#Setting up Arch Linux (Wayland & Sway)

That's why
21h2 exists
Ffs
If 21H1 is choppy
And 22h2 will be there soon
How tf 21H2 can be a silver lining?
๐
You mean 22h1
21h1 is EOL
Nah the 21H1 October update
So is 1903
But atleast it wasn't choppy
Don't use that one. It's the most buggy version of windoz 10
Also i wasn't updating it
So it was just finr
21h2 was known for deleting stuff
Idk what happened but it shows this now and won't exit to tty
And iirc 1903 also had several bugs
Yeah i read it but it was working fine
run alacritty in it
That's just dmenu
It's like an app launcher that's actually quite simple to use
Now back on topic, I guess you have a modern UEFI install now with sway?
Yeah probably
Idk. I've been away, you tell me
It's really nice to be talking to yall at 5 AM again
Lol it's 3pm here
timezones
@daring coyote have you got foot installed now?
Lol can't confirm modern but yeah it's uefi
they already have alacritty
I installed it before launching sway
Good. Now move on with derp assistance
they're going to end up with two of every program lol
Wait you're running it as root?
Yeah probably a good idea to change the thread name to "need help setting up a sway install"
Leaving. Hope you have everything working
This is more devastating than i thought it'd be...
These texts and the acc name and the pfp
What
I'm aggravated and lmfaooooo I'm rolling on the floor laughing
Pls rename the thread
Can you install sway for me?
He just means that he can't help you from this point on, and you'll need other people to help you
Nah
It's like Lumiere's texts just pop
And ik like tf and then I'm laughing my ass off
And no. We can't install sway for you. You have to DIY. We can just guide you.
Need help with Sway installation
Idk what are you talking about. And I have nothing else to do here from this point. I did my job.
I will break into your house and install sway
Nah I'm not blaming or berating you
You're funny
Idk if you're serious everytime
But your texts make me laugh so hard
Okay now in alacritty
What should I do
And Mr. Derp lmfaooooo
Pls save me from installing two of everything
Are you root or your user?
Root
If you don't have a user you'll need to create one
I have one
Try logging out using the terminal and logging back in as your user
That's not logging in tho
Is that alright?
Exit out of sway, logout of root, and then login to your user
do win + shift + e
Yep
now before running sway, go into the .config folder, make a sway folder and run cp /etc/sway.conf sway/config
Good call
I will have to create sway folder right?
yes
cd ~/.config
create it then as well
It's probably there, just not listed in ls
Gimme 5 mins imma be back
Tried ls -a as well
Nothing showed up
Run mkdir -p .config/sway to create both of them
Gimme 5 mins ill be back
This will be in home directory right?
In home?
yes
Will it create .config and sway inside home??
/home/[user], yeah
Umm
It says cp: cannot stat '/etc/sway.conf': No such file or directory
cd .config first
Done
Yeah
Alright
sorry it's /etc/sway/config
Yeah
Should be
You can probably try to reboot now, and this time, don't sign in as root
You can but you don't really have to
I think it's the one that i was supposed to create inside .config
Yeah but it won't really do any harm to keep it
Equally, you can delete it, but you might want to wait until you have a file manager to do that
So the tty login
That I've booted straight up into
I should log in with my personal ACC right?
Yep
Yeah
Now what should I do
Then you should be good to go, you can install software with the terminal etc
Leave it open in case you need more help
You currently have both wofi and dmenu installed, which do roughly the same thing
so you may want to get rid of one
Which one should I get rid of?
12 minutes into it and i idk like changed smthing i think
what
Did you figure out which to remove?
I'd recommend pavucontrol for pulseaudio
But I hear that pipewire is better overall
@potent vortex i was trying to install wine
However
It keeps running into errors everytime i makepkg -si it (lib32 packages not found)
Like the lib 32 keeps going on and on
Have you tried just using pacman?
And these are the AUR ones
Oh then have you tried using yay?
No
Have you installed yay?
Can you help me with installing wine using yay?
Supposedly no
I'd recommend it as an AUR helper
git clone aur.archlinux.org/packages/yay.git I think
One sec
git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/yay.git
That one
Then you makepkg -sir that
Then you can just use yay as an alternative way to use pacman and a way to download AUR programs
It keeps saying you do not write permissions
What directory are you in?
Oh oh wait no
Opt
Ah
Hang on lemme find a guide
Actually, just do this in /home/user
You can always delete the folder later
Ah that makes sense
I've created Programs folder in home directory
Basically for AUR packages
So i clone repositories into it
Oh fair enough
you shouldn't need to use it once you've got yay
Yeah you don't need to keep those files really
At least with yay, because it can do updates for AUR packages
That's cool
Most of them tuts are about yaourt
Aurman too
Didn't look it but I will
Ah yeah, yay is a follow up to yaourt
"Yet Another Yoghurt" -> "yay"
(ig Yoghurt was probably a nickname for yaourt)
Creative indeed
yeah it's cool to have pacman and the AUR in the same command
Yeah
Btw yay just got installed
No need for sudo, it'll do that itself
That's a relief
So which wine pkg do you need?
Yeah which one were you trying to install?
I think it was wine stable
Also I'm on Wayland
So i think the PKG is different for Wayland?
Yep it may take a little while to compile
PS just changed the thread name, so it's easy to follow up...
Yeah good call
Just press enter
It'll select None by default
It's just to tell you much more specific details of what's happening
Yep that'll be it
Yeah the rest should be good to just say yes to
No caps but i feel like installing arch was an overkill
Yeah it might've been, it's your first Linux yeah?
Ah fair
Like this is what I feel like i should have known before diving into this
Maybe yeah
Hardwares and necessary drivers
I'm aware of that stuff but damn it feels overwhelming
That's valid
How should I start over?
Do you want to start over?
You mean like Linux From Scratch? The guided tutorial? Or do you mean just starting Arch from scratch again?
Linux from scratch
Oh dear, I've no experience with that
Yeah more like a roadmap
I'm aware of basic commands
But yk
Like idk if it's bottom up or top down
The poking behaviour
Like if we're learning C language
And you mention header file like stdio.h
I gotta know what's header file and what's inside stdio.h
Yeah can't help you there
Lmaooo
If i may ask
How did you learn linux?
P.s. just asking no harm intended
Eh i started with Manjaro for about a week, and then some years later, I came back and switched to Mint, then 8 months after daily driving that,I went to arch
I think windows kind of makes you inert to explore and dive into depths of how system works and i find myself as a victim of that
Coz after installing arch i was like what's next?
And I'm like drawing blanks rn
Odd
Wine is in the official repos
