I looked in the nvidia-settings and noticed when I do "save to configuration file" -- i do a preview and i noticed this in the settings. It knows it's got 240hz.

#

i tried to put it in the xorg

#

no luck.

#

i tried to revert to nvidia-525xx and that didnt work

#

i went back to the usual driver (nvidia-dkms and all the rest)

#

figures

#

"make a post, you're likely to get more answers there"

.. okay!

#

looks like i'm talkin' to myself. ;/

#

.. oh well.

opaque cloakBOT
cloud steppe
#

had to block that bot.'

cloud steppe
#

I can't figure it out. It's some sort of configuration issue.

earnest belfry
#

what DE

#

have you tried nvidia's settings tool?

#

or xrandr?

cloud steppe
#

cinnamon

#

lightdm

#

yes and yes

earnest belfry
#

what was the result? huh

#

what happened when you tried those?

cloud steppe
#

... it just shows 120 now for my monitor instead of 240

opaque cloakBOT
cloud steppe
#

it used to show 240

#

it's a config problem

#

and i dont know where it is to fix it

#

when i got into nvidia settings

#

just listen

earnest belfry
#

so xrandr says that your monitor's maximum refresh rate is 120?

cloud steppe
#

yes

#

just listen to me

earnest belfry
#

this happened to me when I physically set the monitor's settings and disabled something like freesync

#

are you sure you haven't done that?

#

or the reponse time on the monitor settings

cloud steppe
#

freesync isnt available

#

its not a good enough card

earnest belfry
#

then the response time? anything?

cloud steppe
#

not display port

earnest belfry
#

have you not modified the monitor's physical settings?

cloud steppe
#

i havent done anything ot the monitor settings actually.

#

aside from changing 120 to 60 with xrandr

#

but it wont do 240

#

sigh.

#

and i have not

#

its the way it is before.

#

it isnt changed

#

i never fucked with the OSD or anything

#

didnt need to

#

i did try different cables

#

but beyond that, no

earnest belfry
#

"I looked in the nvidia-settings and noticed when I do "save to configuration file" -- i do a preview and i noticed this in the settings. It knows it's got 240hz."

cloud steppe
#

different cables and ports

earnest belfry
#

so nvidia settings did set the rate correctly?

#

you just can't save it?

#

or?

cloud steppe
#

no look

#

just look

#

this is an xorg config

cloud steppe
#

thats what it sees when i click "save x configuration file"

#

yes

#

and i click preview

#

and i saw that

#

so it KNOWS

#

it sees 240

#

so i know it's not like.. not seeing the availability

#

i dont use their xorg file

earnest belfry
#

and in the GUI nvidia settings app it's not there?

#

it's only in the config preview?

cloud steppe
#

i have my own custom ones

#

correct

#

it only shows up to 120.

hard plaza
#

I have an integrated GPU as well, and no, i don't really use the integrated one
What do you mean by this? Is this a laptop or a desktop?
Also, nvidia-xconfig and nvidia-settings adding stuff into xorg.conf's cause issues rather frequently. Better have clean, empty xorg.conf.

cloud steppe
#

laptop

#

i can show you my custom x

#

that i've used for 3 years now

#

and there is zero wrong with it

#

its not that. it's some sort of configuration somehwere

#

it happened after i installed optimus-manager

hard plaza
#

Are you disabling the iGPU and running the graphical session with the Nvidia GPU?

cloud steppe
#

you can't

#

here

hard plaza
cloud steppe
#

let me show you.

#

i hate optimus-manager

hard plaza
#

yes why do you have it?

cloud steppe
#

just was trying it because i was trying passthrough

#

i was just trying stuff

#

didnt think it would do this

#

i removed it

earnest belfry
#

nvidia-settings --assign="RefreshRate=240"

#

try this

cloud steppe
#

i will try it now

#

un momento

earnest belfry
#

smh I knew nvidia-settings had a CLI interface so now I'm trying to find documentation

cloud steppe
#

[nitro@NITRO5 ~]$ nvidia-settings --assign="RefreshRate=240"

ERROR: The attribute 'RefreshRate' specified in assignment 'RefreshRate=240'
cannot be assigned (it is a read-only attribute).

[nitro@NITRO5 ~]$ sudo nvidia-settings --assign="RefreshRate=240"
[sudo] password for nitro:

ERROR: The attribute 'RefreshRate' specified in assignment 'RefreshRate=240'
cannot be assigned (it is a read-only attribute).

#

nope.

#

i also tried the /etc/environment variables

#

no go

hard plaza
#

I think you should clean up what optimus-manager and nvidia did to your xorg.conf, then try xrandr on a clean configuration.

cloud steppe
#

i did

#

nvidia did nothing as i did not save it

#

i will show my xorg now.

