ok yeah, i've decided i just want to get this hack released ASAP
stuff to do:
Move everything to world 1 and get rid of the tutorial (hopefully one of god's strongest soldiers makes me a custom worldmap cuz i am very incapable eek) (Alternatively, put every level in its' own world and use the worldmap as a level select or something idk)
Make a harder version of will smith and my contest level that gets rid of the mutliple routes and is adjusted to better suit the hack.
Change the tileset of level 2 to use a scrolling rainbow effect
Make multiple shell colors to match the different themes
Make a new logo
Make a new titlescreen
Merge the shell section I made with the current sky level.
@idle nest actually would it be feasible to let someone go straight into levels from the bottom screen?

What matters is making a pattern that’s repeatable by itself, which is why my hack is so ugly (I’m quite lazy about that and i want everything to just be smooth and cirsp)
But the tilesets in my contest level i’m more happy with and you can see there’s an underlying pattern that works

Right now the state of the hack:
Tutorial/Level 1 - Waiting on code hack but finished layout
Neon heights/Level 2 - Finished
Mario_Kitsune/Level 3 - First section finished, second section needs new gameplay
Paradisio/Level 4 - Needs some tiling fixes and goomba retexture but looking good, might make longer
A familiar place/Level 5 - Done except tile water texture, might tweak 2nd section
Wu wei/Level 6 - Needs a tileset
Bliss/Level 7 - needs visual work (a new background/decorations) and some playtesting
I might add a modified version of Temple of Time to the hack, as well as a ka-bomb level i scrapped but got a new idea for after seeing the bob-omb themed level in Hartmann’s TAS of that old japanese hack, which would bump the total level count up to nine.
Still to do:
Title screen (i have an idea for this and can easily do it)
World map (No clue, help from someone else definitely needed)

I am fine with having music on my hack if there’s a button on the bottom screen to mute it
But forcing the player to listen to the same song on repeat for 2 hours while they try to beat each of the last few levels feels like torturing the player
Kaizo should be a relaxing experience with snacks!
This section is cool but it utilizes two bugs that i can't reasonably expect the player to know about
idk how to feel about it
(One being that you can preform a full-height jump off a spike without taking damage if it's next to a ledge, which is unintuitive but not hard to perform, the other being a wallclip jump which real marioheads would know of from the fact that it appears in almost every mario game but that the average nsmb romhack peruser would not be able to intuit)

The player should know how to clip into the wall, but not how to jump straight up like that on the way out

The problem with the name “neo-kaizo” is that it doesn’t translate. The association “neo” has with futuristic things is unique to english and doesn’t have any bearing on the prefix’s greek origins. The romanized japanese word “kaizo” comes from a word that means rearranged or rearrangement, and again it has deeper implications only in english outside of the SMW community.
The japanese equivalent to neo, romanized as “shin” would be an unfitting thing to attach to the origin word of kaizo, because “shin kaizo” would mean “new rearrangement” which makes no sense because one day the hack would get old and it would no longer be a new rearrangement…

I want a slow, grueling water level
The deep cheep level would be the hardest to make but has a lot of potential
If people do want it it would probably be a very slow process to make because the water mechanics in this game are not good
It would be the most unique and potentially interesting level in the game but would need to be perfect i think, not worth attempting without enough interest
I think the broozer+swoop level fits the hack the most of all the ideas
Lakithunder fight would probably be preceded by a 5-screen castle
Unless ppl want a different bossfight in which case i could put lakithunder at the end of the heaven themed level
And make that the halfway boss
Mini mario level could be rlly unique but interest seems low so far so i probably won’t bother, i do think the lack of existing mini mario kaizo in this game is sad though

I think low gravity has creative uses but it does slow the pace of things in a way that could be boring, the level will probably be a vertical level where mario climbs a tower just because that structure avoids time that would otherwise be spent waiting for mario to fall
For example a bullet bill escort level but the bullet bill is pointing upward
that's already a bunch of interesting ideas

When i originally played through the game i skipped world 5, so there was definitely times while making levels where i was like grr i wish swoops were in the game so i could put a swoop here

The hack is in a weird spot
I’ve been thinking
I feel like it’s too boring and not enough actors from the game are used
I think certain existing levels need a third section, which fortunately is possible due to how the respawn patch works
Ideas for rooms in the 5-screen castle:
-Hanging blocks section (the blocks from the ghost houses)
-Crowber section
-Fucked up evil section with a first-frame p-switch jump
-Fucked up evil section with a shell suit air jump
-Survival section using a trampoline mushroom (or bouncy block code hack if someone swag can port it)
Some of these levels are super short but i don’t want to make existing sections longer because they won’t be fun to play
me when the fucked up evil sections
I’ll try to arrange the level in a way where those sections are optional, but faster for speedrunning
I do think it would be very sad to release the hack with neither of those tricks included, so this is the least offensive way i can keep them in.
A big fear i have about the hack is that people will lose interest because it’s not creative enough or lacks substance
Once i have twelve levels i think i will have to repeatedly go back and ask “what’s the most boring level? What’s the ugliest level?” And keep raising the bar until there’s no weak points
well here the level feels pretty empty and the deco looks minimalistic. there are also no coins or things like that
added second section plus extra obstacle for the first section and some temporary indicators. just gotta think about decor.
What if i made a level that looked like Moonside from earthbound
It would be kinda like the neon or rainbow tilesets but with a fake 3d effect on the tiles kinda
And different colors

What if instead of putting these tricks in any of the levels leading up to the final boss
I made a buffed version of the lava subworld from will smith and my contest level
And made that a single-section postgame level if you find the secret exit in the final level…
It would give me an excuse to use that lava tileset again
And if it’s in a secret level i get an excuse to be as evil as i want
i can only think of gd with the 3d and ''shape-ful''(?) aesthethic lmao

I think it’s time to make the last level.

It’s gonna be an extended version of the lava section from temple of time where you you need to moonjump, break brick blocks and jump after, p-switch jump, and still do the other obstacles from the section
I might make the player do the bullshit walljump off an upward spike with a floor beneath you that the 100% TAS does but i would need to try it ingame to see if it’s actually viable
I’ve been playing MvsLO and there’s no walljump lockout when there’s a floor beneath you in that game and it’s kinda spoiling me
Maybe a future kaizo hack for this game should just remove that mechanic

The actual final level will be a swinging platform level with a lakithunder boss fight and some swinging blocks
No 5 screen castle because each screen transition is a checkpoint with the respawn patch
