#[SOLVED] How do i use archinstall? (got errors)
908 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
i havent used the installer but found this on google
https://github.com/archlinux/archinstall/issues/1593
have you tried older version (2.5.0)?
or, please give me some information about your system's block devices, etc. before using the installer
e.g, the result of $ lsblk -fpm
nvm.
i just deleted windows .
and now i only habe arch
wow
no its not gigachad
i need windows
ic
may i help you?
you can ping me whenever if you need
:(
need some chocolates lol
btw, do you know your windows product key?
also, let me know which windows version u wanna install
i.e., windows11
am back @tropic citrus
alr
i have an microsoft acc
windows 10
so wait
are u helping me installing windows again
yea
i don't care either way
but u already have arch, so lets install windows on same machine
either way, u can do dual boot
but huh
yea ik
i thought u need windows first to install dual boot
we need to wait 15 minutes now… My wifi is bad
nah
u can do two ways to build ur dual boot
- install arch then install windows
- install windows then install arch
either way, at the end, u have arch+windows, right?
ok
so you know how?
doesnt matter
u dont need UEFI to build dual boot
ye ik
u can enter bios, right?
tahts enough
cool
so what we do?
if im in windows usb
deah nvm
ill ask you if i booted in usb xd
the windows usb installer is officially distributed, so just use it and install it
arch linux will be deleted then
nah
u can choose where u install windows with custom option
lol its okay
u just need dd command
get windows 10 installer iso from here
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO
try which dd, am sure u already have it
5 minutes then its done
its fine
dd if=your_iso of=your_usb bs=block_size
thats
here, your_iso will be the .iso file
complicated
and your_usb will be something like /dev/sdb, u can check it using $ lsblk or $ fdisk -l
and, block_size will be checked using $ dmesg after you inserted your usb
gl
read kernel buffer failed
no eaig
u mean, u cant use use $ dmesg command?
use dmesg as root
ye already got that
ill show you some example, wait
alr
u can find some thing like this,
[22492.678658] sd 5:0:0:0: [sda] 121098240 512-byte logical blocks: (62.0 GB/57.7 GiB)
here, 121098240
even if u cant find that, then its okay
block_size is not something like must be needed option
u mean, u are now running dd command?
yes
nice
why it takes so long lol
so that u can take some chips or chocolates lol
you need a partition for windows
did u make it?
nope
ok
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/installation_guide#Partition_the_disks
u can make it using fdisk command
u can do it using fdisk command
first, unmount the disk which u wanna shrink, then shrink it using fdisk
that's case, u can unmount using arch usb
boot arch iso via usb, then ur disk is not mounted
:(
see, just like when you installed arch earlier xd
what command in fdisk is to shrink disk
fdisk is a dialog-driven program for the creation and manipulation of partition tables and understands GPT, MBR, Sun, SGI, and BSD partition tables. This article describes how to enlarge a partition with fdisk. Note that fdisk, while fdisk is easier to use, parted is more robust for ext4 file systems. However, resizing with parted is not availab...
oh mb that not
u can do that just using resize2fs command
https://access.redhat.com/articles/1196333
resize2fs /dev/device -10G will be reduce your /dev/device for 10GiB
i mean, not fdisk, but resize2fs
using resize2fs, u can reduce and extend ur /dev/sdX, like -10G, + 10G
yeah, ofc
if u install windows like the way
if u choose the hole disk when installing windows, then ur arch will be deleted
ok
ill will partition a free space in windows installer for arch
haha
dd didnt worked
that's easier way
u can boot the windws usb installer
ok
to install windows with rufus
nice
nice
just intall windows10 to your disk
this always takes so long
haha
to boot into it..
im already waiting 5 mins just to boot in the instaler
windows installer is so dumb
finally
yay
xd
lets make a partition for arch
already did
i habe
i have
100 gigs for arch now
and 100 giga for windows
and 1 tb for the storage
okay, nice
btw, is that 1tb for arch? or windows? or both?
in any case, that 1TB is not touched during the installation phase and can be configured any way you want later
now, let's install arch on that 100GB🔥
the installation guide is here, as you know
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/installation_guide#Partition_the_disks
it is important that when partitioning and formatting, you do not modify any areas other than the arch area
did u delete hole arch?
it seems to me that there are still remnants of your previous arch
yep
seems like it would probably be quicker to delete your entire disk and re-install windows again
..
