When requesting support, please include specific, detailed, and relevant information about your system and issue.
We need such information because we don't know what it's like inside your system, and it's unlikely that we know much about the issue you're facing. The more information you can provide, the better we can help you with your specific issue.
Some examples of frequently requested information include the steps you took before your issue occurred (such as system updates), the steps you took to resolve your issue and their results, and your environment (such as your display manager or desktop environment).
Vague or superficial questions lead to vague or superficial answers. False information leads to false solutions.
can you not install networkmanager because you don't have internet?
Temporary failure in name resolution
So you're not connected to internet
you still need network software
well , how?
Boot on arch USB live and pacstrap
i didn't use arch linux before
so i need details
I'm in the terminal right now logged on my user.
mhh,
- Boot on USB install
- mount your partitions
- connect to internet
- pacstrap /mnt networkmanager networkmanager-applet
something like this
how do i do all of those
with the docs
uhh
you need to tell me how to do everything , i don't know anything about arch linux
i just gave it a try on my bucket of a laptop
I don't really have time
just read the "installation guide" everything is explained
or use a distro as debian to begin with Gnu linux
the installation guide explains nothing
it tells me to write /etc/hostname and when i do it says command not found
nano is not found ?
no it literally says command not found
that guide tells me 1 command that doesnt even work
it doesnt even have a step by step guide or something
You're trying the command from usb live or from the arch chroot ?
it never asked me that
i have a user set up and the host of the pc
from the installer
and i tried to do sudo /etc/hostname and it says it doesnt find my command
??
i told you that etc hostname isnt working
i don't know how to complete that configuration
what guide is this it doesnt explain anything
it doesn't mean anything, it's a file, it can't not work
read this
and reinstall properly
@cyan harbor we can continue here
it basically says it didnt find the packet
but i installed
it
if u know any fixes type them on here
@rancid lily you don't need network manager if you're using iwctl
You only need one more program and it's dhcpcd
you don't need dhcpcd if you're using iwd
then what do i do
it seems dhcpcd doesnt download
or install when i put the commmand
You do because iwd's built in DHCP client is broken rn
Why are you overcomplicating this
?
Just boot the live usb, mount your root drive, chroot into it, then do pacman -S dhcpcd and that's it
i did what you told me in #tech-general
You don't need network manager at all
Wasn't talking to you
You would've done it all during the installation
is there a way i can redo the installation?
You shouldn't
well then shit
just boot the live usb
Then mount your root drive
Do you know how to do that
nope
You aren't screwed in any way
How did you even install arch then
That's like the second step
or wait did you use archinstall?
yes i did
Ah okay
Forgot that existed sorry, I'll walk you through it
So
Boot the live usb like you did before
What
i will , hold on
Depends on your motherboard manufacturer though
There's no standard unfortunately
if u can type all the steps it would be great cuz i don't think i'll be able to follow what you say right now , i need to leave in a couple of minutes , will you be available in , let's say 3 hours?
Maybe idk
I'm going out for lunch in like 2 hours
But probably later
Other people here can help too
I'll write it down rn though
boot live usb
run lsblk
It'll show you all the partitions, look for the ext4 one, there may be 2 depending on what you chose in archinstall, by default it'll have a 20gb root partition so look for that if you don't remember setting the size
when you find it, run mount /dev/NAME /mnt
NAME being what lsblk says the nake is
after that, run ls /mnt to make sure it's the root partition, it'll have /bin, /usr, /opt, etc if it's the root, otherwise it'll have like Downloads or Desktop
If it's not the root partition, unmount it with umount /mnt (not unmount) and mount the correct one
After that, run arch-chroot /mnt
then pacman -S dhcpcd
Then it'll install dhcpcd
Then just exit the chroot environment with ctrl+d or exit
Then reboot
Then go to your actual system and run dhcpcd and it'll work, give it a second to work though
Just press Ctrl+c after a bit since by default it'll run forever
i mounted that drive and it says command not found at the arch-chroot
wait , first how do i boot live usb?
if i boot the usb it asks me to go thru the installer
@cyan harbor
idk i did everything
when i pacman it says invalid url
for server
@cyan harbor yo man , if i boot live usb it puts me thru the choices of what to install
Now what do i do? Ah this fucking os
Imma talk to myself since nobody will ever see this post
just choose the first one
oh finally someone saw this
okay , hang on
imma follow Jodi's instruction until i fail
Ah sorry I was busy
No problem!
