For those who want to rewind the webcast w/o Twitter account
On Sunday October 13, 2024, SpaceX launched the Integrated Flight Test 5 mission with a Starship from Orbital Launch Mount A at SpaceX Starbase, TX, USA.
Description generated from the Launch Library 2 API.

Moving
I hope they release a report on how the heat tiles and ablative held up
My favourite words today:
- "The command was sent for the booster to come back"
- "Mechazilla has caught the booster"
- "Starship has landed."
hey did NS-27 go?
maybe once they move the aft flaps a bit towards the re-entry back end that will mitigate the failure point issue
uhhh
good question!
It was fwd flap
no, scrubbed
It’s fixed on block 2
no
also called leeward
Chopsticks lowering
OOO
forward side takes more heat right? because they don't want plasma roasting the rocket engines
I'm too busy watching SBL replays
it sounded like super-heavy had a triple sonic boom?
there's still ice on there... is it actually empty??
We got two double sonic booms on our audio: booster and HSR
HSR sonic boom came up about 50 seconds after booster sonic boom
HSR?
hotstage ring
yes cuz it got jettisonned after boostback burn
huh
they jettisoned the HSR following boostback shutdown to prevent it falling off again to save mass
it fell a few km offshore
it was first done on flight 4
not flight 3? 🤭
not intentionally on flight 3
oh you referred to that here with "again"
so anyone know what got damaged on booster?
@MarcusHouse Some of the outer engine nozzles are a little warped from high heating & strong aero forces. Easily fixable.
why did starship explode
Fire + excess fuel = BOOM
tipping over
and yeah the fire stuff
made a small hole and that shit can make the thing just go poof
Probably
museum piece
pls sf
They did that with the first F9 that landed
static fire is such a shout
B1019 got static fired three weeks after its landing
B11 landing explosion deniers be like: S30 definitely survived the landing
ships full of explosive substance rolling around in water often go boom
(rember leaked B11 landing pic after the official video? some ppl claimed it fake
)
I thought they triggered the FTS?
due to pressure change and said explosive substance
I thought so too because it was very violent looking
but I don't know
and also from the centre of the ship
oh right b11 exploded, thats why it was in pieces when they went fishing for it
tim looks constipated
the large pic on the right is an aft flap, said the SpaceX announcer
i concur
the bottom left pair look identical
so the top left that's burning would also be aft?
top left is forward
how often are they using bottom stabilization pins? cuz seems like it's just hanging on top pins only
okay guess the bottom left two just look similar without actually being the same position
Tim is trying to hold the flap together with his willpower
it worked
if he was in the Indian ocean the ship would probably have survived the bellyflop and water touchdown
The stabs are not engaged, they will once the booster is fully centered in the rail
he did say "engine fire" and "I don't think it will make it" quite accurately though

Little bit of minor damage on that chine. Overall vehicle is looking pretty darn clean!
Wow I still remember him from the Max-Q Entertainment days (that was during the last years of Space Shuttle - you gotta watch back all those mission recap music videos!)
Holy shit
hello slug
What's the name of that youtuber that just says that's not right and not really much else?
Thunderf00t?
Yeah, that one. Thanks!
I honestly cannot believe he is still relevant
I’ll admit I watched him in the past… I was 12 and in kind of an edgy internet atheist phase I very quickly got over lmao (far before he touched anything SpaceX)
He was just as much of an idiot then as he is now
Same
I remember when his content was just "look how stupid these creationists are haha"
Which I mean yeah young-Earth creationists are but he wasn't really contributing anything either