#

my custom xorg

hard plaza
#

ok

cloud steppe
#

its the only way this will work as a dual monitor

#

this makes the monitor primary by default, the dedicated GPU

#

the integrated AMD stays on the laptop still

#

works well

earnest belfry
#

interesting how other attributes work

#

nvidia-settings -a "SyncToVBlank=0" works for me

cloud steppe
#

oh god no

#

Attribute 'SyncToVBlank' (NITRO5:0.0) assigned value 0.

#

i dont know if that'll help

hard plaza
#

for what specific reason did you add that config?

cloud steppe
#

because i wanted "dual monitors"

#

so to speak

earnest belfry
#

what error did you get when you tried wayland?

cloud steppe
#

thst why

hard plaza
#

It should only be needed to make some options on nvidia-settings work

cloud steppe
#

i dont remember

earnest belfry
#

do you have the DRM modules loaded?

cloud steppe
#

it was justa blank screen, i did no dmesg, it was quite some time ago

#

nvidia_drm i think

#

ill check lspci

hard plaza
#

pacman -Qs "(mesa|nvidia|nouv|xf86-video|optimus)"
lspci -k | grep -C 3 -i vga

earnest belfry
#

Add the modules nvidia , nvidia_modeset , nvidia_uvm and nvidia_drm to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and run the command sudo mkinitcpio -P
Add the kernel parameter nvidia-drm.modeset=1 to /etc/default/grub and run the command sudo update-grub

#

did you try this when you tried wayland?

#

this always worked for me

#

I have a gtx 1050

#

after I did this and rebooted all wayland compositors just worked

#

I don't have nouveau loaded

cloud steppe
#

i loaded it manually

#

that wasnt an anamoly

earnest belfry
#

this is really hard

cloud steppe
#

i loaded it because i was uninstalling drivers for gfx and needed display

earnest belfry
#

you seem to know what you're doing

cloud steppe
#

yes i do

earnest belfry
#

good luck

cloud steppe
#

i have been using linux for 15 years.

earnest belfry
#

5 years here

cloud steppe
#

i just haven't blacklisted it yet, although that isn't necessary

#

and yes this is difficult

#

its some configuration issue

#

i gotta figure it out.

#

i dont know where the hell its at

#

i dont know what got configured

hard plaza
#

You are trying to set up and fix everything through Nvidia land, while your laptop's graphics is driven by the iGPU. I find this to be at least a convoluted way.

cloud steppe
#

i think im gonna have to look into optimus

#

@hard plaza close.

#

they both need each other

#

so i decided to literally give them correct drivers

#

it's worked well for 3 years now

earnest belfry
#

what does the iGPU do when the nvidia module is loaded?

cloud steppe
#

without xorg?

#

its amdgpu so

#

wouldnt matter

#

and it works fine

#

lol

#

because you can do modesetting for it

#

but if we mean no config, empty xorg, it wouldnt work

earnest belfry
#

so when you tried wayland you just got a black screen?

cloud steppe
#

it needs to be plugged in with this configuration

#

that is correct

earnest belfry
#

what compositor was it?

cloud steppe
#

i dontw anna talk about wayland

earnest belfry
#

oh ok

cloud steppe
#

i say this

#

look int he post

hard plaza
#

Optimus laptops work best with doing no config at all.
In the past, you needed stuff like optimus-manager.
There has been many cases here where issues were solved just by removing everything done on the system regarding GPUs and graphics.

cloud steppe
#

no wayland

earnest belfry
#

i also love how your type indicator is turned off 😂

hard plaza
cloud steppe
#

igpu if i had no xorg and nvidia loaded without amdgpu

#

you asked about my integrated graphics

hard plaza
#

i don't understad

cloud steppe
#

i think you dont exactly know what this is

#

it's muxless

#

they work together

#

they're not 100% separate

hard plaza
#

yes, just like mine

cloud steppe
#

sigh

#

well then you should understand.

#

stop asking questions about what it does with nvidia is loaded, nothing bad happens

#

just what should happen

#

if it sees an incorrect driver

hard plaza
#

ok, it seems you are not open to help

cloud steppe
#

um

#

it seemed irrelevant

#

thats all

hard plaza
#

I personally helped at least 3 people here that had issues with their Optimus laptops

cloud steppe
#

im not trying to shut help down

#

that's great, but this isnt the same thing as getting them to work is all im saying.

earnest belfry
#

nvidia-settings --query RefreshRate

#

does this just print out your current refresh rate?

