Always shoot both fox when you find a pair, if possible! Duo "herds" won't respawn until both animals are killed, so unlike animals with 3-8+ herd sizes, you don't need to leave any alive.

The Ranger .243 is lethal out to render range on class 2-6, just learn to make reliable lung shots while avoiding bone!

You should, in my opinion, focus on better scopes before getting better rifles.

While the Ranger is effective, it's not ideal and other calibers will outperform it against class 4+ game, notably the .257 and .270.

I don't personally mess with high power rifles for class 2-7 game, and typically only hunt with either the Ranger, Crossbow, or .45 Cyclone for classes 2-8, and the 45-70 handgun for classes 4-9. So I can't tell you much about a rifle based on the DLC it comes from.

The 45-70 handgun can take moose at 300m. It's a phenomenal little handgun and lightweight. As for bows, the Crossbow in particular is accurate out to 150m (175 with the right scope setup), and can handle all classes easily.

Do keep in mind both weapons are single shot only, so rapid follow-ups are out of the question. They're marksman choices for their respective classes. If you tend to go for follow-ups or double-taps, a Compound Bow instead of the Crossbow is ideal, and a revolver would be a better fit over the 45-70

The .300 is a large game caliber focused around flat trajectories at extreme range, but doesn't have the power of something like the .375.

If you're not routinely taking shots further than 300m, the .375 is a better weapon.

At 300-400m, the .300 rifles shine due to flat shots.

I like Haphaestus, it's a nice in-between of the 60 and 70lb bows, but the Bearclaw has a built in stabilizer that reduces sway when aiming, which would likely be preferred for taking on wolves at close range.

It's really good for close/mid range shooting. I don't subscribe to the idea that any rifle is the best overall, but the .375 is hard to beat when you're shooting within it's effective range.

great, so the .300 ill switch to .375, keep the 308 for wolves, deer, and then the 45-70 for moose or big stuff, and then the bow for the gray wolves quick reload

So that mission is particularly painful. The best thing I can recommend is to run around Cheelah until you spook one, and then follow it, and try to find its need zones. Once you do, reset time to an hour before you found it, creep within 200m of it's need zone and use a caller to bring it in.

The 45-70 can also equip rifle scopes, unlike many handguns, so you can comfortably take long shots with a 16x scope if you want to. It zeroes up to 200m as well.

There are some you'll find on occasion that aren't diamond, but have something special that makes them worth keeping. Usually this is fur type, such as a Dilute, Albino etc, or sometimes it's just a particularly nice rack.

If it's a diamond it'll have good trophy rating. That's what makes it a diamond. They're so rare that it's worth collecting even the ugliest dime, until you eventually (if ever) end up inundated with them.

hello i have watched the 4th video about herd managment and i might be mentally challenged because i still dont quite understand it. More like i dont know how i can prevent animals from spawning solo.

They can drink at the same spot, but the herds themselves don't merge. The only way to tell which one is a solo is to just know which one it is from their zone, tracks, etc. I've not done red deer yet so I'm not overly familiar with their behavior

I'd say Askiy Ridge is a must buy reserve, for new and old players. Other good reserves would be Emerald Coast, Vurhonga Savanna (I still recommend them, even though I despise them) and then one really incredible map I love to recommend is Sundarpatan Nepal.

And for the dogs it's really up to you. If you hunt small game, get the pointer/retriever. If you struggle tracking animals, get the Bloodhound.

hey folks... i asked on reddit and now asking here. i'm a new player, have all the maps... i had the idea of going to each map and doing the first 5min intro thing where you go to the first outpost and lookout tower, just to kind of window shop (not going to do those maps yet, just kinda peeking.)

but then it occured to me, those initial tutorial outposts/lookout towers on each map reward XP and cash, and added up, it is a non-insignifigant amount of either for my low level (level 6). but i have a hard time knowing if this is going to "ruin" me, as im going slow and enjoying learning organically, and not a grinder-type. i noticed from three maps i went to, i think i got $8000, which again, is a lot for me. should i not do this "window shopping"?

i think most ppl would tell you to stick with the .243 and work unlocking the .243 polymer tip ammo. a .22 doesnt come with the base game but is nice to have for small animals (class 1-2) so there's a couple DLCs you can get on sale right now that would provide that. otherwise, i think starting with the shotgun for small animals is the other route

The ranger. 243 gets a lot of smack talk for no good reason, stick with it and practice making good lung shots. Even at render distance it will put class 5 animals down every time, with the free ammo, if you're patient and take careful shots.