Too few arguments for command addnote!
Usage: .addnote <name> <text>
how to do that
use something like that can delete hole disk with usb boot
like DBAN
or gparted
am sure at least gparted support GUI, so u can use it easily
lets use rufus to make usb bootable gparted and delete all (including special ones) partitions on your disk
:(
lol
or you can install gparted on windows and delete all the unintended partitions if you have any
so that you don't have to reinstall windows
oh
ik why there grun
grub
there was an 50mb partition

bro i just want windows and arch linux
and now system gone
wow
GG
thats becaise all user here said read documents on google
i had so many help channels
XD
why here is a support channel when google exists? - arch users
^
in fact, many people who use this channel post their own problems and solve them themselves before anyone responds
oh wait i havent noticed this part
bro i just want windows and arch linux
and now system gone
you can run the prompt from the windows install media and restore the MBR, etc., but
if you don't have any important data, i think it would be safer and easier to blow up the entire disk partition with gparted or something and start over from the windows installation
just enter default on the top
when a backup was indeed a backup xd
its just keymap setting, choose to fit ur keyboard
if you use us keyboard, just choose "dont touch" and it will be fine
wow
what todo
press enter and nothing?
after setting the language, were you asked for the startup mode?
also, did you download the proper version that was for your cpu?
i.e., amd64(64bits), i686(32bits)
https://gparted.org/download.php
are u using virtual machine?
bro
ur fr asking me this
without a system indtaled
on my pc
??
lets just use the arch install fdisk delte shit
okay okay, i googled some info about the error
some ppl with virtual machine stucked at same place
fdisk can delete tables roo
yea
its okay bro
it happens all the time
i mean, often happens when you dual boot
i think fdisk can handle it
when u create partition, u can choose what type
by specifying hex code or something
we dont need a type
partition
i mean we need to delete the whole disk
and create the disk lol

alr
say me what todo
im in arch
lol i was already confused
you're right
WAIT A SEC
wat
on my storage disk
is a boot
??
maybe just delete that
lol
and all will be good
ill just try
sorry i cant understand what the image means rn
but yea, lets go
oh, that /dev/sdb1, i see
ok
i think you didn't delete the disk completely when installing windows
yep
thats why i said use gparted and burn hole disk
but u cant use gparted for some reason, so,
- boot arch live iso
- show me
$ lsblk -f - use
$ fdisk /dev/sdX
ok!
lets go $ fdisk /dev/sda
next
d to delete
partition deleted
all?
next
done
no
q to quit
i think delete partition enough
we deleted partition before and it didnt worked
no lets make „i think“ to „im sure“
i dont want to run to other room download iso into stick
just to notice it doesnt work
did we delete partition and not worked?
yes
we need to delete disk
and then create the new disk label
when
before installing windows?
okay nice
so, next, installing windows10, right?
choose "custom option" when installing
and confirm that u r installing windows10 on your 256GB disk
nope not right
make a new partition
with site
115g
then download windows
so we habe extra space for arch
oh, create arch partition now?
ok
ye in windows installation
then, fdisk /dev/sda
no u can
create partitions in windows too
and its too late iso is already copying in usb
so, u will install ur windows10 to 256GB disk and, after that, create arch partition in windos, right?
no
im confused
i will create a partition for windows with 100 G
so we have a free space wirh 100gigs
after i installed windows
we will install arch
on that free space 100 gigs
👍
okay
then fdisk /dev/sda and press o to create partition
bro
and windows iso already on stick
and to create a partition its n lol
finaly i understood
so, u choose "custom option" for installing windows10 and install only in 100GB when installing, right?
yeees
okay
sorry
sorry
im bad when i try to explain
lessgooooooo
i mean, lets go
smoking time
haram
coffee time
oh i didnt know that sorry
oh i see
my mom dont let me
yep, my mom also said coffee is for adult and i cant drink
i thought u were like 25
haha
i use the term "coffee time" to make it seem hard-boiled and grown-up
if im 25 or something, ill say "weeds time 420
"
yay
may the force be with us
haha, thanks
u will be fine this time
so uhm
@sand blaze
if i boot into the right disk
theres a think
thing*
that blinks
in the second row
not the first
the second
uhm
OMG WAIT
IT WORKED
THE FIRST WINDOWS START WILL TAKE A FEW MINUTES
omggg
worked?