I'm not entitled to your time
I'm just trying things
I will follow the things you said until something goes wronf
wrong
Ok i set my 20 gigs partition as /mnt , i ran ls /mnt and tmp is highlighted as green
So i suppose this isn't the one with the root right?
Okay , so everything went fine until i ran /pacman -S dhcpcd
why wouldn't it be
idk ,it has tmp highlighted green , im a total beginner to arch
When i ran pacman -S dhcpcd it says invalid url for server
Ran pacman -S dhcpcd and got error. Help!
can you exit chroot & run iwctl
that's probably fine
iwctl says my network config is disabled
does it let you continue
yep
ok then try station wlan0 connect [wifi name]
done
go back to chroot & retry
pacstrap is only for you to run once
it resets a couple of things when you do it again
the next time, you should use pacman --root
should i send a pic?
something different happened
this time it didnt give me an error
i think it's ok?
i ran pacman -S dhcpcd again
yeah
okie , then what's next?
that pacstrap thingy?
no
okay
rebooted
now let's see
okay , so it rebooted me to the os
should i see if i can access the internet?
From what i understood i needed dhcpcd to install NetworkManager
How should i do that?
Succesfully installed dhcpcd. How do i connect to the internet now?
Should i open a terminal?
yeah
inside lqxt?
ok
Network Configuration is enabled from what i see
hang on imma try and connect
ok
did it connect though
i think so
umm
i pinged google
try using internet now
it works
ok then um
yeah it automatically connects to wifi now
so like
you know
you don't need networkmanager
shall i reboot and see?
there's no need
you can just
use internet
and if you reboot it'll work
So i don't need that retarded network manager?
right
Thank god
Imma keep the post open in case anything happens. Thanks!
you can just make another
You have no idea how many days i tried to make this work.
Too few arguments for command addnote!
Usage: .addnote <name> <text>
#9639 ๐ฃ If your issue is solved, please prepend [SOLVED] to the beginning of this thread's title. Then, if possible, archive the thread.
damn that must suck
this is probably your last time having to go through something like this
Hmm , it still doesn't work
wdym
I opened my OS now and clicked the Network icon and it says feature unimplemented
um
can you just use iwctl station wlan0 connect [network name] any time you need to connect to a different network
i'll try
Nope!
doesn't work
Clicking Network or Computer icons on LQXT says Feature Unimplemented.
hi Sebi, we don't use the word 'retarded' to mean foolish in this server because of its abelist connotations as a derogatory slur against people who are not neurotypical, please don't use it like that ๐
Okay
what?
i'm asking if you're okay with using iwctl to connect to networks
instead of that wifi icon
It will be a bit annoying but if there is no other way then sure
if it really bothers you
pacman -S networkmanager systemctl enable --now NetworkManager pacman -Rns dhcpcd systemctl disable iwd
do i paste these into a terminal?
that would make it work again
yeah
sure
i dont wanna do this anymore then
lmao
rebooting would probably fix it
i did
it asked me what i want to do with network
i said execute and it still didnt work
idfk
It's a torture
are you doing wifi or are you doing wired?
Wifi
wpa_supplicant installed?
what is that?
how do i install this?
can you post screenshots of your trying to get your adapter to work, what commands you're using etc.
Um , i don't do those , i mean i have nothing to send screenshots of
It seems that wpa is installed
my internet works and the only problem is that damn icons
oh so you can connect to wifi just fine, you just can't use a gui of some sort?
yup
those computer and network icons from lqxt dont work
says feature unimplemented
have you installed nm-tray from the aur?
the aur is the arch user repository, it's not as secure as the main repos
do i run pacman for both
how do i install that crap?
sudo pacman -S --needed base-devel
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nm-tray-git is the package you want.
manual should be something like:
cd ~/Documents
git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/nm-tray-git.git
cd nm-tray-git
makepkg -si
Or you can make an aur helper and use that for installing aur packages, but be aware, you should 1) know how to install things from the aur yourself, and 2) be aware of malicious programs, they of course are not generally going to just be labelled as such.
https://ostechnix.com/how-to-install-paru-aur-helper-in-arch-linux/ -this is install guide on installing paru, an aur helper.
@lofty knoll anything to add / any contradictions?
uh
how do i run those cd ~/Documents thingies
idk how to make that aur helper or things
how to i run that manual command
I don't know what you're asking?
so i ran your first sudo command
they're CLI commands if that's what you mean
yeah what do i do with those
that looks right to me
git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/nm-tray-git.git is a cli command
what does it show you
Downloads Desktop etc.
does it show you nm-tray-git?
