I feel there should be more small game animals on all the reserves. Some species for example could be squirrels, skunks, beaver, marten, mink, nutria, meerkat, and also add raccoons to maps other than the one map that already has them.
Also, I know the game is specifically called "The Hunter" but hunting and trapping go hand in hand. I believe traps should be added for the new small game animals and for some of the existing small game animals as well. Some traps being connabear traps(beaver, nutria), foot traps(coyotes, wolves, foxes), snare traps(very wide variety of species, comes in different sizes, add a ramp to place on tree for squirrels, marten, mink, and other climbing animals), box traps(very wide variety of species, comes in different sizes), and dog proof traps(raccoons).
I believe this would be a nice project for the developers to do some research and create beautifully detailed small game animals. I'm sure it is a challenge they would want to take on to perfect their animation skills. I personally would love to see what they could come up with.

An interesting idea as long as it remains within the legal furbearer species of each reserve, for example within Silver Ridge Peak we would have these species..
https://cpw.state.co.us/thingstodo/Pages/SmallGameDatesFees.aspx
Although taking into account the policy of not showing the violence of hunting that CotW has, we would only see the dead animal when we go to pick up the Trap, we would not shoot it..
This hunting/Trapping mode would be good and would serve to "fill" the maps with all the harvestable species since there are some animals that are too small for the game's graphics engine and limits when it comes to adding new animal populations to the existing maps.
If furbearers will remain outside of the population spawn system, how would that work?
Would we set the trap and after X amount of time would we go pick it up to see if there are any animals in it?
Would the animal medal and fur type be random?
@wary quiver I'm glad you like the general idea and have questions about it. I'm not qualified to answered said questions as I'm not a game developer. Thank you!
Ok so when I have time I will place the seasons of furbearers of each reserve according to the region in which they are based on real life and I will explain a little how it could work, I am sure that some players would like to enter every few hours to review their line of traps xD.
Not everyone is a hunter or knows how they normally work it.
Without development these ideas end up at the bottom of the idea jar.
I’d be worrying about the ethicality of traps.
For hunting, all traps are considered unethical...
All traps intended to immobilize animals without causing death are considered animal abuse under current laws...
The trapping season laws in the EU consider as permitted only those traps that cause the instant death of the animal, but the NA laws allow the use of both traps, both immobilization and instant death ONLY during trapping seasons..
If this type of harvesting is added at some point and is applied universally to all maps of the game, it would only be applicable to small fur-bearing animals :S

I had planned to investigate but there are so many legal gray areas in EUR that it is confusing, there is also information in various forums but I can't verify that everything is correct, this could take me time xD
@wary quiver Thanks for the effort you're putting into my idea.
No problem, I will compile all the information I can so it is all in one thread for the future..

When they release a new map, they usually add one unique animal and the others are just reskins. In Australia that was the Kangaroo. Do you really think they will put time and effort to add new animals to old maps for free ?
If we really ask,yes.
If a Trapping Season modality is added, none of these animals will be present on the map and it would not work within the normal animal spawn system, the animals would only appear inside the traps already killed, as they do in real life since many of these small furbearers are not Game Species and therefore cannot be shot with guns during regular hunting seasons...
The Trapping system would serve to collect fur as in real life or trophies as in the game, no movement or AI mechanics or any modification of the maps will be necessary.
If it were added as a DLC there would be no problem since this modality may not interest many players, but it would have enough animals and trophies to justify its purchase..
As I mentioned before, it would be a bit complicated to apply this type of hunting in EUR, since the fur trade and the capture of fur-bearers, as well as the use of Traps for any hunting or capture purpose, are prohibited there.
However, it is still possible to use them as long as a training course has been passed on the use of traps and wildlife capture and traps approved by law are used or that do not go against the animal abuse treaty (which only allows instant death traps) and on animals approved for population reduction or elimination of invasive species...
Within these limitations the number of species allowed (and that could be applied to the game) is currently very limited...

If the EU is complicated, then I wonder how Vurhonga (South Africa) would be
I am not finding information about trapping there, although I am finding information about the northwest, although in all cases it is associated with poaching and brushmeat :S
and coupled with Vurhonga's missions involving the removal of traps set by poachers, I imagine trapping may have to skip over the African Reserves
Yeah, I think it will be like that, there are no laws or permissions beyond the privileges of some tribes
Te Awaroa / New Zealand
As we have already seen in a mission within the Reserve, there are already a couple of traps placed and these are only used to capture/eliminate invasive species, there are even many groups and instructions that teach the management of these traps.
The use of traps to capture game animals is prohibited, so this is the list of species allowed to capture with the Trapping modality.

