Popping sound when headphones plugged in and no audio playing

I just reinstalled arch, and I am getting an issue where I hear a popping/clicking sound every second or so. It goes away when I play a sound (anything: system sound, video, audio, a silent video). This happened on my first install, but at one point it just stopped for no apparent reason. Now with the reinstall, it is back.
I have looked at and tried the first page of google results, no dice
