Squadron Points are based on both the activity of the Squadron you're in, and your own activity score, you can see your activity score if you click on the clan name to the left of your username. Every 2-3 days, you can recieve up to 20,000 SRP (Squadron Research Points) towards the squadron vehicle you've selected for research
Though if you aren't constantly active, you'll receive less points
If you end up leaving a squadron for whatever reason, you won't lose any squadron points you've accumulated on a vehicle so far, but you won't earn anymore until you join a new squad and get your activity points up

You use squadron points to get squadron vehicles like the Leopard, Sea Harrier, Abrams and T-80

Initially yes, but if your activity score is high enough, you can afford to cut back a bit on the number of matches you play
Activity score can also be increased from low tier matches, not just rank III+