Any idea what ift6 might have? Hoping for raptor relight
flap hinge burn through (again)
Updated mission page:
Starship’s fifth flight test lifted off on October 13, 2024, with our most ambitious test objectives yet as we work to demonstrate techniques fundamental to Starship and Super Heavy’s fully and rapidly reusable design.
And on our first try, Mechazilla caught the booster.
Following a successful liftoff, ascent, stage separation, boostback burn, and coast, the Super Heavy booster performed its landing burn and was caught by the chopstick arms of the launch and catch tower at Starbase. Thousands of distinct vehicle and pad criteria had to be met prior to the catch attempt, and thanks to the tireless work of SpaceX engineers, we succeeded with catch on our first attempt.
Ready to catch a booster? starshipthegame.spacex.com
Prior to catch, Starship executed another successful hot-staging separation, igniting its six Raptor engines and completing ascent into outer space. It coasted along its planned trajectory to the other side of the planet before executing a controlled reentry, passing through the phases of peak heating and maximum aerodynamic pressure, before executing a flip, landing burn, and splashdown at its target area in the Indian Ocean. The flight test concluded at splashdown 1 hour, 5 minutes and 40 seconds after launch.
The entire SpaceX team should take pride in the engineering feat they just accomplished. The world witnessed what the future will look like when Starship starts carrying crew and cargo to destinations on Earth, the Moon, Mars and beyond.
Congratulations to the SpaceX team for taking this leap in our quest to make life multiplanetary. And thank you to our customers, Cameron County, spaceflight fans, and the wider community for the continued support and encouragement.
wait the hsr detached during flight 3???
wtf
Does anyone like Thuderf00t?
yeah during aero descent
got ripped off
no, only indirect evidence of it being missing
ah
Didn’t he also turn out to be massively transphobic ?
I swear half these people u lot talk about are transphobic
Why not
Thunderfoot is one of the only people I know who has simultaneously pissed off both the left and right, it's quite funny actually
WOAH
SpaceX with the banger photos and always
Man when that 4K video starts coming out
We be eating good
can we just appreciate how reliable raptor has become
still remember the SN8 raptor aborts
and all the aborted sf of other early prototypes
I see the booster has been lowered onto the OLM
Let's see how they detank it...
and today we had what, 33+10+13+6+3=65 startups
raptor not working at this point is almost an afterthought
is it on the pad?
or is it still held by the chopsticks and is just barely above the mount
ship 33
sooooo
does it mean they can lift if without this pice of equipment? (I forgro how it's called 💀)
if yes than it's so over for ppl each time yelling "the only way it leaves OLM is by launch"
Maybe they just don't really care if these Raptors get damaged or not
now was that necessary
NXF having a normal one again
Meme.
I guess someone else created this video a while ago. Go check out the original video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beL0_NHZ0Qc&list=WL&index=1
All credit goes to this person. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3m_J5zcVNlYVfQC-fUQhrA
so are they firing again
damage inspection
chat is we thinkin they keep it on the olm, bring in the work platform, fix the engines and sf
And whatever the fuck happened with IFT-1
yes because he already got blueballs from the scrubbed blue origins

