This just further proves that the journalist dude was grabbing at fricken straws. That central area, especially center left, seems to be more boreal forest in nature. North is evidently higher elevation, most likely the more mountainous region. The grasslands are most likely that brighter lower right area and the further north it goes it is more sporadic.

Journalist dude said you spawn in the boreal forest in the north and the foothills are in the south. As for grasslands he described them in a way that was more akin to sparse shooting lanes (think those of Emerald Coast)