No
hm...
the only package i have is dhcpcd
and then if you did it right you should see it in ls
I honestly don't know what you mean, show me a picture?
pretty sure sebi is having trouble with the cd Documents part
wait you're in as root?
yes
lol
can you log in as a user?
pretty sure you don't need to do sudo
should be installed already
invalid adress
wdym
I told them to install base-devel which should include git
i ran pacman -S git
doesn't work
invalid address
i'm again fucking disconnected
from the internet
hang on
but wait
base devel worked
i think it just used the cache
implying that you already have base-devel
and now iwctl doesn't want to start
i love this os so much
from one problem to another 10 problems
weird, maybe it used to and they removed it?
`systemctl start iwd
echo EnableNetworkConfiguration=true | sudo tee -a/etc/iwd/main.conf
echo [General] | sudo tee -a /etc/iwd/main.conf
sudo pacman -S git
git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/nm-tray-git.git
cd nm-tray
makepkg -irs`
should work, i don't wanna explain why
never has been
you got mandela effected
tee invalid option
weird...maybe I'm thinking of another group, or I'm just 100% convinced of something that is totally and utterly untrue
show us photos please
you didn't do the whole command
type echo EnableNetworkConfiguration=true | sudo tee -a/etc/iwd/main.conf then press enter
oh so it's a whole command?
yes, each line is a command
i mean the way they are structured
it's edited
now theres 2 newlines after each command
unless theres a big space after it, it's only one command
kbai
i think i'm stupid
then you're in fantastic company
nope
-a<SPACE>/
up arrow to recall previous command
easier to edit the command that way
okay
but why space between those
you guys typed it without space
Got it , nvm
finally
this has a space between the -a and the /etc
im on mobile
it doesnt look like that to me
failed
and this typed it correctly
looks like your mirrors are a bit fucked
amazing
yep
so pacman -S reflector?
yes
lol
I'd say easiest way for you would be to go through the iso, mount your OS at /mnt, and then run a reflector command (don't chroot) to replace the mirror list
can I ask what country you're in?
reflector -c <COUNTRY> --protocol https --sort rate --save /mnt/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
don't forget to change the <COUNTRY> to your country
from there you may as well do arch-chroot /mnt
and then do pacman -Syyuu
then pacman -S reflector git
yes
and how do i mount my os
what filesystem did you install it on? ext4? btrfs?
ext4
mount /dev/<PARTITON WITH EXT4> /mnt
to be clear that mount SPACE /dev/<PARTITON WITH EXT4> SPACE /mnt
bruh....
i love this os so much
is that from trying to boot up the usb?
yes
I guess reburn the usb
no way
I very strongly suspect either user error or hardware failure
im not doing that shit again
honestly i may aswell delete this whole thing
and get another os
this is too much
im sick of linux
already
out of interest, why did you want to use LQXT instead of something more beginner friendly, like gnome, kde etc.
beginners don't usually start with arch
it's very light weight, but it's not exactly a beginner friendly OS
maybe ubuntu is good?
I've had a lot of issues with ubuntu myself over the years, and do not recommend it
a lot of people opt for endeavourOS which is arch based, mint is meant to be beginner friendly but I've never used it, but if you haven't installed or used arch before, I very much recommend doing it in a VM the first couple of times round
maybe something that isnt arch?
i hate it tbh
im willing to wipe the slate clean
i may install another arch
but how do i delete this whole thing?
just mkfs over the partition you installed it on will be the most familiar one for you, but you want your usb to have something on it to replace it
my usb currently only has arch linux on it rn
I mean if the usb won't even boot then yeah, could try it again, but burning a usb shouldn't be difficult
and it doesn't mean you have to reinstall the whole of arch
@rancid lily you won't find anything lighter than arch that's also beginner friendly
I think the few distros as light would be like alpine or debian
Debian is just terrible and alpine isn't designed for desktop use in general
Trust me, arch gets easier the more you use it
Irs frustrating at first but you'll get the hang of it, I generally wouldn't recommend it either but for a shitty laptop it does wonders for preformance
Mint is pretty heavy
i want to wipe my laptop and install something else
Lxqt is probably the worst de lol
It's very light but super ugly
Maybe try alpine, it's more stable and less buggy
But I haven't used it so idk how good it is for general desktop use, I do know people whove used it and I've been recommended it in the past
If you really don't want to use arch, that's probably a good choice
Mint is Ubuntu based and Ubuntu is already really heavy
