Yeah my poor girl had to stay overnight cause they were struggling to get her temp up so I got her back “sober”, I splurged a bit on food (homemade with mutton, beef, and salmon and a lot of different fruits and veggies and white rice tho the protein makes up the bulk of it ) cause she also got her teeth cleaned at the same time so softer food is easier atm

Still loves blankets though so I snuggle her up anyway

I tried canned food when ranger was little but he had a habit of leaving it in the bowl (they both are pretty much grazers only eating little bites over the course of hours) so it wouldn’t be any good by the time he would want to eat it

I believe she weighs somewhere from 5-8 pounds at the moment, we think she's around 7 months old. And I think Joey's typically drink milk for around 18 months. However, after some research it does mention that they aren't entirely dependent on milk once this they hit the one year mark

With Dairy cows usually you're supposed to milk, the mama immediately to get the colostrum so you can then bottle feed it to the calf. Just because dairy cows like to trample their calves and be mean to them.

I grew up on the Dairy that my family owns, I don't know how many calves I saw get stepped over by their mom

Yeah nah.. We never hutched our calves. If enough moms dropped at once we basically closed off half of one run of stalls and made plank fencing and gave the calves their own little pen.
Sometimes if Mom was a superproducer we would walk baby to and from her for the first few days before milking her out into a canister and freezing the excess for emergency babies
but for the most part, if we could we let them nurse off for the goods

and after that we would just milk them into the line that ran across the ceiling into the bulk tank

Our last one - Marshmallow - he was literally such an angel.

When he hit two they gave him his nose-ring (I was away at school and was visiting every long weekend/vacation that I could but my mom lived 2 hours from my grandad)
Everyone needed to use the softlead on his ring, I would show up and just cup under his chin and gently put pressure and he'd just walk with me and grumble the entire time

Back in 2017 I think, we had a calf born and yk how sometimes they refuse to walk on their hooves and walk on their "ankles"? She wouldn't stop doing that. But she was also tiny. So we named her stubby and she was my calf. I fed her and took care of her, I loved her lol

I think we stopped the breeding after a series of bad times
One of our cows mummified her calf at the end of gestation.. so effectively she carried around it's little body for forever. Surgery was not an option for whatever reason - so she became the yard pet.

That same year we sent some cattle to a guys property to help him maintain his field (eating it down) and one died to what we think was coyotes. He left her in the field cos she wouldnt come in one night (she was stubborn) and it was summer so he was like "eh whats the harm" 🙄
One collapsed in the field and died "randomly" (we autopsied her at our farm and saw nothing wrong.. til we cleared her stomachs and found them full of twine and bale wrapping.) Dude was NOT picking up the twine and plastic off the round bales - just was cutting them and leaving them
Lost a series of calves that we AI'd with like.. 75-125$ tubes (which then was the expensive price range, idk what they run now for good bulls)
One calf was aborted by mom - malformed with a shoulder-leg on top of the 4 normals

I think that was the beginning of the end
They ran into some issues and effectively sold out the herd to pay down the debts. Sucked, a lot.
I mean rationally I understand.
But 13yo me was furious.

My great grandpa and great grandma started it in one area and then my grandma and grandpa continued it across town on another farm
