#laptop doesnt wanna connect to specific wifi network

Please follow the Standard Litany when asking a question:
• What was your environment? What was your operating system, configuration?
• What did you do? What did you run or test? Where?
• What actually happened? What were the exact results, complete log contents, exact error messages?
• What did you expect? What were you aiming to achieve? What result were you looking for?
Vague or superficial questions will yield vague or superficial answers. False information leads to false solutions.
arch, on an asus laptop, I didnt do anything I got home and it just wont connect. When I enter the password it says configuring, then either refuses to connect saying it failed or asks me to re enter the password
my phone can connect to the wifi though, and my laptop can connect to my phone mobile hotspot
What network manager? And please show the full error
just the base network manager that comes with archinstaller, I havnt changed anything about it
il try get a ss of the error but it just pops up in the notifications
Have you tested it with other networks? If you don't have another connection you can use, you could try to connect to a phone hotspot to test
yeah I can connect to phone hotspot
I'm sorry i'm not sure which network manager archinstall uses by default. It's probably networkmanager tho. You can verify using pacman -Q | grep networkmanager and post the output here.
Also how are you connecting, through the command line? Or do you use a desktop environment with an applet.
If so, what desktop environment.
desktop environment, im running KDE as my display manager so its got the little gui in the bottom right
<command to print output> |& curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io
journalctl -b |& curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io
It will give you a link once you perform this command, send it here
coud not resolve ix.io
to speed things up the network it wont connect to is BT-65AJSQ
Alright, have you tried deleting the connection and then retrying?
I didnt do anything I got home and it just wont connect
Did it work before?
Did you turn your router off and on again? :D
its my gf wifi network ive never used this laptop with arch on it before
yeah still not working
hmm
So you installed Arch in your girlfriend's home?
I did the same :D
Couldn't sleep
can you do pstree -T ?
nahhhh I did it at uni, were just at hers for a few days
Do this please systemctl list-units --type service --no-pager and post the output
pstree -T```systemd─┬─NetworkManager

LOAD = Reflects whether the unit definition was properly loaded.
ACTIVE = The high-level unit activation state, i.e. generalization of SUB.
SUB = The low-level unit activation state, values depend on unit type.
33 loaded units listed. Pass --all to see loaded but inactive units, too.
To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.
shit just dont wanna connect
two ideas:
- dhcp issue or too many devices in that home. your laptop cannot get an IP.
- your wifi card does not support 5G and the wifi is 5G. or another unsupported wifi protocol issue.
the wifi password definitely hasn't changed right. I feel stupid for asking but it is important
Not sure if anything would be there, but always good to check the journal:
journalctl -x -p 4
.
add -b to list only after last boot
They already posted journal
oh?
shits just being weird
got here on monday and it wouldnt connect, and im leaving tommorow but wanted to download a pretty big vm so needed the faster wifi
phone hotspot too slow
Try this:
- Make a file
/etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/wifi_rand_mac.conf - Put inside it:
[device]
wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no
- Save the file
- Do
systemctl restart NetworkManager
you can always try iwd instead of wpa_supplicant
did we ever get the specific error message
It's in the journal
ah ok
Basically this
yeah it just asks me to re enter the password over and over
Tried any of the 2 things above?
This
And this
Can also try iwd like Gozenka said. Can help troubleshooting
tried both
Do you have archiso USB with you?
ouch
Btw there's no need cause they can connect to other networks, it's just the one
I would suggest trying to connect with the archiso, since it has a different network setup readily available, so there would be no installing iwd or changing anything for troubleshooting
If it's prompting you for the password repeatedly, doesn't that mean you're entering it wrong? Not sure what you mean by that though
thats what I thought but its definatly the correct password, basically even collecting through cli it brings up a gui password entry screen
this is definitely outside the realm of simple problems I might be able to figure out so I'm gonna stop getting in the way and leave it to the experts. good luck. o7
o7
If you'd like to try it, replace wpa_supplicant with iwd
tbf its like 2am and im going back to uni tommorow so il survive
thanks for trying to help anyway
looks like shit just wont worky
When I had the same issue a few times in my life:
1- I was sure it's the right password, but it turned out to be wrong (:
2- IP conflict with other devices
3- Unsupported wifi protocol
Good night!
I had a similar problem:
Once your in your display server, type: nm-connection-editor
Remove the connection that randomly stopped connecting.
Add it again fresh bottom left
Once added go back to the terminal
Type: nmtui
Connect to it again ✅
I think they tried removing the connection and re-adding it
Like this: #1100929629247787119 message
Oh yeah that's the same thing but with a graphical interface, my bad.
I deleted the connection, rebooted, and added it again. Idk if rebooting would do anything, nevertheless it was same issue.
Question for you @frozen glen are you dual booting windows?
Oh so the network never worked on arch yet?
Your gf network is probably not WPA/WPA2/Enterprise
If it prompts for a new pw after trying to connect, I'm 99% sure you set the authentication wrong.
Were you able to connect to uni wifi?
They mentioned all wifi's worked, except for the gf's home wifi.
Yhhh it is wpa2, my one at home is wpa2 tho and works fine tho so
Idk
nm-connection-editor
what does it say
