#Arch installation help
156 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
I fucked up my installation. Somehow nothing got installed.
I don’t know what I did wrong.
what command did you run?
The normal ones. Should I use archinstall?
If you want the easy way out, it will work. But I will warn you it's buggy (somewhat) but still works
Oh okay
Can you help me with that
?
Would you like help installing it manually or archinstall? and sure.
Idk. I guess if I have help, installing manually would be appreciated.
Alright. Could you do fdisk -l for me? and take a screenshot?
And what partition type do you prefer?
Nvme is where I want to install it. I’ve partitioned it
I don’t know if it’s correct
The first one is windows
The second one is the boot
The third one is swap and the fourth is root
Or at least it was supposed to be.
what partition type would you prefer for root?
I do not have a specific preference.
Ah ok, would you like XFS (I hear it's faster)
?
What’s the difference between xfs and ext4?
xfs is faster than ext4, but i guess ext4 is the classic to-go filesystem.
I don’t mind. Whatever you think would be better
I’d it doesn’t have any drawbacks, then sure.
could you type sudo mkfs.vfat -F32 /dev/nvme0n1p2 ? (This will format the 2nd partition, which you call boot)
Are you using EFI?
I'd assume so
now do sudo mkswap /dev/nvme0n1p3 to make the swap file for the 3rd partition if you want it
Wait
I'll be here
Look
I meant sudo mkswap /dev/nvme0n1p3 mispelled it
yup it worked.
Now sudo mkfs.xfs -L ArchLinux /dev/nvme0n1p4 (-L is label, could be any name tbh)
If you want to use ext4 still, let me know, but sudo mkfs.xfs -f -L ArchLinux /dev/nvme0n1p4
kk.
It successfully formatted. now we shall mount /dev/nvme0n1p4
You don't have to take photos btw
Yayy
Oh okay
mount /dev/nvme0n1p4 /mnt
let me ask you: Do you prefer a certain desktop environment/application?
(and web browser)
I would like to use i3, but when I had that, I had some issues, such as not being able to adding the Greek keyboard layout and not having a gui for settings
Are these issues fixable?
oof
I never used i3, so I couldn't help much :/
with that specifically
Oh damn unfortunate
Which de would you recommend?
Definitely not KDE, it had fucked me up a lot of times
If you want something out of the box as a start, I guess you can try GNOME
it can always be uninstalled
How old is your computer?
2 years or three. 10th gen intel and thx 1660s
*gtx
Then you would definitely be able to run both
GNOME has a lack of customization when you exclude icon themes or extensions, but lxqt doesn't have many themes
Let’s go for Gnome for now, then I’ll see what I’ll do
linux-hardened is locked down
xen is for virtualization
Meaning?
Basically it's patched for more-so security
I will do some small virtualization, but I think the normal kernel would be good.
kk.
The normal one is good for gaming right?
Yes basically sudo pacstrap /mnt base base-devel linux linux-headers linux-firmware gnome gdm (This is the bare minimal with GNOME)
gnome supplies applications, while linux-firmware supplies firmware/drivers/etc
Oh okay
But do you happen to prefer a web browser?
I use firefox, because other ones aren’t that good on Linux imo. I used to use brave but then I saw that it had some security issues on Linux
TLDR: Firefox
I see, you can add firefox to the command I pasted.
There is also firefox-developer-edition if you want to go to the edge
I’ll install normal Firefox for now. It’ll take some time I think for all these to install
@ me when it's done installing.
I'll be here
I hate gnome
Which one do you recommend?
lxqt xfce4 i3
Do you know a lot about i3?
I’ve had some issues with i3. I couldn’t get a Greek layout to work
Alright
genfstab -U -p /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab
Done
arch-chroot /mnt
now, nano /etc/locale.gen. And that's normal.
select your locale
in /etc/locale.gen
Nano not found. I’ll install vim
Locale meaning keyboard layout?
Or what
The language?
a locale is like for language
mine is
en_US.UTF-8
Complete
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
Kk all good.
I am back
11 minutes