Me when
what😭😭
hey I thought it was good. okay probably not.
the only people who think puns are good are the ones that come up with them
I'll take my leave
I'm completely convinced they 100% knew it was gonna fall apart like that and just sent it anyway to get rid of the old hardware and gather data for an actual attempt on IFT-2
Which isn't a terrible approach really
except for the public safety risk
Well yeah true
oh man the FAA was probably relax back then. rockets weren't capable of going far. not much work to do
they wouldn’t have sent it if they knew it would be that bad
in a lot of ways they got lucky
I mean they probably didn't think it would be that bad but they 100% knew it wasn't making orbit
now it's like orbital flight paths and sonic booms and wow
loss of gimbal control and FTS that didn’t work effectively could’ve gone very bad
no probably the opposite
i wonder how far it would’ve gotten if ship separated
IIRC after the booster landed in the ocean on IFT-4 they literally started shooting at it with rifles to make it sink faster
did they actually
I don't remember if it's been confirmed
at least that was planned some years ago
Or if it was just a thing they discussed but didn't end up doing
but on ift4 i think it exploded by itself
yeah i haven’t heard abt that happening
hmm true I mean it did go pretty far. just really tumbly
it deffo did not survive the tilt
also starship had fucked with the faa previously
insane that that was 4 years ago
as a fan of naval history I don't think a ship 9m in diameter would sink any faster with just bullet holes
you can get hit by a torpedo and be limping along for half a day before you're finally flooded enough to sink
indeed
it was truly the craziest thing i have ever seen
i think this ties with SN8's flight
THEY FUCKING DID IT
Like
What the actual fuck
A skyscraper-sized first stage
Caught in the air
By giant robot arms
this is like some sci-fi movie ass shiot
I was sincerely convinced they were going to annihilate the launch site in some way
When Elon announced the plan to catch the boosters, everyone thought he was a madman, and perhaps he still is, but the engineers at SpaceX made it happen
crazy huh
i guess i’m not allowed to be pessimistic about ship catching now am i 😭😭
well I gave it a more than 50% chance of success given the booster was steering pretty well IFT 4
i was expecting an abort to ocean
they said catching superheavy is not at all similar to landing falcon, its a different beast entirely, and they still succeeded on the first try
i thought they were ouright just gonna abort it
it’s kinda crazy what they’ve done with raptor
it only needed the inner engines after all. I do wonder if they could have lit some outer engines to compensate if an inner engine didn't light?
I completely forgot about this
ship catching oh man bellyflop into the tower
like one of those wrestling moves from the corner
Can’t wait to see that
sn9-esque ballistic missile
that was a typical reaction to today's events
they caught a booster
literally all of crew 8 departure, ns27 and europa clipper were cancelled
delayed
was there a 5th thing scheduled for today
starlink
Can’t wait for Europa Clipper
but that was delayed a few days ago
Yeaaahhh soon enough
oh my fucking god
i deffo wonder how they’ll do it bc theoretically it would be coming by the far side of the tower?
why are people saying level 10 on Mechazilla IO is difficult? level 9 was much harder, 10 only took like 3 tries
Yeah ??
The thing is literally gonna end up orbiting Ganymede at the end of its life
It’ll buff out
wait actually, part of that does look like its having an "issue"
whats the black splodge in the middle of it?
what happened here 👀
an engine bell probably
the glow in the engine bay is wild
I asked @FAANews if any investigation would be required as a result of @SpaceX IFT-5.
They replied “The FAA assessed the operations of the SpaceX Starship/Super Heavy Flight 5 mission that launched from Boca Chica, Texas, on Oct. 13, 2024. All flight events for both the
2 in a row 🥳🥳
IFT 6 next week confirmed
ship has sf'ed
daymn
[ Credit: NSF Starbase Live ]
and OLM/OLIT inspections
probably extensive repairs
did they rotate the booster?
or did it come in that perfectly that the bqd port was in line with the bqd
They re-aligned it after landing
The booster did not land exactly on the center of the arms but that was expected
They have pins to tweak the location of the booster in the rails
deluge did indeed go off during the catch
Just like on flight 4, on the rehearsal, and per documentation
alright yeah that makes sense
so what do you reckon they're gonna do with B12 now
check engines?
and then roll it to rocket garden or keep it on pad and do testing?
No idea
Testing at Massey's maybe
cheeky cryo test
what is that browser
did.... did you not know its full name was Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer??
He spent ages trying to figure out what the "black smoke" was during the ship landing burn... it was the ship venting during the landing burn. The flames made it look black but it would have been white.....
also "Finally clapping at something that hasn't blown up" when they caught the booster
road still closed?
Flight 6 this Saturday confirmed, B12 reflight with ship 31 ontop
Aight guys place your bets, will SpeX be able to cram in another flight before the end of the year?
Ye I’d say so unless they wait for S33
80% confident
Given that they have already been doing all the work refitting and testing S31 and S33 probably still needs a lot of work...
I'm saying nay for the sole reason of Berger's law
time between IFT 3 and 4 would almost make it this year if applied
(I hate calling it Berger's law, but it's a good law)
Berger law only applies to maiden launches
I feel like test flights kinda follow the same principle
But idk don't trust me I'm just an idiot on Discord dot com
They haven’t even begun de tiling S31
Huh
Definitely not methane
But nitrogen would make sense
they can optimize the landing burn a lot https://fxtwitter.com/Cosmo_556/status/1845554958604657051
Unreal video from my grandpa’s friend of the catch.
@SpaceX @elonmusk #SpaceX
oh that is INSANE
Gunna be watching videos from this launch for a while.
Everyone was loosing their shit at Isla Blanca. Including myself. I’m scared to listen to myself on my video. Lol
Hey @ale-
is that a PIRATE SHIP?
Yeah
oh damn it’s gone from ‘please no pings i won’t help’ to ‘DO NOT FUCKING PING ME YOU IDIOT I WILL KILL YOU’
My crow is that the reentry trajectory will be set up so that the ship slightly overshoots and goes out over the Gulf, just offshore. Then, if all ship and tower parameters are in range, it will shift its trajectory back towards the ground next to the launch site during subsonic descent, then to the tower once the engines light up.
Thought you were taking about a pet crow for a sec
What did you think of the launch since you had to miss the live part
true
i’ve watched the stream 8 times now
bit late but damn it was cool
Real
wait so where did S30 go?
did it get destacked?
booster still on the pad so they havent launched yet
Oh that's because I was getting annoying DMs literally minutes before launch and I was like ffs go fuck off
yknow what that’s fair
Oh makes sense
timing and cropping of this was impeccable
he posted that message literally right after mine sent
like less than second after
literally both of us just decided to screenshot and post it at that time and we both turned out to send it like at the same exact second
that’s a hell of a jinx
It really is
what view
from booster right after sep
it’s like a small view you can see right above the gridfin which makes it even weirder
because like that exact view, exact frame
aims for just before the tower, does the flip above-ish the tower, hovers in
at least, thats how its done in most sims (e.g ksp, and that was quite similar with the booster catch, even down to the pointing engines towards the tower base)
Part 3 of catch attempt in KSP now catching Starship! With 2 tower POVs + 2 ship POVs.
This was made with 2 kOS scripts, one for Mechazilla target tracking and another for Starship flip and suicide burn throttle control. I control the yaw, pitch and roll myself.
you can def be pessimistic about that
completely different animal from booster catching
booster catching is like shooting a guitar pick across a football field
ship catching will be like shooting a nickel across three
I used to be pessimistic about ship catching but after both demonstrations today, my confidence has gone way up. Especially with the highly accurate ship landing. They just need to make the ship not keep almost dying on reentry
eh.
we'll see how it goes ig
lord knows SpX will keep on trying until it works anyways lmao
i feel like the targeting isn’t the issue ngl
they can probably do it
and it’ll be awesome to see
How will ship reentry work with it coming east across texas?
Well if they lose a tile or debris on entry that could be less than optimal as it could cause property damage or injury if it makes it all the way down
Yea that's what I'm thinking, ik Starliner enters into White Sands but white sands is also massive
i imagine it’ll be treated like a shuttle reentry
it’s more likely to break up bc of the shield being in active development still so
it’s prob gonna be a minute
would be really bad to drop debris on populated areas
LMAO
lmaoooo
yep that was what I was thinking, seems way too jank right now but who knows once we get the V2 ships
just saw a car go to the pad