u mean, situation is good? or bad?
were you able to install windows into a 100GB area?
idk really know rn
i mean
its blinking
but it didnf say its not a boot device
do you mean, u r installing? or did u already installed?
its already installed
im trying to boot it rn
btw are u using only arch or are you dual booting
did you choose "custom option" for installing and made just 100GB area for instalation?
btw are u using only arch or are you dual booting
dual boot with 2 SSD, 1 is for arch, and the other is for windows
this usually happens when ur broke ur boot sector or somthing
seems not good
lol
u should choose that option in the first
why
it way easier and safe
unfortnatly that windows (boot sector) must be broken, from the image of blinking cursor
if i were you, i would do this,
do what
- connect only the other SSD in the pc and install windows
- install gparted (or something similar) to the windows installed in step 1., and burn up the SSD you have been using
- connect only the SSD cleaned in step 2. to the pc and install arch
yes, so, 1. connect only the other SSD in the pc and install windows
and, 2. install gparted (or something similar) to the windows installed in step 1., and burn up the SSD you have been using
haha
maybe you need to rest well today
and can come back when your brain is clearer again
aha i see
my point is that if you connect the two disks on your pc one at a time, and have separate bootable windows and linux, you can avoid weird problems
if you have two disks
forget it
clean insall windows to your another disk
and then clean the other, i mean you have used till now, disk
using windows
i actually dont want to boot from different disks
why
ofc you should if you want to do
if you have another laptop or something running windows on it, it would be easy to try formatting using that laptop
i know that, but...
- repair the broken boot sector somehow
- clean up that ssd once and do a clean install
- is way easier
but on your system, for some reason, gparted live image not worked
so
:(
idk what todo
i really dont know
i reinstalled windows
maybe it works now
TLDR
Use ventoy to make the USB and place windoz and arch isos on it
Install windoz first but leave some free space fur arch
Install arch
???
Become gigachad
Ofc you may like to use manual Installation
I have dual SSD, and i have a small partition with windoz as compatibility layer. Yet the main system is full Arch.
lol
But I have few use or need fur windoz
First.. do what I said
TLDR
Use ventoy to make the USB and place windoz and arch isos on itInstall windoz first but leave some free space fur arch
Install arch
???
Become gigachad
@sage nest
thats littalry what im doing
without ventoy.
yea
Also disable secure boot and be sure to be booting on UEFI only mode
i dont have uefi
.aw dual boot
Are you sure?
@sand blaze see like i said they gimme only docs . thats how i deleted my system
How old is your PC?
100%
maybe 14 years +
haha
Send all your bios settings
Some UEFI have legacy support so it looks like it boots like older systems but it doesn't
Show me the rest
youve already done Windows standalone, arch standalone boot, so there should be no problem with bios
i only habe windows
oh
but that mean bios doesn't related with current situation
i mean, windows doesnt boot with blinking cursor
and i said
On boot, go to security
plus you want to install more archs on the same ssd
then you should probably just reinstate the ssd, rather than trying to fix the current non-bootable Windows system, which probably has a boot sector problem
for now i only want windows
lol
bro
nah just nvm
bro im sitting here
5 hours +
to do nothing
except waiting for some guy that sended god to me and idk
so, u wanna repair the cursor blinking windows without re-installing windows?
then how about re-installing using the previous usb installer?
with no "custom option"
Seems to be legacy. Show me your boot order
there is no „custom option“
BRO I SAID
just wasted 12 MB of phone space for these photos
lol
I make the questions here!!1!`
I'm trying to help
bro, tell me that earlier💀
Yup. It's definitely legacy
Now you need to install both systems in legacy mode
why both
How you made your USB?
