a photo please
@grand mothtype iwctl
Shit
I did it in chroot
What now
Oh i can cancel
Net config disabled
Enable it?
yes
sudo systemctl enable
sudo systemctl enable iwd
I tried
Too little space
God damn etf
Im not smart enough for this shit
Alr well now i have no idea what to do with my minimal arch install
Did you run that in the chroot
Yes
Alr
rooot!
Did you install it yet
systemctl enable NetworkManager
Disabled or not running
Disabled
@grand moth take a photo of that please
Thatās not what/how you needed to check
How?
Just reboot into the system
No
The system
Please tell me you ran this in the chroot
I did
run systemctl status NetworkManager
Great
Run nmtui
How
Autocorrect
.
Just like that?
Yes, nmtui
Thatās a TUI to connect to the network
Activate a Connection
Yes
As long as the service is running of course
Now what do you want to do
Alr so i want awesome then
Yes, thatās what the enable command you did earlier does
Install awesome
Yipp
How do you want to start it
Graphical login screen? Command line?
Graphical login screen
wow this time i didn't hear the ping sorry it's been an hour lmao
Lmao
Did you make a user for yourself yet
useradd -m yourname
Did
Whatās the username you chose
Nova
Uppercase n?
Yes
Wait what
ls /home
Nova
Send the actual output
How tf
Did you āforce-badname
Delete that user and make one thatās all lowercase
userdel -r Nova
I also have capitalized though ._.
I gtg
people freak out when i show them this
Byee, keep at it, I also installed like 3 days ago! arch is the best!
@grand moth dwm
You soon will, just gotta setup the user and stuff
Oh I mean you will use whatever you want
I just like de cuz i came straight from windows
what commands did you run?
Well
what was the last command?
so you now have deleted Nova
Yeah, also, teh convention is to use only small letters. I'm guessing before arch didn't allow capital letters. But my name is "Igris" on arch, and I have never faced a problem
But it doesn't matter
I actually don't know what you have done so far
š
So, tbh I never tried any of that. I only have tried KDE
:((
I can't help you from here
People here are great btw! The arch user stereotype is not true at all!
Yeah hahah
Sure
This is what it looks like out of the box, I never changed it. I only took the task bar from below to above, thats all.
: D
But kde and other DE are bloat though
But I have a nice GPU
most of the time the most efficient use of resources is not through the DEs
window managers are light and nice
LMFAO
window managers are the most arch btw esque ways of using arch
cs2?
oh
Arma 3 and terraria
i will try, after my finals
Ah okey
which are next week
Yepperos
if you struggle with getting the right driver for gpu, and activating the correct driver lemme know! I am going to sleep now, Its midnight.
Okey!
Thanky
Altho see
The thing is
With the hypr scrjpt
It does that automatically
Idk why i cant just do that
Hypr automatic config
See
Dat
I don't know much about this. But the linux installation basically gave you an opensource gpu driver, which you have to blacklist at somepoint, if you want to make use of the GPU. But maybe in your case you may not need to do that. If you don't hear the fans running when trying to run the GPU. or just run the command glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer" and it does not show the desired GPU, then know that you have not yet blacklisted the opensource driver, and you are not using the GPU.
Okey
Yeah the hypr
Does that
Finds the driver and configures it automatically
Amd gives u default hyprland
Thats nice, I had to struggle with that ; (
Yeah
I wanna use the script
But ari says no
Cause im a beginner
Seems better to use that but alr
Listen to those who already been using what you want to use
ari might be the one
so do it when he comes back
Yeah
Well idk what he uses
Not hypr
I think its kde aswell
Uh well ill go with awesome tho
Already installed it
I mean the arch users have tried everything, so doesn't matter, they prolly know alot
Ye xd
I sometimes use Hyprland on my laptop because of the touchpad gestures (looking into newm-atha though), but usually just use XFCE. On my desktop I use i3.
Ah okey
Idk i really dont like how i3 looks like
Plus it says its made for programmers n stuff
Alr so what do i have to do to use awesome as my wm?
My desktop looks nothing like i3 does by default. Really, you can make WMs look like anything
Ill do it tommorow
Okey
But idk how to
Thereās nothing that actually requires you to be a programmer
Yeah ik
But its made for em
And idk how to customize it like you do
So whacha want me to use?
Youāll learn
Iād prefer that you use i3 but itās up to you
Configuration files are different, different functionality, different documentation
What
If youāre asking which one is better, I canāt answer that. Also WM preferences are highly subjective.
Yeah uj
Well why would i3 be better than like awesome
If theyre so subjective
I want one that looks gud
And is relatively good in general
Itās easy and has great documentation as well as online discussions about issues/help with it going back many years.