||/s||
ok pal
I need to see this now lmao
I guess I missed it
an observation
https://x.com/robertpearlman/status/1845464548129534193
Good comment (man 2012 was a century ago)
I had about as much faith in Mechazilla working on the first try as I did the sky crane successfully landing Curiosity on Mars. I have to start putting more trust in the engineers.
That was amazing.
An epic ending for this starship, enjoy exploring the depths of the ocean
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
yeah the skycrane is the best comparsion in terms of utter insanity at first glance
Party time
big ol party this time
I wanna go to that party
bro can see into the future
future sight
still looks unreal
float
mmmm crispy ablator
with love a 160ft tall pressurized steel soda can with explosive gases inside will not survive falling over
Real
personally i would, i'm built different
ofc ofc i forgot to factor the built different factor in
if i were a 160ft tall pressurized steel soda can with explosive gases inside that is
i do that every day actually
if i stopped i would literally die, i think i might be addicted 😔
Man... imagine if we had those sort of external heat shield views on the Shuttle
slave to O2
we must stop this #nomoreO2
o2 is a dangerous oxidizer that is a key ingredient in many explosive materials and millions of people are inhaling it DAILY
Together we can stop this
smh everyone who inhales this substance dies. We must fight #bigO2
What was different with the engines this flight
33 of them came back this time
No but why was it a different colour and wasn’t it faster
i dont think the blue color on ascent was because the engines were different
Might've been due to the lighting at the specific time of day?
the cyan was because of the twilight
and then the oranger plume on descent is something i’m still trying to work out but might have something to do with the speed it’s descending at
or the fact that it was the inner 13 only so it looked more concentrated
hadnt the sun risen by launch?
yeah but barely over the horizon to just give it that effect
it wasn’t fully
same for the vulcan launch
check the pics and the plume looks cyan later after SRB sep
simply how methalox reacts to light at that time
Also the orange landing brun plume was real hot you could Feel that heat from Isla Blanca
During liftoff i could feel a little tiny bit of heat but landing had wayy more
Somone needs to like ban repossting i try to find unique footage from people but no its just a bunch of npcs reposting the SpaceX stream footage
Probably fire mixing with the plume
Any idea why there's always way more methane compared to oxygen in the tanks?
raptors running ox rich ig
But they run out at the same rate
also there’s just the methane in the tank being used by the downcomer compared to the specific landing tank for LOX
so the LOX tank is set to use the exact amount needed for landing while methane just uses whats left
(+ if the tanks are both full, shouldn't both bars be full?)
no
Why not?
because the tanks aren’t full
Okay, if both tanks are fully fuelled for the mission, surely the bar should start full
i think for LOX they combine landing tank and the main residuals
they don’t fuel them fully
Like at takeoff
That's why I said full fueled for the mission
thought you meant landing
because that’s just how they fuel it
but the stream ui goes to 100%, right?
no
Did the guy tracking from Florida get it
Here was my view of Starship Vacuum Raptor shutdown during @SpaceX IFT-5 tracked from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Florida! RocketTraker did the near-impossible again, using trajectory data from @flightclubio! The full…
Is the beach open?
Technically they can open it whenever they want. Was at Hopper Haus last night and that was discussed. The blocks aren’t on Google maps right now. I wonder….
Road is opening
👀 right now?
Yes
Woah
Probably has something to do with there being the separate landing tank for the lox
Oh I just remembered at Islablanca 10 seconds maybe after the sonic boom I heard it reflect off something far away
Maybe it isn't measured by the same gauges
Looking at the nsf live feed it looks like they are going to move the booster off the pad.
mightve been the HSR
Yes it was the HSR
We heard it on our mics too
There's not really anything in South Texas where it can reflect from
How far off the shore did the HSR land, do we know?
I know people saw it splashdown from the hotels at SPI
So it might have been 2-3km
Someone needs to make this but instead of Twitter and X it’s
WE WILL NOT BE CALLING STARSHIP FLIGHTS “IFT”
lol
Ohh right
I was able to see it falling but lost site when it went under the land
It was tumbling
Rotating
Man, I still cannot believe they caught it
Samew
Irl it was wilder getting slap by sonic boom right as catch there was so much happening i didnt know what to focus on
Hsr falling and wb57 tracking
Like I’ve seen so many animations and simulations but they just don’t prepare you for the real thing
For a launch in general watching alot of videos of starship flights pretty much prepared me for the launch part pretty much
Like it was what i expected other than it beeing quieter than i expected
How do you make those
blender
Oh
I love it thank you so much I will use the heck out of this
do you have blender on speed dial or some shit lmao
the white came out a little overexposed, im trying to figure out why it looks different in the preview
We need a blender template for this for speedial uses
better. hereby public domain
Finnly discords letting post my whole videos
Aw i trimmed out the hsr sonic boom oops
does this work
real
heres hsr sonic boom
good focus
Yeah the phone focused on a bag for the whole time
And then my other phone over heated half way through
Or something idk
Then i left the lens cap on my camera
Only thing that got it was my gopro and i got dslr photos of landing
pentuple redundancy with 40% success
Fuck I completely forgot about that
Starhopper was only 5 years ago
This is absolutely insane oh my god
We truly live in the best time period in human history
Adhd + adrenaline moment
yeah my performance suffers too under pressure
The more I look at the footage
the more I deeply understand why some people here had exaggerated reactions

