Last April versus today, if yall ever buy a horse, don't buy sight unseen. Learned my lesson. (spoiler alert she was malnourished when we first got her lmfaoo)

Yupp we got them when they were supposedly two, but turns out they weren't turning two for another few months. They had them working at just a year old which i know many people do but I'm personally not for. They're currently only doing halter training and we'll move onto some harder work in the spring

Yeah all you should be doing with yearlings is groundwork. I’d never ride a horse younger than 3 (omitting racehorses), I know a lot of people that start at 2 though

I think 2.5 they can begin learning how to wear a saddle, and stirrups, etc

But no weight in them imo until minimum 3

Like just more foundational things.
Saddle, stirrups, how to stand at a mounting block,learning how to wear bridle - bitless or not, feeling a sack/ tarp and learning that is not scary if it moves - basic desensitization stuff

Yeah that’s what you’d do during the 2 year old year. Personally I wouldn’t go bitless on a young horse until they learn the basic buttons under saddle

I just can't with bits anymore. Saw a guy basically saw into a horses tongue with the bit so much so that it needed a vet to patch it up
Idk what kind of hell contraption he had, but between him yanking back and forthhis tongue was mangled

Yeah some people are awful. The studies I’ve read show bits being kinder than bitless on a horse’s facial tissues. Some people just never learned how to ride or train a horse though

I guess, for me, the idea of horse with stellar foundation/groundwork would do bitless like gentle parenting
I know they aren't human, and are horses so equating it as such probably wont work for most people
And I do recognize some cases just cannot because they will not respond etc.
Just like, I prefer shoeless but accept that some horses and even still some breeds require a shoe (protection etc for those xl drafts)
