Zeroing allows you to set the drop distance of the bullet. Most rifles have a standard of 150 meters and with the perk, you can set it to either 75m, 150 or 300m. So it either halves or doubles the range of the standard zeroing.

Yes, the range of your gun if you will. Each gun will have their own standard range, like some pistols being 50 meters. Lvl 1 of the perk adds the short range, Lvl2 adds the long range

If you look at guns in the store or rather their ammo, Range tells you how far they can shoot. Like i said most rifles have 150meters as their Medium Range, but there are exceptions, like the .470 Nitro rifle only reaching 75 meters

Early on you can use the rifle with free ammo to earn yourself some money. No need to waste money on buying equipment you won't need.

  • Try and aim for vitals, usually lung shots. For most animals, the easy way to do this is to aim slightly behind the front legs.
  • Female animals usually don't provide a trophy and thus give less money than males.
  • On the bottom right you'll notice a circle with a cone, indicating the wind direction. If it's facing towards you, the animals won't smell you as quickly as when the cone is facing towards them.
  • Sprinting, especially through bushes, will create noise and might alert animals nearby. In general, animals won't hear you until you've reached 150 meters and will start to become Attentive to Alert considering how aware they are of you. If you get too close or make too much noise, animals will flee and leave their needzone momentarily, either searching an alternative one close by or return when not chased.
  • In order to get good trophies and good money, you need to make sure you shoot the animals with the correct ammo. Check an animals class and compare it to the classes your gun can shoot. No need in blasting a poor rabbit to heaven with a 7mm when they only need a .22
  • If you shoot an animal, everything within 150 meter radius will hear the shot and flee. Once you kill an animal, a purple zone called hunting pressure will appear. At the center of this zone is the bloodspot from where you've shot it, so if you lose track, go to the center.
  • You can shoot 3 animals with a regular gun/rifle before the built up hunting pressure deletes nearby needzones. You can avoid this by hunting in multiple areas, as there is a set amount of hunting pressures that can be on a map before the first one despawns

Oh and you can rest at any of the houses you unlock, though you(ll need to pay money to do so. "Resting" allows you to set the time in the game, for example if you don't want to hunt at night, you can go to a lodge in the evening, rest and set the time to your liking

Several ways:

  • If you have the Bloodhound DLC, you can tell your dog to track the nearby blood and it'll find the animal for you, leading you to it's location. In case of small animals like ducks etc, you can get the Retriever DLC where the dog can retrieve Class 1 animals for you.
  • Center of your hunting pressure is where you shot, and killed, the animal. Go to the center and see if you can find any tracks and/or blood.
  • You can change the color of the highlighted tracks to make it easier to differenciate between animals being tracked and random tracks in between. Personally I have them set to Yellow for tracked, Cyan for not tracked. This way you can find your highlighted animal's tracks easier.
  • If you're unsure whether or not the track you have selected is from the animal you've killed, open up your map. It should display in the upper right corner the animal info and depending on the skills you've leveled up, whether or not it's injured.

Like this one shows the Wound Severity is N/A or Not Applicable. Aka, you didn't hit it. Otherwise it would show No Organs hit, Non Vital hit, Vital hit. And depending on your skill, the bleeding rate would show Low, Medium or high.

To add a scope, first it needs to be in your inventory. Then open up your weapons tab and drag the scope to the corresponding gun, same as you would add ammo to it 🙂

Mythical is the second best difficulty you can regularly find. They're guaranteed Gold trophy unless you mess up the harvest checks and if you're really lucky, they rarely provide a Diamond trophy

You'll need to go to one of the house's you've unlocked, then go to the box symbol, that's the store. There you have Storage where your bought weapons are, the shop itself where you can buy ammo and your sights. Easiest is to check the gun you want the sights for, then on the bottom right in the store click on compatible items. It'll show you all the ammo and sights you can use with it

Yeah, you can get a Trophy lodge and store your trophies there. So say you shoot yourself a Diamond or a very rare furtype, or simply animal you wish to keep, you can taxidermy the animal if you have the money, or you can save the harvest for when you have enough money to taxi it

Several of the green ? marks on the map are houses. The game usually leads you to one during the first quest. Otherwise it's a matter of roaming about and unlocking the ? marks to see what they are. When you find a house, you'll need to walk up to the flagpost to claim it

The callers have a certain radius and attraction strength. So let's say you use an Elk Caller, that has a range of 200 meters, Duration of 90 seconds and strength of 40. Which means that if you use it, for 90 seconds any elk within that 200 meter radius might be attracted to the call and come investigate. Some callers like the Elk caller also have a chance to gain vocal responses aka mating calls from the animals you attract.

