#how do i give write and edit access to my NTFS mounted windows drive? [solved]
233 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
what did I get wrong?
so i can make the directoryies inside my ntfs via using sudo
but im not sure if that transfers ownership to sudo only of everything
i use dolphin to move and use shit
so if i want to edit stuff inside this path
mnt / 4tb / Movies
for example
i just do sudo chown -R $USER /mnt/4tb/Movies
ohh right
so i shouldnt have to use sudo to make folders normally right
and t his wont fuck it up in windows
when i log back into windows
and use the drive
it wont be like "owned by linux user" or some shit?
great ill try it now
mine auto mounts in fstab
is that what u mean?
no
its just its own ntfs3 drive that gets mounted
fuck, i cant delete the folder coz i made it with sudo b4
[peter@archlinux Movies and Drama]$ sudo -Rm Movies/
sudo: you are not permitted to use the -R option with Movies/
oh okay.
illdo that now
but whats this thing about mounting it to home?
isnt mounting it in /mnt correct / enoujgh?
damn
[peter@archlinux Movies and Drama]$ sudo chown -R $USER /mnt/16tb/Japanese/Movies and Drama/
chown: cannot access '/mnt/16tb/Japanese/Movies': No such file or directory
├─sdb1 8:17 0 16M 0 part
└─sdb2 8:18 0 14.6T 0 part /mnt/16tb
```
yeah its there
oh , did i need those ' tags
ah
i thought the space maybe
could ahve caused the issue
thanks i didnt know that ' solved space issues
ok i chwon it now i think
but i cant remove it still
the folder i made with sudo mkdir
wait, i cant even create new
with dolphin
wtf
yeah
i ran
sudo chown -R $USER '/mnt/16tb/Japanese/Movies and Drama/'
Movies and Drama]$ mkdir '/mnt/16tb/Japanese/Movies and Drama/test'
mkdir: cannot create directory ‘/mnt/16tb/Japanese/Movies and Drama/test’: Permission denied
fek
yea
no erroras nothing
i only ran it on small movie directory
[peter@archlinux Movies and Drama]$ sudo chown -R $USER '/mnt/16tb/Japanese/Movies and Drama/'
[peter@archlinux Movies and Drama]$
uhh
ive only ever used my mnt folder
16 tb drive /dev/sdb2
UUID=DE5E656B5E653D81 /mnt/16tb ntfs3 defaults 0 0
ill make it now
can i make it as regular user in dolphin
rebooting
dude me too
brb lol
ok so im in now
wat shuld i do
also
would this mean all of my mountpoints for steam library etc i had in 16tb
need to be reconfigged
as well as my .desktop entries?
this time it asked for sudo passord whiciih is good
let me see
nah
i still cant create folders
with right click in dolphin
lol
permisison denied
still
fkn RIp
also my drive is making some FUKEd up sounds xd
yeah
-rwxr-xr-x 1 peter root 1161324399 May 31 2022
file name comes after that
ive brought it back
drive is moer quieter now
but yea
lemme check who owns it again now
exact same thing
could it be dolphin needs to eb run as sudo?
if i run dolphin as sudo, im pretty usre i can do everything.
ok
do i need to sudo it
dont run what at root
>
i tried running it from a terminal inside my drive one folder back from movies and drama
it just has that weird arow rn
yea i canceld it okay
why i need glasses
fuk
it made a "noise" on my drive when i ran it so to speak
yea i dindt just now, woops
if i didnt, whats the worst that can happen
it just wouldnt work i gues?
or
yep
i can delete
and move shit now
in dolphion
wtf
so it was the 7
the 777
thta fixed it
not the regular one
wtf why
ye
so u gotta do that for NTFS drives usually?
wait
i still cant "create new" folder
in dolphin
but i can delete files and folders that are already in there
i think i was abler to read b4 as i could watch video files
yea
i can delete shit
move it
but i cant makea new folder
o.0
i can make it with terminal
without sudo
but cant within dolphin
HAHA
but it lets me right click
and delete
within dolpinh
so it registers some change not others maybe
idk xd
i just copy patsed inside dolphin no issue
soooo weird
okay thanks for ur help
so i just gotta use 777
if i run into this
and what doe sregular CHMOD USER used for
normally?
so i cant do like
chmond 777 /mnt/ somethjing
or /home/peter/
oh okay
right
i kinda get it but i dont
so what mode is USER
as opposed to mode 777
oh 777 adds more
idk man xd
ohh i think i got it now
😄
thanks 4 ur help
ill remember if i get stuck on another file to use this again, lol 😄
right
could i just write peter instead of USER
okay
okay great thanks
how do i give write and edit access to my NTFS mounted windows drive? [solved]
my fault
Isn't the problem because of windows hibernate
You don't gotta do none of this shit I'm pretty sure
Without ntfs-3g it wont work. But its this too.
Just shutdown your windows by pressing shutdown holding shift
Or just disable in registry or power options
Disable what?
Windows "fast boot"
I need it, otherwise it wont work. 6.0 kernel
Aka cheating
You do not I can assure you
Disabled, still happens
I can mount my windows drive fine using ntfs3 and not ntfs-3g
Then you got something else going on
Ill check later
If you formated the drive via linux ntfs it will work.
But to use windows made one you need 3g
Nope works fine on my windows drive too
Ill check later i guess
Kk
Is this native to kernel? No packages needed?
Yea
If so, it didnt work for me.
it won't mount just like that you need to add a rule which allows it to mount NTFS drives without specifying
Gnome disk utility actually mounts it automatically
And it did. Just failed to write iirc
Anyway, i see this having issues with udisks so im better off ntfs 3g anyway
Since it works
Do you use ACL on every drive?
What's ACL
I guess not
Windows like access control iirc.
I needed it for my SMB server
On one drive
The rest work ootb
Yeah I don't need that
And if i dont shutdown my windows properly it will not be able to write on any drive
My bet - cache writing enabled in windows for all drivers
wait what?
chmod 777 fixed it forme
windows isnt booted, only linux
?
its a problem when windows doesnt shut down properly
i dont know the science behind it, but its a fact.
if you want to be 100% sure, hold shift while you press shutdown in menu. then you can boot linux and it shouldnt have a problem.
if you are desperate for it to work 100% of the time go to device manager select disk propeties and propably it has to do with these settings:
those are default ones btw*
sounds wack as fuck
so if i hold shift and shutdown windows
thenboot linux
it should proper turn the drives offf windows like weird interferecne thing
yes, it kinda makes sense tho, i think?