ugh starhopper was five years ago
Wdym
Everything about this flight was absolutely insane
this is the most erfffli thing ever
the vertical translation is crazy
Oh wow, it's so apparent now, but of course, with a recovered Booster 12, they need to REMOVE its FTS (Flight Termination System). What a nice addition to Flight 5's milestones!
https://t.co/e3xbqPnwZ5
Do they still have those double decker cheeseburgers
From this angle you can really see it, no where near hitting the tower
is it confirmed that the upper stage sank?
I mean
or is it still just bobbing in the indian ocean
Still probably sank
Yeah same
they do in the indian ocean apparently
hell yeah
banger shot
that visual combined with the audio is INSANE
live Joey reaction: "okay so we won"
Better not be hyping us up to early
Interestellar Gateway not hyping up stuff is like me not breathing and still being alive, it would not be natural

(who is Interstellar Gateway again)
newish Cosmic Perspective-esque group
with more money than is advisable and working on a couple crazy projects
pulling GoPros now, stay tuned lol
Oh yeah especially irl
Also j just noticed you can see the sonic boom bouncing off the ground back into the smoke
He looks like Jack in that lol

How’s ur one a video
Using fixupx
Oh it shows the normal x link
he hides it using hyperlinks
because the fixup links don’t send you to the app when you click them
so it’s easier to view while also having video
very smart
Maybe
Oh ye
New years flight
That's awesome 😄
This was such a brainfuck
Like when It was coming down i was thinking in my mind how it would fail in the next 20s but I couldn't cause it was just fucking with me that this massive thing was coming so fast
And then seeing it actually light it's engines and like smoothly move into the arms
It felt like cgi
Didn't feel real
those videos are beautiful
well that's because it was just spacex playing footage in reverse
Any videos showing boom from brownsville or far
?
Everyone just keeps reposting SpaceX views everywhere
Theres 1 i know of but they stoped recording before landing
Acording to somone i know that lives in brownsville the sonic boom woke them up
Sometimes I wonder what else goes on in the life of Eddie Treviño Jr. after seeing these notices. He's been in office since 2016, so... there's presumably an actual guy in that office who spent years working his way up in community politics to get the position of county judge. And now thousands of people across the world just know him as "the road closure guy" from these notices and nothing else.
oh he’s a happy fella dw
LITERALLY
That’s all I know him as
it’s gonna be weird as hell when he retires
https://www.cameroncountytx.gov/county-judge-eddie-trevino-jr/ From his website he seems like a perfectly fine guy