#

Attribute 'RefreshRate' (pc:0[dpy:2]): 165.00 Hz.
'RefreshRate' is an integer attribute.
'RefreshRate' is a read-only attribute.
'RefreshRate' is display device specific.
'RefreshRate' can use the following target types: X Screen, GPU, Display Device.

cloud steppe
#

see @earnest belfry is actually doing what i asked

#

which is trying to come up with a solution.. i mean i'm out o fideas

#

so how would i be closed to help

#

Jesus Christ.

#

everyone gerts offended

earnest belfry
#

I remember when I "overclocked" my 60hz monitor to 73hz by modifying the EDID? (i don't remember really), it was like 3+ years ago

cloud steppe
#

THAT is cool

earnest belfry
#

so I could add custom refresh rates just like on windows

#

so wouldn't that help here?

cloud steppe
#

it could

#

but.. i do want to find the root cause here

#

however

#

yes we can try some shit

earnest belfry
#

is this 1080p?

cloud steppe
#

it is

#

always has been

earnest belfry
cloud steppe
#

okay this likely wont work.. but i have nothing to lose

hard plaza
cloud steppe
#

i did -nnk earlier..

#

jesus

cloud steppe
#

07

#

thats not gonna work now

#

it wasnt even systemd then

#

it was init

#

so

#

im not gonna be able to do what i need to do

#

its my job

#

like theres a reason they gave me a laptop with a 1650 in 2019, that wasnt bad back then

#

im fucked i guess, like im getting fucked in the ass by optimus-manager

cloud steppe
#

^ you asked for lspci

#

i gave you everything

#

alright he saw it

#

thats all i was wondering

hard plaza
#

I was just confused because your reply to lspci -k earlier did not include the amd gpu.

cloud steppe
#

um

#

it just showed the two VGA active

#

i didnt show you everything

#

but this time i did

gleaming topaz
# cloud steppe not display port

I can’t search threads so I may have missed something, but have your tried using DP? Most high end monitors can’t reach their rated specs with HDMI.

cloud steppe
#

this doesnt have display port

gleaming topaz
#

Weird

cloud steppe
#

the laptop doesnt anyway

#

has hdmi

gleaming topaz
#

So the monitor does?

#

Have DP, that is

cloud steppe
#

it does

gleaming topaz
#

That’s probably your issue then

#

Try a thunderbolt to DisplayPort adapter if your laptop has a thunderbolt port

cloud steppe
cloud steppe
#

and that would not work ayway

#

i tried dhmi to dp

gleaming topaz
cloud steppe
#

no go.

gleaming topaz
cloud steppe
#

same reason display port would not work

#

doesnt have one..

gleaming topaz
cloud steppe
#

yes

#

correct

#

that has nothing to do with what i was just saying if you read it

#

i think you might have thought i was trying to say the lightning to dp wouldnt work

gleaming topaz
hard plaza
#

and you mentioned it worked before and started not working only recently, so the port is probably not the issue

cloud steppe
#

the port is fine man

#

i tried multiple cables

#

HDMI cords

#

different ones

#

just to make sure

#

theres no difference in HDMI 1 or 2

#

this is a gaming and graphics monitor

gleaming topaz
#

What I’m saying is that HDMI of any kind probably won’t work.

cloud steppe
#

wont work with what.

gleaming topaz
#

We’ll see I guess. I’ll keep an eye on this thread.

cloud steppe
#

i asked

#

wont work with... what?

gleaming topaz
cloud steppe
#

what are you even... talking about? i think you are thinking im trying to argue a point and im absolutely not

#

no, that's incorrect

#

it's been 240 for 3 years.

gleaming topaz
#

Okay then

cloud steppe
#

so you're wrong, dead wrong, sorry

#

120 is now what it is, optimus-manager had some warning as well when i had installed it for stupid reasons..

gleaming topaz
#

Ok

cloud steppe
#

just because i wanted something to work so bad

#

the warning was about the power not being controlled so it would always be at max

#

thats all, but i think there's more

#

i dont know where to find this

#

it's a config

#

i know it

#

this is NOT a hardware issue

#

let's get that straight, that way there is no confusion

#

alright?

#

go figure.. im just being direct

#

im not trying to offend anyone

#

i am realizing what im saying looks bossy and annoying

#

pretentious

#

my apolgies.

#

apologies*

#

@gleaming topaz

#

I'm sorry

cloud steppe
#

interesting tidbit of information...

#

when i take the nvidia card down to further resolutions, i can only only do up to 60hz. it should be going higher if i go down further in resolution, not lower...

cloud steppe
#

its a driver issue

#

i downgraded to the one right before 530.x

#

gonna need to add taht to ignorepkg

#

let me make sure

cloud steppe
#

yeah, it was a driver issue.