Use ventoy
You want to dual boot, right? Then use ventoy for this project
did you select MBR for partition scheme in rufus?
si
yes means
si = yes
spanish
We don't talk Spanish here
cool guide
Anyways, ventoy will do the job
And ventoy will auto set itself to MBR so
You don't need to do anything but tell it where's the USB to install
Then copy the ISOs to it and reboot to usb
thats for arch i dont habe arch or something
There's ventoy and etchdroid fur Android too
Nope. Ventoy is cross platform
just to put the issue in perspective.
booting from a USB stick is not a problem
its the Windows installation that's causing the problem
just in case you're wondering
perhaps my dad is gay and i love the love
sorry im getting weird rn
this right
i dont think so
installer itself worked
i think boot sector of the disk(not usb) corrupted
Yup. Then copy windoz and Arch isos to the new ventoy usb
Because you're supposed to copy ISOs to it
Ventoy only makes your USB bootable. It doesn't flash anything by itself. You are the one to choose what to boot by placing ISOs on the USB

Also get arch iso

You csn dual boot now. Instead of just having windoz, complete the dual boot
As per OG question
bro your a guy that says me „read docs“ or sending me links
thats how i messed up this shit
🗿
btw, i havent use ventoy, it seems useful
it is
Not my fault you messed it. Skill issue
u can boot multiple things
And ik what I'm doing
ye if were on dual boot shit u will send me again docs
and ill delete the system again
I'm walking you through this, yet you complain
After you get both windoz and arch isos, reboot to the USB
We will use cmd to clean the mess
i actually have adhs idk what its called on english but ye
Btw, get gparted ISO
Just as failsafe
As for the arch Installation you will use cfdisk
.aw cfdisk
Cfdisk is ez to use
And to install Arch, use the official guide
.aw Installation guide
ur gicing me liiiinks
Archinstall likes to break itself on dual boot
I can't write the guide here so
You said you wanted arch? Then install Arch as per wiki says
There are no other ways
And archinstall script already failed so
Unless you want to use EndeavourOS, which is arch based
... EndeavourOS
#10529 📣 https://endeavoros.com
Skill issue
I've already installed aech on legacy and works fine
ye me too
on my laptop
Skill issue all over the place
Not arch fault but user fault
Idk.. blame your ISP
How much you know about Linux?
mhh
So you may want to use EndeavourOS instead til you can get arch
But if you still want arch, use the official guide

:(
bro ig i need to die
i have ao many skill issues
maybe i have a skill issue even to die

Yet you want arch. I told you to use official guide
tried 5 times, failed 5 times, skill issued myself 5 times
Archinstall just breaks on your system configuration
Then go with EndeavourOS
As it has a GUI Installer
❌
Then idk. Cope with no OS
🗿
sending links

Just don't be a help vampire
bro if ur saying me „just follow the guide“ i can close this channel.. Im not asking for help without a reason
Wdym
I sent the related info and official guide and you refuse to follow it. Nothing we can do about
I even gave you the option to use EndeavourOS as alternative. Yet you refuse again
Well. I can't do anything if the user rejects help
well, let me get the issue straight
@tropic citrus got stuck trying to install arch and windows over and over on same SSD
and they only trying to install windows that works now
that's the only problem
that's why i suggested that they clean up the SSD and do a clean install
now, it shouldn't matter what other distribution or how familiar they are with linux i think
For that, they need windoz ISO then I can tell em how to clean the mess
guide wont help me.
Yet no news about
nice
imma go to bed
cuz bed time
gl guys
Ik how to clean a drive that's borked
Wdym
Official guide tells how to install Arch. There are no other official methods
Or you follow guide, or use archinstall.
Then you have EndeavourOS as noob proof way of getting an arch based system with a GUI Installer
There are no other ways
if i have endevaour
If you don't want to read then we can't do anything about
ill never learn arch lol
how many times do i need to say it
ig dont help me.
Yet you csn ask how to do x this on official arch install guide
Then use EndeavourOS
„just do what the guide says“
EndeavourOS hss a gui Installation
Wdym. EndeavourOS is 90% arch
Idk what do you want then. You say you want to learn arch, yet refuse to read official guides and documentation
Also refuse to use cfdisk

ur always sayin „ u need to read“
thats not a help
thats like
Me: „ teacher i dont understand this“
You: „just read it, isnt that hard if u follow that“
why there are even schools
if google exists
why heres a help channel
if google exists
Then how you pretend to learn arch if you refuse to read the wiki?
