So, my fiance plays USA, most of the time if I'm playing, I squad with him. I like the idea of Germany because of the fun selection of East and West German designs (and not having to fight Bf 109s as much), but I'm told it doesn't really pair up well with USA. (Without doubling up on USA, for variety!)
USSR has tech I like, but I don't like being on their side. I've also been warned away from British vehicles being a pain.
I'd like to have ships available too.
What should I play?

Solid shot just feels less reliable to me. I already aim for weak-spots/crew/ammo, just at my low tiers the solid rounds don't seem to throw that much shrapnel.
Evaporating things with the japanese SPGs has been amusing
I'd say HEAT shells seem to fall in between, performance wise. You tend to get a nice cone of destruction but it can't travel as far, is my experience over about a month of playing

China and France also don't get ships, which is kinda lame, as we like using ships, and being able to level planes for both modes is nice

Solid shot is great, you just gotta gain confidence on where to hit. And france has a lot of autoloaders which is fun.
Japan is good though a bit weak for ground

Japan has some interesting vehicles that are a little more interesting than the German or American vehicles I've seen a billion times from my years in world of tanks.
@amber otter I probably just need access to some punchier solid shots. Mostly I have to fight StuG/StuH frontally with crappy solid shots and they do NOT want to go through the hull near the drivers hatch and, if they do, they don't go far afterwards.
My shermans do quite nicely with the upgraded shot though, no problems with it at that point

I love playing French in Wargame: Red Dragon because you can bring in the AMXes and they don't waste main guns on trucks and transports 😉
I was warned that 'any other pairing' would be better than germany, due to us getting our asses kicked
@amber otter Main reason I don't want Germany is that I don't really want to play every single ww2 german tank I've seen a billion times. Their cold war era stuff is neat and interesting, but I just don't have much of a desire to go through 90 variants of Pz IV and Panther to get there.

I’d say either US or russia. Both are quite fun and have loads of stuff in the TT to use.
Italy if you want to really challenge yourself.

US lends itself to be a little more boring on the way up, due to the four billion shermans, but you get ALL THE BRRRRT at high tier, which is neat.
Russia is a bit... tainted... right now, if you get the meaning lmao.
I did like the very low tier Italian tanks. They had nice post-pen damage. Bonus is I don't know much about them, but I also thought the Italians are also always paired with germany by the MM?

The nation they pick tends to be secondary. Russia more often sure but it goes deeper than that.
Most people are reasonable and don’t bring politics into a video game.

Soviet scientists and engineers made some incredible machines that are really being spat upon by the ongoing thing. As for being TKed, I don't mine. That's a penalty to them, not me. They'll just prove themselves petty.

Well you're making me more interested in Italy. They get the Otomatic, which is perhaps the single coolest modern SPAAG, they have more interesting vehicles that I've never really looked at much .etc
And MBTs that aren't T-72s and M1s 😄

Fair warning their top tier is ass.
Arietes have hull ammo stowage with no blowout, and no armor.
They have no effective SAM SPAA either.
HOWEVER
Below 10.0 Italy is a riot

Kinda depends on what you want to play, for props is Germany but if you want to play jets it’s Ussr, if you want to grind to top tier I would say Ussr if not germany
I don’t think I’d say this ever but France is a very fine tech tree, it does have a larger learning curve. It is a lot fun to play the French planes are great because they’re not a spitfire, p51, or bf109 French planes are something else for better or for worse
One thing I forgot to say is that Germany has one of the hardest rank 6 to play vehicles so trying to get rank 7s is hard as hell
