Pray tell, what is your fine OS

Idk much about ntfs but I assume it's a matter of altering the permissions of the file, that bit address should point you to the file in question

#

How exactly you'd go about doing that, idk

gparted is pretty amazing from my experience

#

can you not do it with windows built in partition manager?

#

gparted

#

etch the iso onto bootable media and boot into it, launch the program and resize

#

it’s super easy

#

yeah

#

it doesn’t matter how you get gparted lol

#

i use balena etcher but some people don’t like it bc of the advertising on the app

try cfdisk

Flash puppy linux onto a usb drive and resize your drive from it.

#

I used FossaPup for this

Could you please divulge unto me the present situation with meticulous detail.

#
  • What is your partition layout lsblk -f and fdisk -l
  • Which partition contains what OS, and what are their purpose
  • What is your target partition layout
#
  • And what is the file system of the partition you want to shrink?
#

Windows should have a disc manager that can show you the current disc layout.

#

Would you kindly furnish me with a screenshot of it?

#

Is it C: You want to shrink

#

How have you tried to shrink it in the past?

#

So you haven't tried shrinking the partition yet.

#

Birimi taşınamaz dosyalanın bulunduğu noktanın ötesinde küçültemezsiniz.
You cannot shrink a volume beyond the point where any unmovable files are located

#

This explains itself

#

The most common "unmoveable" files are files which are locked during normal computer operation such as virtual memory/pagefile/system restore files as well as a few other files which may be open, but not running "in memory"

#

The simple solution to this straightforward question may be readily gleaned by simply searching on the web.

latent panther
#

Nowhere hath the tidings of such reached mine ears

#

Try resizing it from the Windows installation media, if you still have it.

#

Scolde you deign to delve into the depths of web and seek a solution to the shrinking of your storage space, then a mere search term of **"windows shrink drive $Mft::$BITMAP" ** shall summon forth three foremost findings that explicate the essence of the enigmatic dilemma.

#

Defrag is needed in this case because Windows thinks that the immovable object is at the logical end of the drive.

#

You can't shrink it if there are files there occupying the space

latent panther
#

The SSD has evolved to be accessed randomly, but the operating system hasn't.

#

Thus in this matter, you defragment to move the immovable mass somewhere else.

#

cfdisk

ik

#

i just checked

#

im sorry

latent panther
#

Use whatever pleases you

#

have you not beheld the trio of hyperlinks I previously disclosed, wherein each proffers a defragmentation technique, aided by a tool

nimble badge
#

You don't wanna move it to the end

#

Can't GParted do this?

latent panther
#

Read the manual, and try it.
However, please be advised:

Just a tip you don't wanna be moving system files of an operating system that's currently running

Well it won't allow you to anyway

latent panther
#

So try using the Windows installation media to do it

#

I consider it as an accomplishment that you regard me as LLM, and I thank you for that.

grammar checker

timber sinew
#

This thing is really helpful

latent panther
#

I take grammar very seriously

#

Anyway try to use the Windows installation media to do this. SHIFT+F10 to open cmd

nimble badge
#

Just have perfect grammar

latent panther
#

Copy it to another drive, satisfied?

#

Thus, you can use it from the command prompt (SHIFT + F10) that comes with the installation media

#

Farewell then

#

Resizing on a live OS is probably not a bright idea. Even if the master file table lets you through, page files and virtual memory may stop you.

#

That's what Windows does

#

Preferably.

#

I have no idea if gparted can move MFT,

#

Or more specifically, NTFS-3G.

latent panther
#

Doesn't Ventoy support a boot ISO on a USB drive?

No, I'm making an observation based on various instances of assistance I've seen him provide