YIPPEE ONBOARDS
Amazing performance by @starlink during Flight 5 - with coverage aggregated across all terminals on the ship and booster, only 20 ms of outage on the 66 min flight (>99.999% uptime). Now using very similar software to serve rockets as we do to serve airplanes.
oooh, HSR correct?
Omg hsr
they should go get it
Considering they went and picked up B11 I wouldn’t put it past them
Go dive it
B11 had a bunch of Raptors on it that a lot of people would probably want to get their hands on. The HSR is... Well... Just a bunch of sheet metal.
I doubt SpaceX will bother recovering it.
Idk. I don't really see it being recovered unless for some reason fish and wildlife asks for it to be recovered since it's so close to shore.
It's gonna be all smashed up from hitting the water at high speed so would only be worth it's weight in scrap
Well then I hope someone else goes out there and gets it
I could see that happening maybe.
Someone might want to put it in a museum or something or someone who does scrap metal recovery as a business might go and get it.
It just doesn't seem like it would be worth SpaceX's time to rent a ship with a crane and dedicate workers to go out there and recover a hunk of metal with little proprietary value when they could be working on hardware for IFT-6 instead.
how nice of spacex to create an artificial reef /s
Basically S30
Somone post it to a ufo group for them to debunk lol
Actually they probably wont be doing any debunking just believing
Spitter try not to be horny about rockets challenge impossible

i-
no.
haylee that was literally you before, during and after the launch
yes I know

fair reaction tbh
WHAT THE FREAKY
listen they could be taking about acidic goo
So, was that better then the SN flips? I think it was, granted I was more of a lurker when those were happening, but yea
weird cum but ok
acidic goo is stored in the balls
Idk it looked like it was drifting kinda when it landed
ah I should have clarified, I mean more in a spectacle kinda way, like was that cooler to see
B12 being removed from OLM
B12 has been lifted!
again
is this supposed to be see-through?
https://x.com/nasaspaceflight/status/1845659862799147110?s=46
https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1845663777254961224?s=46
@elonmusk Hope some of those engines get sent to McGregor. Flight-proven Raptors put through their paces on the test stand will be amazing data points for future reusability.
they've also put the stabaliser thingys onto the side of the booster
oh it's turning!
also, that booster looks in remarkably good condition considering it came back from (depending on who you ask) space. Just a few scratches 🤣
95km*
Yes
That's why I said depending on who you ask. According to virgin galactic, that's space.
Virgin galactic is wrong
¯_(ツ)_/¯
It's not VG's opinion/definition. It's USAF's definition and VG simply follows it
USAF is wrong
does the starship cloud plume on ascent happen because a part of the exhaust gases is water vapor and the air becomes a hot saturated solution of water that condensates when its temperature reaches equillibrium with the surrounding colder air
and does it happen in only at some altitudes because the preceding humidity is high enough there
haylee..

the cloud happens on pretty much every launch i think
i dunno why
but i’ve never seen one without it
https://x.com/i/status/1845966756579627167 Onboard of the catch!!!
(looking at the stud thingy)
Oh I saw this this morning, I was like… oh… (and then I cried… again…)
Imo it doesn't really matter. 100 km is just as arbitrary as 50 mi or whatever it is the U.S. uses.
At neither altitude can you breath, maintain altitude in an aircraft, do much of anything with aerodynamics, nor can you orbit a satellite practically.
The karman line, if calculated using today's technologies, would probably be different. They both exist because they "nice" numbers in the units they're based off of and correlate extremely loosely with the altitude Von Karman calculated at the time was the intersect of orbital speed and (very approximate) speed predicted to be required for flight using the technology of his particular time in history.
If it was calculated again using today's technology it would probably be different.
Just because more countries use one arbitrary number than another doesn't make either of them less arbitrary.
I mean, going higher is definitely cooler, but defining a specific altitude is mostly pointless other than for having a legal definition for where a country's airspace ends.
Oop didn't mean to write an essay
😅
Luckily you don’t have nitro
no helium pressurant?? https://fixupx.com/elonmusk/status/1846223945164329091
It will truly be glorious when the ship is caught too and the whole stack immediately flies again!
Full & immediate (no mandatory refurbishment) reusability with low cost propellant (almost 80% liquid oxygen, no helium pressurant) will mean a marginal cost per ton ~100 times better than Falcon, which is already >10 times better than the Shuttle...

