It’s accuracy and range are nice. I take wt out at 330m and can pick thru 4 of them before they start running

Anything class 4-6 with the m1 drops fast with a well placed shot. The .270 is underpowered but irl it’s not that great of a gun anyways so I think the game represents it well.

.270 for moose sucks all day long. Doesn’t matter what ammo type you got. Use .270 poly on deer and take lung shots. Will drop them easy at 150m or less. U can use soft point in .270 but I find u want to be closer for them to be more effective

Maps usually have some open spaces where you can pull it off. Hirsch has the fields, Layton has the big river thingy etc. You have to find them at their need zones and shoot them from the appropriate distance.

this one has the max weight for all animal types on each reserve. if the weight estimate caps out at the max weight, it is a possible diamond, but not a probable diamond. if you want to investigate farther, max level animals are highly likely (never always, plenty of troll animals exist) to be diamonds

i will say tho that weight estimate is not a reliable indicator of a diamond, since animals can hit max weight estimate at one or two levels below max depending on the animal. trophy rating and animal difficulty are much more reliable.

to get a diamond, you must find an animal with a trophy rating over the diamond threshold, and pass the harvest check.

passing the harvest check is straightforward. to pass it, you must pass four criteria:

Shoot the animal with appropriate ammo (for instance, using .338 on a blacktail would fail this check)
Hit at least one vital organ (the liver, both lungs, heart, neck, and brain all count as vitals)
Do not damage the trophy organ (which, in nearly all cases, is the skull)
Shoot the animal no more than twice

failing any of those checks drops the trophy one level (i.e. a gold becomes a silver)

So last night I spooked a lvl. 5 reindeer out of his drink zone in Medved and he ran across a lake and stopped on the other side after about 500 yds. I followed him across and tried to call him after he calmed down but he never came out. I was even able to spot another smaller reindeer that was eating with him in the same zone and it said it added the new zone to my map but when I went back to look it never did. After all this happened he seemed to just completely disappear from the area and I couldn't even get a track on him. This was really weird b/c I never saw him spook after he stopped to eat and I was looking in his direction the whole time. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could go back and find him now or should I just give up hope on finding him again. I don't even know which zones to look at and I cant ever seem to get anything over a lvl. 3 reindeer to come to my calls even when they're calm. Thanks!

Weapon Pack 2, tents and the ATV

#

The weapon pack grants you weapons suited for most of the animals on the base maps (for free iirc ingame), while the tents allow you to make your own "spawn points" while the ATV helps travel between outposts and lookout points

Other than that the manor is a pretty big "must"

The 7mm is a great gun with good accuracy and a large range of classes 4-9, but Magazine size is only 1. You may go for the 338 or 300 if you own the M1 already.

@last hemlock hunt the river system early morning and mid day/early afternoon take it easy and scout out some herds. Takes a bit of time but it is a hunting game so you have to have some level of patience

Hi,
Question about need zones. Sometimes you find a need zone for a species (say moose), then you come back at the same place out of the need zone times and you discover a need zone for another species (say Bear). On the map, the old need zone will be overwriten by the new one. Does that means that the moose will stop comming at the times of the old need zone ? Or if you come back at the times of the old need zone you will find moose and so (re)discover the previous need zone ?

It's very useful. The bullet drop can be very punishing in this game. You should use it unless you prefer the added challenge.

Id say if you have expierence in some more or less realistic FPS games you should be fine getting adjusted to the bulletdrop. Because you have to make sure you zero in before every single shot you take, that can get a little bit annoying. But in general it doesnt really matter. Either you get used to the bulletdrop or you get used to the constant zeroing :D

If you haven't completed the Baden line just yet (You get the last quest for it after the main story), you should wait until you reach to the point with Don Miguel's line where you have to harvest a random diamond animal. You can use the diamond you get for the last Baden mission to finish it.

Just purchased the game on Steam sale and been enjoying it a lot. Currently sitting at 7k rifle score after a week of playing. But could someone briefly explain the trophy rating / medals system? Is it dependent on the animal size or "quality" (antlers etc) and how much do the shots matter?

I've watched youtubers who just know some animal is a diamond one before shooting, so is it based on the difficulty level and size? I'm just shooting anything that moves and really can't tell the difference between high / low trophy animals 🙈

The medal is dependent on the animals’ trophy rating, which in turn is dependent on its trophy organ. For antlered species like deer and horned species like buffalo, a bigger rack or set of horns equals a higher trophy rating. For non-antlered species like felines, heavier animals will have a higher trophy rating. In general tho, heavier animals tend to have higher trophy ratings (tho there are exceptions, like blacktails with pitifully small racks)

To get the highest possible medal on an animal, you must pass the harvest check, which consists of four checks:

Use proper ammo type (I.e. you cannot use .338 on a whitetail)
Hit at least one vital organ (the vitals are the brain, neck spinal cord, heart, lungs, and liver)
Do not damage the trophy organ (which is almost universally the skull)
Shoot the animal no more than twice
(Note: checks 2 and 3 are automatically passed on class 1 animals)

Failing any of these four checks drops the medal by one. I.e. a gold will become a silver

A diamond is the highest trophy in the game, comprising around 1% of animals. They are among the most sought after for that reason

There is a way you can estimate the medal tho. Max level animals are probable diamonds (I say probable because troll diamonds exist), one or two below max, depending on species, is usually a gold, two to four below max, depending on species, is usually silver, and females of antlered species have no trophy because they don’t have antlers

Pretty much. Most experienced players recommend going for a lungshot because the lung is a vital and is also a big target. And hitting ANY vital organ guarantees that the animal will die

#

The lung and liver together make up roughly half the length of the animal’s torso, so aiming for the chest is a pretty safe bet

Hey my savanna map is totally busted :? Anyone got any tips or had the same issue?