Iāve never used awesomewm so I donāt know how good it is, especially for a new user
Ping me when youāre ready to get going tomorrow. Iāll respond as soon as possible.
I may not reply immediately, fyi. Iāll probably be in school.
Yeah okey
@grand moth sorry was night here
went to sleep
Anyways, I read what you guys have been doing. First of all you already installed iwd so you do not need networkmanager
Second, I don't suggest using wayland. Xorg has a much longer history which equals much more support that wayland will not replace for a while.
Third, I wouldn't suggest installing a desktop environment like kde, gnome, etc... I wouldn't recommend using any scripts neither. The whole point of installing arch is to setup everything from ground up the way you like it . If youre gonna use a DE anyways, then it would have been better to use another distro like ubuntu pop etc
Fourth, there are alot of windows manager you could use with Xorg but my personal bias is i3. I managed to setup everything using i3
@proud storm that last sentience was wrong
which the DE?
How come? DE are bloated to make everything work from the start. You hardly have control of what a DE does. Ricing them can be much more difficult than a WM. Ubuntu and other distros already come with DE, so I dont see many reasons to go through the trouble of installing arch just to get a DE
then why can you install a de on arch then?
everything = bloat
if you are going to use a kernel go back to ubuntu then
using a monitor = go back to ubuntu
keyboard? go back to ubuntu
Arch still has some advantages over other distros. AUR for example. One might like how gnome just werks but may also want a package manager like AUR. My point is gnome and other DE include stuff that you may not use
you can remove them
That's were my point comes. Its difficult to remove them. VERY much. Sometimes you'll need extensions, sometimes you cant find an extension that does what you want.
you can remove packages? go back to ubuntu
you can install packages? go to ubuntu
anything? go back to ubuntu
gatekeeping arch
bro no need to get heated. I am just saying my experience from them. For example, the default display manager has no way you can edit its wallpaper. The only way is very much bugged and maintained by a single person. Replacing it with lightdm introduces all sorts of graphical glitches (maybe due to interaction with the default compositor)
I am not gatekeeping bro
Like I said arch has some stuff you want to use
I would understand installing a DE on arch is better than going back to ubuntu since there are some stuff you can use
I used kde on arch, now I am on dwm
Great, to each his own. I was just telling @grand moth my opinion. He seems like he wants to learn how to rice desktops and imo ricing is much better when using a wm since youve got more control
If he wants a DE regardless, then I am not stopping him, I can show him how to do so
Well i never said i wanted a de
I always said from the start
That i want a wm??
Alsp hay gud mornin
@proud storm
So wat wms are xorg?
I shall use those if ya think theyre da best for me
And ye i wanna learn ricing
I wanna make my wm look as best as i can make it look
Oh wait ure also tellin me to use i3
And so is ari
Why did you make those sentences in a way that makes it seem like i want a de?
Which i have never said in these 2k messages we got in this channel
I wanted to do i3 aswell now
Yo, I was just pointing out advantages/disasdvantages of using DE. Also doesnt matter what wm you use, personally I use i3
one sec
im back
O hay
Im in school rn
So pic?
Btw ive never used a wm before so yea
OH
GOD DAMN
That looks friggin amazing
I want smth like dat!
Btw why do ya blur out yo host name?
Should i do that too when sharin neofetch?
thanks, nah no need to blur i just do it for the sake of privacy
Ah okey
So ye
I would love to get smth like dat
Same transparency
Colour
Is kewl
Altho darker blue
ty ty ill show ya how to install i3 later, gotta go run some errands now
cool cya
I installed i3 today! using xinit, It's great but I don't like the fact that I can't set a background image without a compositor
I guess I should just use picom
But yeah, gotta say Window Managers could the thing for me! I'm a KDE plasma user.
Ooh
Compositor?
Whats dat
He uses a comp i think
He has da kewl image
Also show me ya rice!
I havent setup i3 yet, I can use it though
I just have a normal background
Oh okey
oh, didn't you setup the users yesterday?
have you set the passwd for the user?
Idk xd
How can you log into nova then?
Don't forget to set the passwd, other wise you won't be able to use the user
Okay
There is absolutely nothing wrong with setting a root passwd
passwd as root
Itās less secure and not necessary, but thereās inherently nothing wrong with it.
Where
Cya
Alr
Am home
Also see
It asks me for da pass
If i type nothin in its wrong
So i dont need a root pass?
@copper lily
Ill remove it and make my user then
Btw i havent made the swap partition
I wanna do dat now too
@proud storm
No idea which one of ya 2 is more knowledgeable
So ill ping both xd
Sorry Iām busy rn
@grand moth use the password you made during the installation