ignores the bent nozzle on the right (out of pic)

i would say about 110-113km, based purely on the height that glow begins on starship
did the booster not go past 100km?
should have gone higher than flight 4
oh what the hell it only went 96km this time
rest in peace ear drums after sonic boom
I mean it's also relative. The hlow can appear on higher altitudes with higher speed (I guess so)
Here's that pic
Literally 4 in a row
scunch
The footage I got from this launch is unreal. This is 350 of 3500 photos hand stabilized showing the hot staging sequence. There's so much happening in this video every time I watch it I notice something different.
Bra…
wow
sexo
this is such an aesthetic
and to think that not all civilian recorded video has come out yet, i hope we're in for treats
I gotta say it would be a lot less interesting if stuff wasn’t flying off of it every now and then
Why could this be?
Like aseo forces coming down on landing?
Yeah I don't lol

cant wait for raptor SN314159

Different perspective other side of launch plume
they mustve color graded it to not be orange
Im assuming this is from brownsville
SpaceX launch of Flight 5 Starship rocket on 10-13-24 as seen from our driveway.
do you mean this when its in the cloud
cant wait for raptor SN981 to have g painted on it
pi^2 you mean
stop
in fact they should have just painted sqrt(g) on this one
@spacex 🚀🥢 #StarBase #Brownsville
Im trying to find a video from far away that includes the sonic boom but they all stop recording before landing
Like everyone thst knew it was happening was like at isla blanca or something eveyone else doessnt know about it and either doesnt record booster descent or stops recording before sonic boom it sucks
So I’m curious, did the plume hit the tower when it was landing, it looked like it did from some angles
Yeah
thats why they set up the new cladding prior to launch
exactly where the plume hit
Now about the one above you
https://www.facebook.com/share/r/uNMkgsaZuPCzXqGP/ heres another from mexico
See posts, photos and more on Facebook.
What?
oh, no yeah i got that
i was talking about why would engines be dented
It’s a video from far away that includes the sonic boom
No
Idk where thats taken from but i dont think its any firthur than isla Blanca
o
Im telling the distance by sonic boom delay
From isla boanca it happened almost right at touchdown

Spacex employees cheer and congratulate each other as they welcome booster home after it's first successful landing. A job well done.
just different MR
MR?
yeah that’s what i kinda assumed too but the question is like, why?
do they get more thrust from going fuel rich or
smth
Flap cam is probably the best decision this program ever made
still cant believe that they did it first try
Cool pic but a car got in the way
With Attempt #1 success, it begs the question: how soon will be the first catch attempt to fail?
9
20
1
next 3 catch attempts
Nah footloose synced better
Ok but any edit with skyfall immediately goes hard imo
Nuh uh
Yuh huh
Play that shit at a mexican funeral see what happens

work on the chopsticks continues https://fixupx.com/VickiCocks15/status/1846511224122462441
Down at the launch pad, the scaffungus has returned to the top of the OLM, crews are working on the inside of the OLM via the dancefloor and the chopsticks are undergoing maintenance.

Landing burn startup! 🎥 Look at the incredible force required to slow Starship's booster in the final moments before tower catch. Filmed at 420fps, we'll be sharing highlights of the entire track soon with @Erdayastrona…

Seeing the Raptors throttle up is crazy, also the chine cover lmao
So 3-8-3 landing burn?
3-10-3
well yea technically 13

Starship IFT-5 : Interstellar Cinematic Film
Starship IFT-5 took place on October 13th, 2024, and launched at 7:35 UTC. It is the first test flight of Starship with a successful catch of Super Heavy booster B12 by the Mechazilla ( tower arms, aka chopsticks ), and the second successful atmospheric reentry of Starship S31 , which also managed to...

no fucking way
I love [insert reusable rocket here]
googly eyes struts
tower catch
shows booster leg deployment
wait where'd the booster go
LMFAOOO I didn't notice that
the legs start to deploy, freeze, and then go all the way
lmao
and they’re just sticks

