I want to use linux as my main OS, and wipe windows off my pc, but I cant because wifi never worked with this usb wifi adapter. It worked perfectly on windows. Can someone guide me as to what to do or where to find drivers to download because I've never installed a driver manually on linux before. Ps. I'm writing this on my pc but I'm using USB tethering with my phone to access internet.
#Fedora or any distribution is not detecting my usb wifi card ("Realtek RTL8188ETV")

So which distro are you using currently?
post output of uname -r
@tulip parrot
i removed it, i used fedora with kernel 6.3.something
oh
spent 3-4 hours trying to fix it
well

endeavour
consider opensuse tumbleweed
when you install it, run dmesg to see what is going on
you might be missing firmware for the wifi adapter
what are your requirements? do you use it primarily for gaming?
i dont care much about the ui, ive just read that ext4 is better for android studio than windowses ntfs filesystem (faster build times), and im currently studying android dev stuff
so i would like to use it
ive used arch before with i3, im not a total beginner
endeavour is beginner
installed arch a couple of times before archinstall was a thing
why not start with an easy (beginner-friendly) distro then? Linux Mint or Ubuntu
did you install linux-firmware
first tell me what distro to download im currently on windows
I would recommend Linux Mint if this is your first time using Linux
if you liked arch then endeavouros is arch but with a friendly installer
i have i7 2700k rx570 8gb vram with 16gb ram
i only dont want lxqt desktop environment because i dont like its ui
Just because the kernel version is old, that does not mean that it will have WiFi issues
i personally suggest opensuse tumbleweed https://www.opensuse.org/#Tumbleweed
if you want something simple, use linux mint
also i have another question, another thing i had to fix after wifi (couldnt even fix the wifi in the first place)
i use fast boot on windows
don't
which enables me to sort of hibernate
if i disable fast boot
my psu turns off
entirely
Don't use fast boot it will fuck up your wifi on linux
and i have to turn it off phyiscally on the 0 button then 1
is there some sort of hibernation thing on linux
Btw I remember this popular checklist for getting support in my early days of linux.
The first was dissing the forums with nothing works and then all flock to help and "prove" you wrong.
XD
linux has hibernation yes but you need a swapfile
tf you mean no, I've literally helped many threads with this before here
yea
i dont know how to describe it but when i disable fastboot my pc turns off entirely, but my psu turns off then, with fastboot on, the pc is turned off but the psu still has power and i dont have to manually reset it
i didnth ave dual boot, thats not the case
i wiped windows entirely
i meant is there a thing like fastboot on linux, because practically i cant use my pc without it
when i turn it off i have to manually reset the PSU and its annoying
(i know the psu has a fault but this workaround worked for a year)
Ah, never heard of a bios fast boot thing
Maybe you means Secure boot?
don't think so
i mean this helps me not fuck up my psu
so is an effect like this possible on linux or not
i dont have fast boot in bios at all
so thats not the problem with wifi
bro im not using windows in conjunction with linux
when i installed fedora earlier this day i wiped windows
Can you explain more? Wdym by manually reset it?
Is the psu broken or smthg
with fast startup off in control panel
-> turn off my pc
-> come to it after an hour or so
-> i press the power button
-> nothing happens
-> have to press 0 on the PSU switch in the back of my computer case, disable the cable press 1 and enable it
-> then i can press the power button and it turns on but it forgets my bios settings, have to disable cpu fan warnings and overclock cpu again
hm i havent tried shutting down on linux and waiting to see if it would work
i can test it out, but i need to get wifi sorted out
Did this happen on Fedora with no windows?
Oh they haven't tried it on linux? my bad
i havent tried this on fedora at all
maybne it doesnt have that issue
but wifi doesnt work
so i practically cant use my pc
im saying the 'sleep' thing or hibernation with fast startup is what helps me use my pc as a normal one, with it disabled it doesnt work as i described above
Try it again and post the output of lspci -v?
