Well i think it should count because for example i shot 5000 Moose on medved and i changed map and started grinding on Revontuli and spawned it there after only 30 kills you just needed to kill 30 more moose for it to spawn. The kill count is just a thing so you can see how many animals you needed to shoot for it to spawn

every kill is an independent chance to spawn a tree anyway, the count is just a fun way to track how long before you spawned one

Imma go with the toss up of it depends on if HM actually applies to increasing G1 chance or not (which I currently have no opinion of). If HM affects it, kill count would be more directly accurate per map because of the weight ratio aspect that has been managed. If HM doesn't affect it, kill count is irrelevant per map and more accurate overall because its pure random chance.

Knowing where all your zones are at will only help you. While you could attempt with less, if they bounce out or respawn elsewhere it'll be harder to find them mid grind
