Originally, they had 6k people

On the explosion of the generator, 2k male veterans died, leaving only the female veterans alive since they didn't go to that specific raid, instead attacking the most developed Cornish colony (the only one that could almost work without the main city)

The story starts with the original leadership of New Cornwall (back then Bravedust) did a bad job and almost killed all of the population

At this point, it was already 10 years in this new world

The Duke got support from some old world aristocracy old people and instructed on who/what he need emulate, and so he decided on this identity of the Duke of Cornwall. The children of the nobles didn't actually know he wasn't the Duke of Cornwall, and he even got married to a noble woman to increase the plausibility of this tale.

He was already very well-liked since he was a renowned researcher; one of the best regarding steam core technology

And so, he ascended to power with a reduced population under him. Under his rule, they prospered, healed their population back to normal numbers, established numerous outposts and a big colony, all in 10 years

And then, 20 year mark, the Floefolk arrived, demanding tribute or they would raid/pillage the city.

The Duke didn't think it was wise to fight them - it would just put the city in the same situation again

At this point, everyone in the city adored him nd didn't mind the "absolute power" he had as everyone lived good lives. Didn't help that they were tricked into thinking he was the rightful heir to the British Empire.

For 9 years, the aid continued

And then, the Engineer started threatening him. He wanted power - wanted the Duke to give him privileges, rigging the generator. He didn't feel it was fair that someone that was once on the same level as him could bask in glory

The Duke managed to not give him much for a full year

In the meanwhile, the police force of New Cornwall planned to overthrow the Duke, making him a figurehead. They wanted to establish a Parliament and cut aid to the Floefolk, having support from the colony as they promised it considerable seats in the Parliament

This would essentially turn New Cornwall into a state controlled by the police, as the seats wouldn't be assigned in any kind of fair system. Essentially, an Oligarchy. They wished to exert more control over their settlements, and possibly even attack the Floefolk first, before actually cutting aid.

So, they launched a revolution.

Seeing the revolution, the Floefolk sensed opportunity to take some extra resources, as they were starting to have an increased number of births and children, and saw a need to get more. Their leader, Alfred "Floeson", a man who, self-reportedly, survived in an ice floe for a whole year before arriving in this landmass, lead the assault with his veteran men. He sent his youngest son, Marcel, to lead veteran women to attack the colony.

In the meanwhile, the Enigineer was actually using the situation to try and blackmail the Duke more

Seeing no way out of this as both Floefolk and parliamentary forces approached the place he was in, he stole the control from the Engineer and pressed the button, exploding the generator and almost killing him, leaving half of his face basically molten while killing the Engineer, the 2 thousand Floefolk, and a good amount of the Parliamentarists.