That could tell what driver's being used
obviously i have a cmos battery, but reseting the psu to 0 and 1 empties it somehow
You should try shut downs on linux and see if it persists. If it does then that means there's something wrong with your hardware
actually after clikcing 0 and 1 and then turning on it says press f1 to config
and it never says that usually
how? isnt fast startup just a windows word for hibernation
asus P8P67pro
this is my mobo
i got the pc used a year ago
i use it with faststartup on windows, everythings fine with it enabled, but havent tested on linux
but i cant test it on linxu cuz my wifi doesnt work
no reason to test it out
Are you going to try it again?
on windows even with faststartup disabled, i can shut down
entirely
and then turn it on
after 5minutes
it only bugs out when i leave it for an hour
or more
the psu has an issue i think im not sure
yes but what distro should i download
Maybe faststartup keeps some stuff running and the board powered so the CMOS backup isn't used?
maybe the shutdown thing wont be an issue on linux
thats what im thinking also, because when i move my mouse the sensor is still on
with faststartup off the sensor is not on on the mouse
which says that there is some voltage still in the mobo
is there like a low power mode on linux
yes, but is there a thing like that on linux
I've used Sleep and suspend. They work well
i do programming and some gaming on steam, nothing else really
python, javascript, c++ for college and now im learning dart for flutter
How does Lang matter?
I'm curious
but you can use gcc on linux
why would i use vs on linux, makes no sense
i said on windows it is the saving grace for c++ development
its good, great even, for windows
in the windows world its praised for its ease for code scaffolding, project setup, etc etc etc
it has a ton of features
so what distro should i download endeavour or
is linux mint fine or
ive used linux mint on my previous pc for a month straight
on linux you can do sudo pacman -S zlib and then gcc -lz
no fucking around with anything required
i just want my wifi to work lol
and i assume android studio works out of the box on linux cuz android uses linux internally anyway
also if you have experience with arch then i recommend endeavour, rolling release is great for development
and yea android studio just installs fine
i dont have much experience in arch other than installing it and configuring i3 for it
doesnt shit break on arch all the time
no
Imo try Debian based or Fedora,
Idts they're interested enough in Linux (right now, possibly after a distro they might be) to "learn" arch
i watched this lol
i just used fedora and i couldnt install the driver for r8188, it said missing kernel headers for 6.3 and when i wanted to install them they didnt exist in the repositories
latest one was 6.2.5 something
6-7
yes
Ummmm, did you try installing a different version of driver for a different kernel?
Manual or archinstall?
couldnt find a different version of the driver
manual
okay
by the way will i be able to have 75hz refresh rate on arch, i had it available on fedora
Kde cuz windows stan
dont know, i like gnome but it feels heavy kinda dont know how to explain
x doesnt support over 60hz?
oh
If you like the win10ui you'll like kde
ive used kde before its not bad but i dont like the ui too much looks cluttered, gnome is a bit more simplistic to me
Cool, gnome is good
so the only differnece i will install wayland instead of x server
wym
okay
i installed xorg-server before and in xinit ran the things
actually that was before i installed a displaymanager
nevermind
and how terrible it is for example to change from a de to another de in linux
will it brick the systme
lets say later on you want a tiling window manager
and you delete the gnome package
idk siv said he recommends reinstalling the system if you want to use a window manager
why reinstall to switch
i thought tahts a windows thing to leave behind residue lolol
that you have to delete manually in %temp% folders and appdata
If any config files overlap then you can just delete them
Also the non wm de stuff
Defaults, apps
i dualled kde and dwm for a long time it's doable. you don't notice much
config files are in home tho, just clean .config, .cache, .local/share and it should be fine
These kinds of files are managed by pacman, so when you uninstall it should be clean.
this is my last try at linux, if wifi doesnt work this time i aint trying it ever again
Wifi cards are very cheap btw. If you really want to use linux and your card isn't supported you can get one for cheap if that's an option
there are a limited amount of them on the local marketplace
im from eastern europe its not like i have access to ebay
shipping is like 80$
ive just decided to use arch inside vmware
for my operating systems class, and when i need linux for some things
😑