As for the rest of your loadout, a Bow can cover close to mid range engagements on class 1-9 animals, but it's tricky to learn. Start using one as soon as you can, though, because they are incredibly powerful and versatile once you master them. The earlier the better.

As for consumables, lures, etc, binoculars are great for spotting animals, and the scent eliminator is a big help and worth keeping on your loadout.

Everything else is basically situational.

Hirschfelden has a shooting range at the southeastern end of the map, as well. It's worth practicing shots there, and ammo is infinite.

It's a class 3 and only one spawns at a time. Everything else is basically speculation. Some say you need to complete the mission for it to start spawning, others say they've seen it without doing so.

It's an insignificant amount in the long run, don't worry. It seems like a lot at the start of the game, but setting up ONE map for a herd management grind can cost nearly half a million.

heh, yeah... i just noticed it was racking up, and doing my "tour" would probably pay for some of the first big upgrades, like better binoculars (12k) or go towards getting a 7mm rifle (36k), and that felt kinda bad. i guess i can just hold off till i've "earned" it (ive already turned off most the other dlc i got, so i have stuff to work towards)

None of those will be game breakers. The 7mm is a great upgrade for big game hunting but is quickly overshadowed by other, more specialized rifles later on, and the vast majority of your money will end up going into tents and hunting strucutures anyhow.

The game isn't really "balanced" around weapons and gear giving you a notable advantage in a linear sense, anyhow. Yeah the 7mm can drop whitetail better than the .243, but it can't ethically take class 2-3 animals as a tradeoff, etc.

I've also got all maps and have done all the intro stuff, it barely makes a dent in the long run. You're all good!

Just bought me the map today as I felt like doing some snowy grinds and wanted something fresh.
Spawned in a pack of wolves at the very beginning and seem to not get out them without a bunch of own deaths and kills. Each respawn they are still there.
Are they always in packs and honest on the hardest lvl to shoot down?

Typically no, but if you kill all but 1 in a flock it doesn't respawn until you get the last one. Respawns seem to be faster when you cull entire flocks though.

Going to menu and/or restarting game will remove the body and just respawn the animal so don't do that!

If you haven't already, drop a waypoint in the center of the hunting pressure that appeared when you shot it. That is where the blood splatter should be from your shot and you should be able to follow it from there

Those accuracy stats actually aren't that important! The key thing you need to know for accurate rifle shots is that your crosshairs are set to 150m by default (with a couple exceptions - note the ideal/recommended range!). That means when you are exactly 150m from the animal you're shooting, the bullet will hit exactly where you aim. If you are closer, it'll go above the crosshair point. Further will be lower than the crosshair point

Low accuracy weapons will absolutely bullseye 100% of the time at 500m, just like high accuracy... maybe it has something to do with weapon sway? Idk. It certainly doesn't reflect actual shot accuracy though.

Pretty easy, and a Common first diamond, because they spawn with the crocs on Emerald Coast, are slow enough to literally run alongside, and wipe out.

Also, like most class 9 non-predator species, they're about as smart as the grass they eat.

Zarza-15 has better performance than the Virant, but at the cost of a lower mag. Both have the same knockdown power and parabolics though. It just depends on whether you want 10rd to spam or 5rd you can rapidly place more precisely than the Virant.

I prefer the Zarza .22lr, but the Virant is much more friendly to casual play.

ANY male can respawn as a G1. Regardless of level.