Learning arch requires reading the wiki and thinkering by yourself. Arch is a DIY distro, not meant to be user friendly.
Then you can ask here
We assume you can read the wiki to have some comprehension of the issue, then ask what part of it you dont understand
like i said
partitioning
„use cfdisk , then all will be good“
„use endeva whatever then“
You need to do everything on official arch Installation guide til partitioning. What part of it you don't get?
On cfdisk, you need to mark the free space then begin partitioning
You also need to use lsblk to know which partitions are you going to use
Offered EndeavourOS as alternative since you refused to use cfdisk
Btw did you got windoz iso?
Now boot into the USB
Then select the windoz iso and choose normal boot
It should load windoz Installer
Select your Language and click install windoz
Then open a CMD by pressing Ctrl+F10
Run the following commands
diskpart
list disk
select disk <number of the disk that was listed previously and irs the target drive>
clean
convert mbr
exit```
Then close CMD window and proceed with normal Installation but when partitioning, don't give it all the space. Idk how big is your drive, but give it half of your drive space to windoz, so you can install Arch after
After that, let windoz do its thing
mhh
Once it reaches the desktop, you can install drivers fur windoz or just reboot and Install arch
Waiting for user to resume arch side of the guide
Is there a reason for them using MBR?
@sage nest
so first of all
i want to thank you
it worked
second sorry foor being toxic but ye
Yes. Their system is legacy only, aka old system
So windoz works?
Now proceed to dual boot
Remember to give it half your drive space
For windoz
need to wait first
That will be enough
So lemme know when you're ready to do arch part of the guide
Or you can use EndeavourOS for a quick and express dual boot
is endeavouros fun?
haha, thats very good
It literally says, install alongside
the fun of struggling with installation
vs.
the convenience of having everything done automatically
lol
ill put it in my junk laptop next time and give it a try
nope
and its still loading
„getting ready“
@sage nest uhm
i have a blackscreen now
with nothing
ah nvm
its restarting
i saw back in chat that you broke boot sector, has this all been fixed or what?
i will paste a thing i gave to someone else if it doesnt work
or you havent gotten it fixed
What i did was anyways wipe everything install arch, then get os-prober, Partition, then install windows then spam your boot menu key, DON'T LET WINDOWS BOOT. go to your grub then go onto arch, then # sudo os-prober in your terminal, password, then you should see a "Windows Boot Manager" in your efi partition at "nvme0n1p1" or where ever the efi was set. then do # sudo nano /etc/grub/default then at bottom of uncomment (remove the octothrope) the GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=true and if its on "=true" make is oppisite.
Then run # sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
You should see an output of "Added windows boot manager or somewhere on the lines of that.
@sage nest u here?
yeah already got fixed
#11251 📣 if you don't need help with this anymore, add [SOLVED] to the start of the post's title (for example, the title could say [SOLVED] pacman not working)
if you're on a laptop or desktop computer, see the note on archiving by sending a message that says ... archive.
noo not close
not all fixed
only booting into windows
now i keed dusl boot arch
and i failed much so i need a „in person“ help
ok, so what's not working right now?
are you still getting the same error from the start?
no im in windows
but i want arch. now
and i messed this installation up
like 5 times
thats why i needee to reinstall windows too
im asking for help so andone can tell me what todo exactly bcs i dont want to mess it up again
@devout badger
You could just go for a manual install
Sorry had to go out
You can do the official Installation guide, or use EndeavourOS for a GUI express Installation
... EndeavourOS
#10199 📣 https://endeavouros.com
yeah probably do endevour at this point, its failing really bad for you.
Note archinstall was not found.
shsuh
So you ended using EndeavourOS?
yes
So now everything works?
uh i wanted arch linux but
they saying use guide, i tried guide and that is what happened
i used archinstall;
used manual install 4 times
and y ep all messed up
so its kinda solved rn
Then you're good. Enjoy your system.
EndeavourOS is not arch :(
lol
but ty
But it's 90% arch. It uses arch repos
but its not arcvh :(
Well.. you can try arch later but use the official guide
.aw Installation guide
If EndeavourOS works for you, why not just stick with it?
Like they said, it isn't too different from Arch, and you shouldn't use something just because it's "cool"
