Ok, so, idk what happened, was trying to install windows and all of a sudden my swap disappeared for linux and when i boot, it takes me into grub rescue.
And, i went into ubuntu live and gparted and it shows my efi partition is still there and root but the root file system is unknown and the name got changed to EFI system partition. It would be easier to show a picture probably but phone isnt charged so gna need a min

sharp crane
#

can you mount your root partition?

grand aspen
#

Lemme check

#

Nope

#

Do you think theres any chance id be able to even fix my system or at least get my data back?

#

Ooh. Phones charged, i can take a pic

#

I know that’s my root bc there’s no other partition that had exactly that amount of storage

#

And it was the first partition

#

It has boot and esp flag now fsr

#

@sharp crane any idea with these photos?

#

I’m worried that all my data might be gone 😭

radiant nymph
#

Weird

quiet lion
#

it was a swap partition yes?

#

you can recover the lost swap partition via recreating the partition, or using a swapfile instead

radiant nymph
#

I wonder if windows tried turning the first partition into an esp and fucked sone stuff up

grand aspen
late shell
#

consider if ur really need swap aswell

late shell
grand aspen
#

The first one

radiant nymph
grand aspen
#

Nvme0n1p1

#

Yh, I want a swap

quiet lion
unique crag
quiet lion
#

so you also lost your root?

radiant nymph
late shell
grand aspen
#

Well, idk, I think so bc it’s still there but as a efi system partition?

radiant nymph
grand aspen
#

Will I be able to get my data back or is it gone

late shell
grand aspen
#

Ext4

late shell
radiant nymph
#

Pretty sure the bot has a hot command for swap

radiant nymph
#

Tl;dr it’s a requirement for having decent memory management that doesn’t cause disk thrashing or other issues

drowsy mantle
#

out of topic but what's the difference between zram and swap

radiant nymph
#

Partition or file or whatever, it’s still a good idea

grand aspen
#

I’m not able to mount the partition to check what’s inside, it says unable to detect file system for both

late shell
radiant nymph
#

Ah

grand aspen
#

Nah, if my data’s gone tho, like, idk what I’m gna do

late shell
quiet lion
drowsy mantle
#

oooh thx

quiet lion
#

yeah, zram basically creates a compressed ram disk, most common use is mounting this compressed ram disk as swap

grand aspen
#

Is there anything I could do? I don’t even mind resetting as long as my root partition still has all my data

late shell
unique crag
#

will recovery software work to recover data ?

quiet lion
#

if you wanna use zram as swap, i'd recommend zram-generator

grand aspen
#

So does that mean my data would be gone?

#

Damn

#

I’m actually like

late shell
grand aspen
#

Stressed af

unique crag
late shell
#

if u can find a way to essentially remind that partition of what filesystem it should be then ur data is likely still on there

grand aspen
#

Hmm

#

Maybe if I change the flags because currently it’s boot and esp

late shell
#

if ur gonna dualboot windows and linux always install windows first coz linux is smart to avoid windows windows will just bulldoze anything in its way (usually ur efi partition :) )

grand aspen
#

Nah, f that, from now, I ain’t letting windows anywhere near Linux, gotta have its own drive

late shell
#

and if u have the option install windows on a completely separate disk to further reduce the chance of windows breaking things

quiet lion
#

try this out @grand aspen

#

wait, wrogn screenshto

grand aspen
#

?

#

Oh

quiet lion
#

attempt data rescue

radiant nymph
#

The win installer devs made some stupid assumptions on drive layout rather than probing the disk, creating this mess

grand aspen
#

That’s not an option for me

#

Maybe bc I’m in Ubuntu live usb?

#

Or ac bc

radiant nymph
#

Data rescue might be a separate package

grand aspen
#

Oh

radiant nymph
#

Could be a gui frontend for some recovery software that’s hidden if not on the system

#

Kde does this a lot, not sure about gnome stuff

quiet lion
#

this works cause there's this thing called quick formatting, quick formatting doesn't actually erase data, it just removes the partition table for that data, so it can't be identified normally

late shell
#

free money

grand aspen
#

Ooh

quiet lion
grand aspen
#

All the updates r shit

late shell
#

frfr

radiant nymph
#

The devs aren’t idiots, they’re just not given the time to write something of decent quality and stability for these parts of the software

quiet lion
#

windows memory on disk consists of

  • hiberfile.sys
  • pagefile.sys
  • swapfile.sys
    it has them all lmao
radiant nymph
#

To management, the installer is going to be something the user interacts with for only an hour or so, and the chances of it being a new system are fairly high, so they save money by putting very little time into the installer

grand aspen
# quiet lion

Is there some sort of software alternative I could get on my Ubuntu live usb?

quiet lion
#

check for gparted's optional dependencies

grand aspen
#

I’ve got it but, the attempt data rescue option doesn’t show

quiet lion
#

and install those optional dependencies

grand aspen
#

Oh?

quiet lion
#

can't help here, forgor how apt works

late shell
# radiant nymph It’s probably because management is laser focused on providing new shiny stuff o...