In my map all my need zones are gone and all the animals are gone. There’s no tracks, no calls, no nothing. It’s been like this since the springbok mission to spot 2 of apposing sex and I have no idea how to fix it.

how does this "great one" thing works? I thought there was kind of a higher level than diamond, at X trophy score, but I'm seeing its score it's the same as diamond? so it's only like a "parallel", special category of sort?

The trophy score depends on the rack of the GO, the old GO rack had like 640+ rating, while the current one is 340+ something. They are not really a higher medal in the traditional sense since if you mess up a GO you get a Gold, not a Diamond, so it's more like a very rare (and in the case of the WT) atypical diamond spawn and the animal weights more than the normal max weight of the species. That's my understanding on the matter.

they might patch it one day but the mission was put into the game at release. hirch is one of the first maps but the dlc bows didn't exist when that mission was coded

I found with the photo missions ( especially on Cuatro ) that I just chased a herd and eventually they'd stop for a rest, sometimes you'd get lucky and one would get bugged on a rock.. Then snap snap snap. I did pretty much all the animal photo missions like that and found it quicker and less annoying. Just chase them down. No need to hide in a bush for ages. lol

Yeah, I wish the bows were like classic and you didn't have to pick the right weight one. Maybe if it was just different types of arrows ( to suit the bow ), but without the weight difference.

Does the tent bug still exist, that if u fast travel to a tent near the animals they will be invisible? Or does a tent just make loud sounds and that alerts the animals? Because for some reason if i fast travel to my tents there are no animals, even at the need zones at the right time (i placed the tents right on the lakes on medved so they are about 50-100 m away from the need zonees).

I once fast traveled to my tent and there was a fox near the entrance. The fox was not stuck or anything. Now I am unsure if the tent spooks animals at all. I also got killed by a buffalo once and spawned inside my nearby tent and it attacked me again. The buffalo didn't rip my tent in half and I was safe standing in the center of the tent and able to kill the animal as it kept running circles around my tent.

EDIT : It happened again, I fast traveled to my tent and checked my inventory then I heard footstep sounds, I shot one Lesser Kudu from the tent and a minute later a second one showed up. The Kudus came very close so I took some screenies.

Chaps, I own ALL the DLC... yet some of it is showing in steam as not installed.... so when I try to click download to install the ones that apparently arent....instead of downloading them it launches the game.....

add to that the new reserve Te Awaroa which i havent even played yet as it crashes when I try to load it (which i bought on day of purchase) all in all means i prob wont be buying anything ever again for COTW quite honestly.

I don't think you need to download dlc separately. Buying them will just unlock them in game. Try to verify integrity of game files. That could help with the crashing.

looks to be multiplayer problem (wow how shocking)

I managed to fix this temporarily by creating a multiplayer game, travelling to each region, and then going single player but once I went to someone else's session all the maps broke again

You can hunt for geese using a tripod and the caller, which is free if I'm not mistaken. It's less efficient without the decoys but you still should be able to make some of the flocks break and come in.

The question is which one is better for diamond hunting. To trade off the power of the 7 mm for the extra follow up shot of the Mosin does not make sense. If someone really wants the extra follow up shot they should choose another weapon.

I've never used the .470 outside missions. I think the .300 is a much better choice, it can take down anything, it's ethical for a wider range of classes, it's 1 kg lighter, and you can put scope on it.

It's alright. The bullet drop can be bad, and the 16G buckshot is a bit underpowered if you ask me. But if you have the pack already, it's free. Try it for yourself.

What @dark mango said. Skip the 270 (although I think you should have a free one, the Stradivarius, I don't quite remember how I got it) and go for the 7mm.

Gonna be hard to do an instant drop on a moose with either of those. They're pretty hardy. Better off to grind until you can get the 7 mm or another more powerful rifle

the spine doesn't count as a vital organ and you'll lose a medal if that's the only place you hit it. if you really have to use a rifle and you don't have access to the higher class ones, use the 270 with poly tips and aim for the lungs behind the shoulder blade

I think all weapons are sighted into the middle range, but if you get the zero perk you can adjust to short and long range as well

@sudden anchor you can have a level 5 moose that is not a diamond if its a troll. It will just be really close.

@sudden anchor you have to put points into the zero perk and then since its an active perk you have to have it selected. not sure about what buttons you would press on a controller to switch distances though

If it's a zone of a lonely male, I wouldn't bother waiting. For me the respawn is more valuable than the zone. If nothing else spawn there you gain nothing by keeping it around.

There is no guarantee for that. The respawn is random for the most part. You might get one extra animal on that zone after x amount of kills, but you might never get anything. The chance to get there something extra consistently is slim. While a killed animal is always a potential for something good to respawn somewhere. It might respawn to the same place.

Every animal you kill will respawn and will have a need zone somewhere on the map. It might be at the same place, it might be at a completely different place. Males respawn as males, females respawn as females. Animals are persistent on your map, so you won't get any respawns out of them unless you shoot them and claim them. This is why I don't think it's worth keeping them around, the more male animal you kill (or female in a case of a few species like hares or gemsbok where females can make diamonds) the better your chances are to get some rare or diamond animal.

Doesn't matter. Even if it dies but you don't claim it, it should respawn as the exact same animal it was.