HM = Diamond farming.

G1 farm= Kill lots and lots of males of the species you're hunting.

If you want to keep your herds managed while hunting G1, you can, but herd management doesn't benefit G1 farming, only dime farming.

If you shoot an animal and it runs off, go to the spot you shot it. You can inspect the initial blood splatter and it can tell you whether or not the shot was lethal.

You can also tell whether a shot was lethal by inspecting your map. Once an animal dies, a hunting pressure zone will spawn on your map as a visual indicator that an animal was shot lethally at that spot

They're high performance but low mag capacity, so they punish inaccuracy. Other rifles of the same caliber have larger magazines, allowing for more shots if you miss or need a follow up.

If you have no level 3s in 50 drink zones you have a lot of potential for growth. Pop the 2s until 3s start showing up.

If you hover over the purple it will say low, medium, high, or dead zone pressure. If it says dead zone pressure it deletes zones and you have to find them again. Additionally any hunting pressure will make animals in those areas more easily spooked. Just make sure you rotate where you’re hunting as the only way to drop pressure in one area is to shoot animals in another.

That's bow range. The fact you're even able to sneak up that close before taking a shot is impressive if you're new.

With rifles you'll be shooting high at that distance, almost all of them have a default zero of 150m.

If you’re not certain you can get a good shot on a nice looking animal I’d leave it , make a note of when and where you spotted it (need zones would be ideal) and come back later , the animal will never despawn

But if you take a shot , botch it and it runs off and dies really far away and you don’t claim it? That animal is gone gone , or if it was a diamond , then it’s lost its rating if you take a naff shot

They're not for everyone, no. More casual players that make it a habit to treat the game as a first person shooter will consider them below standard, and impatient players that want to douse running animals in bullets won't find them to their liking either. I'm quite partial to them, but I also use a single shot handgun as a self defense weapon, so my preferences don't reflect majority opinion.

If you have the weapon pack 1 the Virant .22LR can be very useful. If you’re over 100 M out from your target and shoot the ground or in the air it wont spook it just make them go alert. Very useful if you want to try to get them in a better position for a shot. And if you still don’t like the shot opportunity just be patient and wait for them to calm down, and try again.

Yeah putting them in your loadout just puts them in inventory. You gotta then go into inventory to add them to the wheel. It's a bit annoying, but once you get a "forever" loadout set you're good.

Trust your dog. Find blood splatter and have it track, then just follow the dog. There are perks you can get later on that makes manual tracking more precise and easier, but bloodhound trumps it 90% of the time.

Depending on the caliber non vitals or no organs can absolutely kill , if it was a rare animal I’d chase it down to the ends of the earth until I was either sure it was alive or I come across the harvest

Chances of seeing one at all are low, but eventually, given enough time, you can find them with absolutely no effort, just casually killing and harvesting males.

Females won’t respawn as great ones so that won’t directly help, but they could respawn as rares so like .. it’s no major crisis if they shoot females but do try and focus on larger males

You can shoot little itty bitty ones (though if one is exceptionally small I’d leave it as it would actually do you a favour in spawning larger animals as the game attempts to balance itself out)

Realistically you can keep it simple while you learn! Just make sure the ammo class (found on the ammo info) matches the animal you're shooting and go from there. I spent my first like 150 hours with the .243, .270, .300, and the .22lr rifles to cover all my classes

There's no magic rifle that'll give you a power fantasy experience while still ethically killing, but I do recommend using Polymer (Penetration) rounds when choosing ammo. It's more expensive but they're much easier to use. Expansion rounds do more per-organ damage but are greatly affected by range and even shooting angle, making them a more challenging round type to exploit.

Barely anything is spawning at my drink zones, and when they do, most of the time it’s only females and sometimes they will even immediately flee when I fast travel to my tent, even the ones that are 300 meters away. Anyone know a fix?

Should also mention that this is going on for several different maps and species. The tent and tripod placements have worked before so I don’t think it would be that causing the problem
