No there are two main constructions of lug nuts, solid steel. And then steel core with a chrome cap.

With temperature change over time the caps expand and contract at a different rate than the core they are adhered to, so they split. So to take a split one off you gotta peel back the cap piece by piece to get to the core which is almost always a smaller size than what would be nice for the lug nut.

The only advantage they have is that they are cheaper. But you’ll probably replace capped ones as often as the price difference anyways.

I think I've only ever had one vehicle that had capped lug nuts but it was fine from what I recall

Yeah they are really only a problem for vehicles that are outside a lot in an area where temps fluctuate a lot, and we have dogs so their urine speeds up the rusting process.

A capped one is also more likely to strip, sometimes they can even break free from the core and spin freely so you have to take a center punch and poke a hole through the center and peel it back from the center like a cursed orange.

It’s usually not that bad if you dealt with one before and you have the right tools. A spline socket comes in handy for breaking free a rusted lug nut. You can hammer a size down on usually going from imp to metric or metric to imp and the shape of the shoulders will cut into the lug nut giving it better grip.
