You follow the dog, at lower tracking levels it’s really slow but just follow it and it’ll take you to the harvest

Geese hunting I heard is easy cash

About duck hunting: I sometimes stand in the waterfowl cover with 20 decoys and lure for 20 minutes and there is not a single duck coming to me. When hunting geese, they come in 1 or 2 minutes. Anyone knows how to get effective at mallard hunting? Are other ducks like this? Is just glassing bodies of water one by one with no decoys more effective?

The best teacher for ducks is what you are doing now. They work much differently than geese. Will xplain in a bit. In car lol

Okay. I'll first say that all of my observations here are from simple experience and deduction and not because I know how the game is programmed. Geese and ducks work much differently. In fact, Geese work differently than any other animal in the game. When you put down goose decoys, the game will basically start spawning geese and throwing them at you. It's like a goose conveyor belt almost.

Ducks work like all the other animals on a map (except geese). Just like on any given map, you may have, say 75 white tails on Layton - all in different herds, moving between need zones. There is a population of ducks on your map too, and they also move between need zones during the day, from lake to lake. You can often see them flying if you look up. This is why duck decoys work differently and why the goose decoys can deceive you into thinking otherwise. If instead of duck decoys, you had white tail deer decoys, and you stuck them in a field and waited, you might be waiting a long time, because unless some white tails come along who can SEE your decoys and be attracted to them, they do diddly. Similarly, for your duck decoys, if all the ducks are in their need zones for 3 hours, you won't get any ducks landing, because there are no ducks flying overhead to notice them and possibly land there.

There isn't one best one... there's a list of the lakes they can be found it and it varies map to map. So unfortunately, you just have to figure out which lakes are best on your map.

Also, if your best herds are in bad spots, you can try killing a bunch to delete that zone and hope they pick a better one next time 😄

No, they'll come back eventually... though you may just want to put down a tent and reset the time, the ATV scares them off pretty far

Gotcha! Whenever you kill an animal, you put down hunting pressure (HP), you see it on the map as a purple circle. Guns make the most hunting pressure, bows much less and you can reduce your hunting pressure by hunting from a stand, tripod, or blind. If you apply too much HP in a single spot, zones will be deleted and those animals will move somewhere else. For guns not in a stand/blind, you can shoot 3 safely, any more than that will delete a zone if it's within the HP.

So if you use a bow from a stand or blind, you really can't delete the zone, but it's easy to if you're using a gun without a stand

Every time you shoot something/apply hunting pressure, it reduces the hunting pressure everywhere else on the map. So when you see that purple on the map go away, all of the hunting pressure is gone from that spot

Yeah, you'll get a feel for when it's too much over time. If it's faint purple/grey, that means there's very light hunting pressure, you can apply more, but how much depends on how much is there and what you're hunting with

I'd just keep an eye on the map when when it starts getting pretty bright, stop. You can also test it out on some herd animals you aren't as concerned about.

@proper hawk all stands, tripods, blinds, etc. apply the same amount of pressure, regardless. For the least amount of pressure per kill, hunt with a bow from one of them.

Make sure the caliber you use is right for the classes you’re hunting

243 is good for classes 2-6

So basically you can get coyotes blacktail and whitetail with full integrity with it

But that’s only the animals on Layton

You have to put decoys down.

Decoys can only be put in a corn or strawfield, and like duck decoys, 20 is max effectiveness.

If you create hunting pressure from a bow while using any hunting stand or blind, you can effectively reduce HP on a map so that there isn’t even any pink on it at all.

well if it's not on the map, sometimes that's only because there are overlapping need zones and it might still be there but the game "shows" you only the most recent one you discovered.

Another thing to know is that the glowy footprints do not appear for you until the opening time of the need zone. So if it starts at 8:00 and you show up at 7:59 you won't see any. More importantly, they usually don't appear for you unless you leave and come back (unfortunately)

the last thing I'd say is that the marker on the map shows you roughly where the footprints for the need zones will be each day. Every day the animals might actually use a spot which is within 100m or so of that spot. It won't be identical most of the time. When I'm camping a drinking zone and I'm not sure precisely where they will be, I will try to show up at 1 minute after the need zone starts (still earlier than animals) so that the tracks will show for me and I'll know exactly what their destination is that day

i started a new game. why are there hardly any animals on my maps (max. 6) in the drinking zones and in multiplayer (joined not hosted) there are often more than 20 of the same species.

your population can vary wildly from someone else's

sometimes you may have animals distributed pretty evenly, sometimes you may have a few hotspots and other dry spots, and sometimes the entire map is dead except for one area which is absolutely LOADED

you can influence that by killing off the animals in the areas with high concentrations so the respawns might spread out a bit

also, i CANNOT overemphasize the importance of map coverage

Hello. I'm trying to work out whether to report a Hirschfelden bug - I can't see it on the official list but I'm not sure whether it's a bug. Basically, when you're high on the hills in that reserve, the geese can fly over you only a little higher up - well within range - but the shotguns don't take them down. In fact, they don't even seem to notice you're shooting. On Layton, for example, you can knock the ducks down as they fly over quite straightforwardly and quite high up, but the geese just seem to fly on in their "V" shape. I've tried this a couple of times and emptied about 30 rounds at them now without hitting a thing. I'm certain it's not my shooting. Anyone else seen this?

for any picture mission you need to have a decent zoomed in shot with the animal mostly filling the frame. 40 yds should be enough I would think. This is my second playthrough. I've done tons of missions but Mr. Black can shove it, I let him sit there this time

Red deer image is the new one

Animal score is a fixed thing as of Scoring 2.0, and consecutive harvest and QK now are just for bonus $ and XP

the checks are the four Harvest Check requirements, which are:
-using the right weapon
-shooting the animal no more than twice
-not damaging the trophy organ
-hitting a vital organ

failing any of those will penalize you by one medal rank.
