I have a theory that the range is the same as when you highlight an animal with the binocs. I think that is the only way the game can identify the animal

But a counter to that is the binocs can highlight at greater ranges than what the camera missions confirm for certain missions

There is no particular setting. If you mean long distance via scopes, you start out with the Hyperion and will eventually unlock the better scopes the more you play and level your player

If you click on it in the store and click on compatible items and click on the bullets it lists, it will give you the class range so any animals that falls within those classes can be killed with that gun and receive all check marks

Idk how expensive the 45-70 is, but imo go for the one you can afford so you have a gun to kill Class 9 for the moment. Then save for the .300 if you have the gun (I think it comes with Yukon), if not the .338, those two are the best guns for classes 7-9. I pref the .300 because the .338 is single shot, but if you don't have the .300 the .338 is good as well.

You can also forego both and save for the .300 (or .338) directly. I started with the 7MM, but I wish I would've gone directly for the 300

if you zero for 300m, your bullet will hit exactly where you aimed at 300m. anything closer, and it will hit higher than where you aimed

y, it changes where the center of your crosshair is. If you aim at something 300m away, but your zero is set to 150, you have to compensate by aiming higher. If you set your zero to 300, you can aim with the center and hit it. Combine that with rangefinder binocs so you can see how far away the animal is, and you're good to go

Told you. Remember though, it is only for classes 7-9. If you kill animals below that, you don't pass the harvest check and lose XP and money. The King 470DB is more powerful for example, but it can only kill class 9 and is only good at low ranges. 100m is possible but it is best at 50 and below, so I don't recommend it early on.
