soft frigate
#

No support from Yuzhmash or Energomash and Northrop is clueless on their own

coarse gate
#

then why is this launch proceeding and that one won't?

soft frigate
#

It was further along

coarse gate
#

two missions being at different phases preparing for flight doesn't mean Northrop knows that they're doing for the first and not the second

#

any technical challenge that comes up during the launch campaign for this flight (and every previous flight) better prepares them for the following flight

#

if you think NG-19 won't fly then why is it listed on the NASA ISS manifest?

soft frigate
coarse gate
#

like what?

soft frigate
#

Don't know. Don't care. Fuck off.

smoky rune
#

but that is far from certain

#

they're very much still trying to go through with it

#

and they've certainly build up some knowledge about how to solve certain issues

nova geyser
#

is the RD-190 or 191 ,whatever the engine on the first stage is, used on anything?

soft frigate
#

Iirc Orbital actually wanted to use one RD-180 instead of two RD-181's, but ULA has an exclusivity deal of some sort with NPO Energomash

nova geyser
#

RD-180 is such a cool engine

#

definitely top 5

number 3 for me

well in terms of honk then yes easily 2nd best

beats the raptor honk but loses to reaver honk

so is MLV not Beta-Castor?

soft frigate

ahhh

#

i see

soft frigate

Antares 330 aka Beta-Castor is a shortened MLV first stage with the S2 of the existing Antares slapped on top

got it, ty

soft frigate

soft frigate
#
  • Planning at least 3 Antares 330 / Beta-Castor launches starting in late 2024
  • Antares 330 is slightly taller but will still fit within existing infrastructure (T/E, HIF) with minimal modification
  • MLV is indeed a temporary name, they have an internal naming contest ongoing. First launch planned in late 2025.
  • After MLV comes online Cygnus flights will switch over to it and Antares 330 will be retired - it's only a temporary solution to get Cygnus flying again from Wallops while Firefly completes MLV development

Both Falcon 9/Dragon and Antares/Cygnus have had major failures and in each case one picked up the slack when the other couldn't

Having two suppliers has proved to be objectively good

crisp mountain
#

oh damn I didn't even notice that

misty surge
#

It looks like the rcs turned it that way before the burn

crisp mountain
#

It did get into nominal orbit so are we sure it isn't just an error in the graphics?

crisp gyro
#

The telemetry also indicated retrograde burn so I'm not sure it was an error in graphics

#

The graphics also moved to prograde smoothly rather than jerking it to that side which likely indicates smooth data and therefore the actual telemetry that was coming down from the vehicle

crisp mountain
#

Ah okay

#

I assume the castor srb has enough margin to make sure it gets into orbit even if something goes wrong like that

#

Guess we'll find out soon

#

Anyways back to sleepie phrogcool

crisp gyro
#

I think that was not wrong but rather what it had calculated it needed to get into the correct orbit

#

The orbital parameters are basically within 5km of the target parameters

Graphical glitch? Intended maneuver? Cygnus made it to orbit after this interesting staging animation during the Antares launch.

@nextspaceflight Perigee actually decreased so I think it was actually firing retrograde to compensate for an overperforming 1st stage

@GewoonLukas_ Yeah, I think this is the most likely theory personally. Pretty crazy if true. Most Kerbal of all rockets.

#

might have been intentional

nova geyser
#

i saw that and I was thinking whether or not this was a graphic glitch

crisp mountain
#

It makes sense considering the 2nd stage is a solid and it has to waste fuel if the first stage overpreforms

hearty crag
#

Nah that's definitely not a graphical glitch

#

It was so smooth and had thruster inputs to turn back around

#

That shit happened lmao

#

Whilst it may have been nominal and required

Does anyone know if they are going to try to unfold the other solar panel now that it's docked? Maybe during a spacewalk that is already scheduled?

red ibex
#

It doesn't make sense, let alone a space bed.

#

I guess if they try to deploy the solar panel, it is with standard procedure, either before or after leaving the ISS, if the spacecraft has to deploy some cargo, maybe they try, if it is just carrying junk, then I guess they won't try anything

potent radish
#

Its only going to be carrying junk. But you wouldn't want it to lose power during undock and end up uncontrolled. Still, 1 panel should be plenty

soft frigate
potent radish
#

You're right. still, I can imagine the Northrop engineers might want to get some info from it so they might do it just for that. Cygnus isn't getting retired anytime soon

ripe island
#

Tbf yeah could be interesting to gather intel

red ibex
#

Yes, that's what they are doing, looking for the root cause, so they will look for the solution and may test it just in a simulator or deploy the panel to verify that the solution does work.

#

Well

potent radish
#

Awesome thanks!

#

So I'm guessing the acoustic blanket is inside the fairing and dampens the deafening sound of launch?

true crag
#

I believe so, but they don’t technically specify

#

Hard to see where else it could be

spark pike
#

It's basically just high tec loft insulation

potent radish
#

Well, that would make sense then. Probably no need to manually inspect the Cygnus itself then. They could probably confirm that by looking at engineering camera footage from inside the fairing

broken ledge

Cygnus can be reused 10 time