thank you instagram for successfully containing the confident morons of the internet
on the other hand credit goes to twitter for not-so-successfully containing the genuine idiots like some decrepid form of arkham asylum
That’s just rage bait
Then again it’s sorta difficult to tell if something is bait on IG unless it’s downright insane like that
Like I said
Solid chunk of people on there are complete dumbasses who think that they’re in line to be the next Nikola Tesla just because they know how to calculate Electrical Resistance
the rest of the account looks semi legit though, just posting science related slop
insert intelligence bell curve
Ah k so it’s AI generated
Yeah lol ig commenters are like that
I don’t even understand where the 150 could come from
Starship Flight 5 RAW Experience from the ground at Isla Blanca
my friend from Albuquerque iconically yells "They caught it!"
No film cameras
imagine telling someone in 2010 that the best place to see the future of launch vehicles would be mexico
@mild aurora mentioned https://vxtwitter.com/Orbital_Perigee/status/1847044462557745319
here is my live synced reaction to flight 5 with Miranda enjoy Twitter we (I) went fucking apeshit
Also Perigee sounds like my reaction lmao
THEY CAUGHT THE FUCKING BOOSTER is so real
Miranda reveal!!
Holy crap that's so much yelling
I was watching in a room with quite a few other aerospace students
Very surreal experience
I havent yelled that much in. Well. Ever
just her, she exists, that’s the reveal
I was kinda speechless as it happened because I was a bit stunned ngl
This energy
Then they landed and I was like NO WAY! THEY DID IT! THEY DID IT ON THE FIRST TRY!
Lol
I was just screaming "OH MY GOD OH MY GOD" for like a solid minute and running around in circles in my room
I just said "they did the thing!" out loud to no one
I did it to an audience of about 200k people but I don't even know if it was heard lmao
the booster was like BRRRRRRR
I then promptly posted footage of the launch to every single online community I'm in
hold on lemme listen back on the stream
Yeah the NSF stream voices got drowned out for landing
A great problem to have!
I love the "That's the thirteen-- BOOM BOOM" on the nsf stream
I don't think I'll ever forget that experience
Watching with others who care as much as you do is simply unmatched
yeah you can hear it, its like the first voice audible after catch
I watched flight 2 with a similar irl group and it was similarly insane
yeah both of us were absolutely losing our shit the whole time, Perigee like flipped the chair out from under him when catch occured, you can kinda hear it lmao
I now see why you had your mics muted for IGW stream
My reaction was: I woke up, saw a picture of the booster hanging from the sticks, and thought “damn.”
oh emlyn told us as soon as the official stream came on we were done
thankfully
I was calling out the abort zones like "no fucking way they're going for it"
Man I wish I had space nerd friends
oh lmao
We are Right Here
i saw the stream got privated or something on the channel
was this the psp watch party 💀
did it? lmao
true (i meant irl)
Depends on which psp team you're thinking of
i looked for it a couple days ago and didnt see it
main psp
the funny thing is joey said we did a great job but they called it a stream test afterwards
Fair but it can't be that hard to find people on the space coast
the entire thing was a clusterfuck on the backend
Going to school for engineering helps me tbf
yeah it is missing
Oh ngl I didn't know there was a main psp viewing group
you'd think, right? but everyone here has lived here their whole life so they couldn't care less
I watched flight 2 from B061, was that the main psp viewing group?
sometimes that kinda stuff crosses the lines
nah it wouldve been in the big arms theatre/lecture hall (i forgor the name)
1010?
emlyn gave us no script whatsoever, and invited us to a discord server voice call 10 min before we were supposed to go live, and like a third of the gopros and one of the two PTZs dropped out beforehand, and perigee's computer had to restart and do windows updates at one point so we switched to my laptop mic
omg you were in B1061 during flight 2, kinda a weird place to be but idk
i think?
wait are you thinking of flight 2 or flight 5?
I also read that lol
next flight shouldn't be utterly fucked, this one wouldn't have been if there was actual time to prepare
i realized it didn't say B1061 right after I finished writing it but decided to send anyway lol
yeah the launch date definitely came out of nowhere, a lot of people didn't believe it was gonna be this early
Yeah I was in B061 for that one
I fs expected it to get delayed
I made such a clown of myself on discord and twitter "It won't launch in October stop believing it'll launch in October please. It. Will. Not. Launch. In. October."
Look how that turned out
yeah same, turns out bullying slash bribery works

Flight 2
oh my god there's three of them
who needs tricore when you can just launch three vehicles simultaneously
wide room moment
oh wait I think im confusing 1 and 2
Oh

Well I was a HS senior for flight 1 lmao
So makes sense why I haven't heard of any psp general viewing events
It's fully insane that flight 1 was only last year
Really feels like its been longer
Wait y'all have scripts?
from losing ~16 engines and flipping into nonexistence to nailing a catch in a year and a half
well, a general outline
we didn't even have that lol
and neither of us have commentated before
we did our best but yeah it was rough
like talking points?
yep
💀
The SpaceX Experience
how much lead time did you have to prep or was it spontaneous
like 4ish days but I flew down to Raleigh the day before flight and didn't really have time to go over stuff with perigee and obv emlyn and the IGW team were remote running around trying to put out fires
You guys did do a great job, it was professional the whole time I felt
yeah I just ramble a lot
I can be professional and give good info I just never stop talking lol
we ended up using the fucking official SpaceX metal booster model as a talking stick midway through
whoever held the booster got to talk
to prevent talking over each other
So uh basically you just described me
☝️
