👉 The wind swings around the compass at unrealistically crazy speeds, ruining bow hunting.
👉 Wind dial is spinning even when there is no visible gust in the area.
👉 Make the environment visuals reflect what's happening on the wind dial.
👉 Stabilise the wind mechanics for longer periods and for a much smoother, more realistic gameplay.

Within 15 minutes of starting a bow hunt the wind has spun around a full 430 degrees and in the time I have typed this it has swung another 180 degrees. From the time I spot the animal to when I take aim, the wind has gone from downwind to upwind. Yet the weather in my environment (NEM in this case) is perfectly still with no trees moving. I should be in the centre of a raging hurricane and tapping my ruby slippers. I've moved around to five locations on the map to see if I can reset the wind mechanics to something a little bit more stable and realistic, but no such luck. It's a frustrating problem in COTW that happens far too often. It's so off putting that I have a couple of dead white-tails stranded on my map that I just can't be asked collecting. I know they are dud shots because I have been caught out each time by the sudden wind change.

As the game evolves, it's understandable that some things that used to function well, may no longer work as well now. With the current map delay, I'm really hoping that the dev team is taking the much needed time to address so many of the quality of life issues that are now affecting basic gameplay. Particularly for those, who are not necessarily grinders, and probably just want a calm, relaxing and enjoyable immersive experience, come rain, wind or sunshine.

Fix the unrealistic Wind Mechanics.

The wind reminds me of a light wind condition. Explanation, 👇

For example:

Light winds tend to be variable winds, meaning they won’t have a dominant direction and will change often. Scent pooling is also highly likely, especially in hilly terrain. Because there isn’t much wind to disperse scent, those thermals will carry the bulk of the scent into one location where it will sit.

High winds tend to move scent very quickly in a direction, but the width of dispersal will be limited.

Moderate breezes provide wide dispersal of scent, and that dispersal will maintain a predictable direction as a moderate wind tends to stay more true with less change and swirl.

Some hunters favor calm and gentle wind conditions when hunting without any kind of scent aid.

Windage and scent behavior are probably among the more closely guarded secrets.. 🤔

I wager it’s difficult to address, just the wind.

It’s an impactful element that belongs to the experience of hunting in this game, however elevation changes, temperature, and precipitation are also important for scent. Perhaps they have incorporated some and we just don’t know.. 🤔

Imagine if temperature was added to the scent behavior.. 😯

For example, Consider hunting dogs.

In bitter cold temps, dogs can locate birds from a shorter distance than they can in more moderate temperatures.

When the air is really cold, scent molecules travel a shorter distance.

Conversely, warm temperatures tend to make for the best scenting conditions for bird dogs, and you can bet a buckeye cervidae (and their more keen predators) can smell better under such conditions as well.

And don’t forget elevation and thermal effect. Ie. That mysterious early morning event you see when fog rolls out from the forest’s edge.

Or that steep enhancement from a damp, heavy air just before a rain or snow conveying scent more readily.

That could be a nifty immersion. 😃

Interesting stuff, @tough knoll and it would be cool to see something this specific implemented. At the moment, in terms of the current gameplay, if you're crouching in one spot and the wind direction is spinning around like a tornado (or is 'following' your target) but there's no visual representation of that, it begins to feel like a programming error.

Great post ... I don't bow hunt much ... But those that do, I can imagine this would be very frustrating when you take the time to get in close only to have the wind change on you. Non bow hunters need to get behind this as well