ah yes new shiny stuff like moving the taskbar buttons to the centre and removing most customisation options lmfao, i think they’re more focused on how to make the most money from the least work and that is prbly more and more data overcollection and advertising in the os so that’s what the main development goes towards, i find it so funny when ppl are like but xyz can’t be good without a profit incentive despite the fact that a profit incentive can make things much much worse if taken too far

radiant nymph
#

I mean the development effort is going somewhere

grand aspen
#

Anyone know how apt works? lol

late shell
late shell
radiant nymph
#

My guess is a lot of commercial software gets the most attention, along with the big stuff™️ like directx and azure

grand aspen
#

Oh, the package names, what are the optional packages I need to get so that I can attempt data rescue?

radiant nymph
#

Windows barely makes them money these days since a lot of people just upgrade for free, don’t activate, find a sketchy discounted license, or buy from oems that get a discount on licenses

late shell
radiant nymph
#

The services on top of windows are what keep them going

grand aspen
#

I

radiant nymph
#

This is kinda off topic from the ticket now tho

grand aspen
#

Ok, @quiet lion back to u lmao

#

Yk the names of the optional packages needed?

#

Brb

radiant nymph
#

The arch page lists the deps

grand aspen
#

Back

quiet lion
#

i think it's gpart?

radiant nymph
#

Yea

#

gpart seems to be the one

grand aspen
#

Ah, kk

quiet lion
grand aspen
#

Ty

#

Maybe it’s called something else on Ubuntu or smth

radiant nymph
#

Needs to run apt update

quiet lion
#

oh yeah, sync first

radiant nymph
#

The package exists but this error usually means apt needs to refresh

quiet lion
grand aspen
#

Ooh

#

Sry was gone to pray

#

I’ll try that rn

#

Oh, I’m so dumb

#

I didn’t even connect to Wi-Fi lol

radiant nymph
#

Guh

grand aspen
late shell
#

maybe apt update first - potentially the package has been removed from the repos wouldn’t put it past ubuntu it’s a dogshit distro

grand aspen
#

Ah

sharp crane
grand aspen
#

?

sharp crane
#

you already did apt update

grand aspen
#

Oh ye

#

So

#

Should I look online for different sources to download it or smth or idk

drowsy mantle
#

maybe it is fetching the packages from the cdrom?

#

idk

grand aspen
#

Idek what that means, I only used Ubuntu for like 3 months before switching to arch

#

So i barely understand it

#

Ima go for a bit and have a break, ping me if any replies pls

grand aspen
#

Hey so

#

Will gparted live have the attempt data rescue option?

radiant nymph
#

Probably

grand aspen
#

I shall try that then lol

grand aspen
# radiant nymph Probably

Nvm, doesn’t have the attempt data option, you’d think that it’d have all the dependency’s since its literally an iso just for gparted

#

Guys

#

I feel so embarrassed, I just checked online and then checked the screenshot again

#

I thought I was supposed to right click on the actual partition and the option would be there, I didn’t check “device” 😭 sryyy

drowsy mantle
#

dw

grand aspen
#

I’m trying it rn, it’s searching for file systems on the partition

quiet lion
#

bruh 💀

drowsy mantle
#

bruh

#

💀

quiet lion
#

so you weren't looking at the menu bar

grand aspen
#

No-

quiet lion
# quiet lion

when my screenshot literally shows it yesterday 🗿

grand aspen
#

Idk where I got right clicking on the partition from

#

Anyways, apparently this takes a long time, if I do get my root partition back, I’d have to reinstall arch again I’d guess and then move my data back?

quiet lion
#

while this tries to recover partitions

#

if you want to recover files instead, there's photorec, which is included in the testdisk package

grand aspen
#

Photorec? What does that do?

#

Oh, searched it up. Sounds good

#

Thanks

grand aspen
#

Ok, I think ima try testdisk. Apparently it takes like days to complete

#

Gparted takes like days to complete*

quiet lion
#

after isntalling testdisk

#

run the photorec command

grand aspen
#

Fsr I can’t get testdisk on Ubuntu either

quiet lion
#

try running the command lol

#

maybe it's included? idk

grand aspen
#

It isn’t

#

This is so annoying :/

#

Maybe I’m just not able to get it on the live usb and I have to install Ubuntu?

#

I thought of an idea

#

Maybe I should install arch all over again (tbh, I cba but I’m gna have to anyways) and then from arch use test disk and retrieve all my data hopefully

quiet lion
#

well, you risk overwriting the data you want to retrieve the more you write to the disk

grand aspen
#

i installed arch-

#

now im going to attempt to get the data back

grand aspen
#

im so anxious

#

so far it says 0 files found, i havent got much faith tbh

#

but im still badly hoping it works

#

aw

#

it didnt work

#

man

#

im so sad

#

i had so much and now its all gone

#

i even had a minecraft world i played a lot on there with one of my friends, almost everyday and now thats gone

#

cant believe it

#

😭
