I want icons which are just shortcuts for different applications. I recently switched from xfwm4 to i3 and I was wondering if I could keep all of the previous icons I had on my desktop before
yes
I3wm doesn't have icons on desktop, its a tiling window manager after all.
There are a few ways to have desktop icons if you want, usually by using a different app launcher

Hello everyone, there's one feature I really miss in i3: The big desktop-environments give you the possibility to let the filemanager display the content of your XDGDESKTOPDIR on the desktop. Of course while using a tiling window manager you can't see your desktop most of the time anyway, but it would be great for me to see the outstanding work ...
Just want to let you know, its no very common for tiling window managers to use desktop icons, as you won't see them.
If you just wanna be able to click on something to launch something, you could go with a dock or other app-launcher.
That is exactly what I meant, thank you!
I know I won't be seeing the desktop most of the time anyway, but it is sometimes convenient when the other monitor is not used
