Heya everyone relativly new to warthunder, currently doing the german russian and american lines only to tier 3 with the help of a few golden lions then ill be deciding on what line to grind to tthe end. Current favourite is the russian and german lines with the t34 being a blast. Im a massive Noob and welcome any crit or feedback but im having trouble making the sherman work. Its firepower feels meh compared to the other two lines and it feels paper thin. Im currently on the M4A2 on tier 3 and its just feels the same as all the rest so far, i always try to flank on the second wave so i can counter push if needed, and even if im first to fire quite often the shots will bounce then im dead (using m61 shell). Sorry for the ramble and if this is in the wrong channel, love the game and eager to learn and really want to love the sherman but finding it difficult lol. Peace!!

yeah... well i try too its still something i need to practice and get better at.
with the 75 shermans you definitely want to angle
especially with the M4A2
it improves your chances of bouncing a shot massively
also, try to not expose you sides since theyre pretty damn weak, not as bad as a pz4 but definitely worse than a T-34, the only thing you really need to fear at 4.0/3.7 would be KVs since its pretty hard to pen them at times, especially the KV-85, so you might want to take out like 2 APCR rounds, for the M61 you only really need about 20-25, HE isnt really necessary since youve got a .50 cal and the only other "useful" thing would be smoke shells but you dont exactly need them, so only take out about 25 rounds in total to decrease your chances of getting ammo racked
also, you have a stabilizer which is a massive advantage for peaking corners in close engagements, i personally never flank when using the shermans since its really good at brawling and makes you able to engage multiple enemies at a time, again just try to keep your sides covered because thats your biggest weak spot
for flanking id recommend the chaffee, its a little faster and has better mobility + scouting
other than that just learn weak spots, dont really need it for the pz4, just aim for the flat spots or sides on there and youll be fine, for the T-34 it would also be the sides, turret cheeks and turret ring, for the KVs you can usually pen the UFP depending on the variant, also sides so definitely look at where you can pen it
if youre not sure where you can pen just go for barrels and tracks, always angle and dont rush when making decisions
if youre already fine with playing the T-34 then you shouldnt have too many problem with the sherman :D
Personally, I bring a handful of apcr to deal with the KVs, makes it a little easy to knock out their breach or gunner at range. I bring some HE to splash stuff at range, something sitting behind a corner, or to OP hetzers. If you shoot the machine gun on the top with HE you'll over pressure them.
Apcr might be more of a need now with all the kv1e running around
4.0 US is one of my favorites and is very nice
thanks very much for the advice i will put it all into practice, sounds like i just need to learn the nuances of the vehicle and practice more. Its an iconic tank and i dont want to give up on it before moving on. The T34 feels so much more forgiving when pushing forward due to their armor. Im still not sure what line to fully commit to yet so im just going to take my time and learn to play at 4.0 for a while before moving forward. The sherman definitly sounds like it can be very effective an ive seen other players on the map make it work, so ill stick with it for now, thanks again guys.
they have less than 10mm of roof armour? o.o
you just need a little more experience, nobody was able to play any tank right from the start, itll take a while, about 3 arms, 2 legs and an eye to become really good because warthunder has a 90° learning curve but as long as you sell you whole life to the snail youll be fine :D
- russian bias exists
The shermans are also very tall and the mantlet of the tank can be super trolly if you can turret peak with it
50 cal also very gud 👍
Yes you can peak with that too on light vehicles
Only other advice I'd give is learn where to pen stuff with the protection analysis I see a lot of new players struggle to know where to pen things and that is a very useful tool
yeah
playing some arcade battles at the very start is also not that bad because youll start to memorize where to pen things and not have to worry about spotting things too much
Also don't be afraid to jump into vc's here people are more often happy to help at those lower br's
does the 50 cal start fires ? Im probably making a mistake here but i only use it on aircraft and light vehicles
you can also pen almost any light tank with it, as well as any open-tops. italy's R3 comes to mind as my favorite to 50cal.
also a weird trick for the shermans is to wiggle - if you fire and don't pen, wiggle left and right to avoid a direct hit. i picked this up from OddBawz
the 50 cal has 30mm of pen point blank so you can definitely do some damage with it
Some tanks with low rear armour you can 50 the engine/transmission and this can start a fire
i need to make more use of this, I also need to take more time moving up the map to get into brawl positions as a lot of the time im getting caight out from snipers
Also very useful for shooting the enemies tracks as it can break them pretty quick especially stuff that is normally hard to pen or a casemate so you can get a side shot

average germany L
Just a more specific tip StuH 42/Stug III G, KV-85, T-34 85 and IS 1/2 all have Cupola that you can pen, though for the last four you will need to be quite close to do it reliably. It is something to look out for as you can often shoot these parts while they're trying to play more hull down.