Parque Fernando - Patagonia/South Argentina
In Argentina the use of traps to capture game animals is prohibited.
However, as in Te Awaroa/New Zealand, the use of traps to eradicate invasive species is permitted, although the list of these is very small.
The permission to use these traps arises because they do not represent a danger to the native fauna since, being species with amphibian habits, they are placed on the banks of bodies of water in areas with a clear presence of these species.
-Beaver (Castor canadensis)
-Vison (Neovison vison)
-Muskrat (Ondatra
zibelthicus)
I do not have links to resources that are in English since all regulations are issued through National Laws written in Spanish and there is no clear policy for the management of invasive species. Basically they are declared invasive (breeding, transportation, purchase is prohibited) but there are no elimination programs other than those promoted by some non-profit organizations or private land owners.
Even so, I leave you the link of the hunting season and species in the Patagonia area that is also useful to see some species that can be added by backfilling xD

I put "Neovison" into google and the American Mink came up, can't say that is all surprising that they got imported all over the world
Yeah, during the fur trade boom of the 19th century, mink and various fur-bearing species were introduced in every possible place around the world with the aim of exploiting them as a resource, as there were no regulations, veterinary or nutritional studies for breeding farms, hey were simply released into the wild to reproduce on their own :S
And in the absence of natural predators or any control after the fall of trade they spread without control.

Rancho del Arroyo - Sonora / Mexico
Basically in Sonora there are no trapping seasons or furbearing species (since it is a semi-desert climate) other than Coyotes, Foxes and Lynxes, however since there are no regulations I will just ignore this reserve as with Vurhonga :/
Revontuli Coast / Finland
It was quite difficult for me to find information about Trapping in Finland, if it is incorrect, correct me since even the translators work poorly with the Finnish language.
As mentioned above, traps are prohibited in EUR but only traps that, when activated, cause the immediate death of the animal may be used. They must also be placed within the protection structure so that other non-target animals activate them..
HOWEVER, large traps wide enough can be used to capture the animals alive and prevent them from getting hurt... although one finishes them off later with a rifle :/

Well those are all the reserves, the most interesting are those where there are furbearers, species that are not included as Game Species and there is no suitable caliber nor is it allowed to shoot them with firearms, I think implementing a trapping mechanic only for those species would be very interesting since trapping would be the only way to obtain them..
As for the mechanics, I would be inclined because it was like it is in real life:
1_Go to the appropriate map area
In the same way that animals have their habitat areas, fur bearers will have theirs where they will be trapped.
**2_Place the trap **
Execute an animation to activate the activation mechanism is at the discretion of the developers
**3_Wait an X amount of time **
Here it would be great to use a counter system that the old online fishing games used where nets were placed where the net filled gradually over time, 10% every hour until it reached 10hs when it was completely filled xD
All trapping regulations advise/oblige to check the traps every 36 hours, which translated into playing time is 9 hours, so...
Once the trap has been placed and after 1 hour there would be a 10% chance that an animal has fallen, at 2 hours there is a 20% chance, at 3 hours there is a 30% chance and so on until 9 hours are over where there is a 100% chance that the animal falls into the trap
4_Harvest the trap
The animal would already be dead inside ready to pick up.
It seems somewhat boring at first glance, but it is a different type of harvesting/hunting, one where unique animals that cannot be obtained in any other way are caught, a different way to obtain trophies only linked to luck.
I think it would be really interesting to go through a line of traps while hunting the animals that one finds along the way, not only would it encourage organic hunting a little but it would help the game to maintain a regularity of players giving them a reason to enter the game every so often.
I'm sure it wouldn't take long for the apps to add a timer to keep track of the time elapsed in each trap, so that control would be kept outside the game xD
This is all the information and details I can provide, it depends on the community if they like this modality or not.
👀
All trapping animals will not spawn within the map, they will only appear when the trap captures them, therefore no movement animations or modification of the animal populations that each map currently has will be needed.
They would only need the variations of fur and poses to be displayed taxidermied in the trophy lodge.
I also count upland birds as small game animals so it would also be cool to see more American grouse species and the possibility to see birds like partridge and woodcock added along with them
I really like this idea ive wanted traps for so lond