Do note that not all animals , f.e. any type of Bufallo, have callers so those are unable to be lured closer with callers.

How to use the caller is completely up to you. I've seen people set up a hunting stand near a needzone and use the caller around the time the needzone is used. Others roam around and use the caller to see if they get a response and then others use the callers only when they get a visual on the animal and want to lure it within a comfortable shooting range.

Accuracy wise, all but the Strandberg 10SA Executive have the same accuracy, the forementioned being slightly less accurate. All shotguns have the same recoil as well, so what separates the guns is hipshot accuracy, ammo capacity and reload speed.

Fastest to reload would be the Caversham Steward 12G (base game, 2 magazine) and the Miller Model 1891 (Smoking Barrels DLC, 3 magazine). If you're looking for most bullets in the chamber, you're looking at the Cacciatore 12G (base game, 6 magazine) or the Couso Model 1897 (Rancho DLC, 5 magazine).

Hipshot accuracy would be the Grelck Drilling Rifle (Weapon pack 2 DLC, 3 magazine) and the Strecker SxS 20G (Wild Goose DLC, 2 magazine). If you need a non DLC weapon, the highest hipshot one would be Cacciatore 12G (Base game, 6 magazines).

Do note that some of these guns need points to be obtained, meaning you might have to earn more shotgun points before they become available in the store.

the best way to discover need zones is to run or drive the atv around the area you are interested in. don't worry about spooking animals, you'll find the zones and come back to them later. start near the end or even after the need time ends for the type of zone

Hey guys!

I recently made a Te Awaroa Red Deer drink zone map that you might have seen, issue is that it took me quite a while to make and I'm wanting a more easier system to input my maps / data that will be easy to update and add to.

So I'm happy to share that I'm creating an interactive map website from scratch!

Main features I'm working on:

  • Interactive map for each map in game.
  • Fully web based.
  • Showing all main locations on the map (outpost, lookout etc).
  • Need zones for all animals on the relevant map (More info on this below!)

Extras planned in future:

  • Allow users to add their tents and tripods onto the map, with estimated spook range on the tents (180m currently) and tripods so you can plan out your tent placements before arriving at a zone.
  • Distance estimator.
  • Custom markers.

"But need zones are different for everyone"
Technically this is correct as you will have different zones to the next person, but in general these zones are constant with their placement on the map based on positioning from the map node file, these nodes are essentially where the game is told to spawn X animal. (Which is why solo animals will respawn back at the exact drink zone you kill them at sometimes, as the location or area will be a small 'node' in the map file where it is told to spawn the animal)

From this data I should be theoretically able to make an interactive map that will show every possible location accurately of animal need zones (with some minor variation of the exact location based on node spawn on your map).

So, MP is held in peer-to-peer connections.
Even if you and the endpoint connection have AMAZING internet - any amount of desync or delay, or fluctuation in the internet can cause a disconnect.

My guess is if you are joining games - its just a literal connection issue. Best bet would be to try to connec to servers "close" to you

Usually a Diamond is the biggest of its kind. If they are an antlered species, their antlers are huge compared to the others. And like @stray bloom said, the Difficulty level of the animal gives you a hint, though there can be trolls. All animals have trophy scores, so if you are unsure if the animal you're looking at is a potential Diamond or you're going Diamond hunting for a specific animal, look up their Diamond trophy value.

Best for trophy hunting is to unlock Spotting Knowledge (Ambusher tree) and max it out. That way you'll be able to look at an animal and see

  1. Health
  2. Approximate trophy value
  3. Difficulty

This skill makes it much easier to check for Diamonds and allows you to see if your shot was a vital after a glance( health dropping quickly after your shot).

Do note that with some storyline missions, like Te Awaroa's moose, has an option to either take a picture or shoot the animal. If you take the picture, the animal will flee and you'll never get it again.

Get your guns loadout the way you want. There's plenty of free guns to use and one of the rifles has free ammo too. Make sure to take your binoculars/ rangefinder with you.

Then you want to explore all the ? on your map, as they can contain hunting stands you can buy or free houses to respawn from. Look around for glowing tracks and especially investigate what looks like glowing grass patches (feed zones), flattened grass areas (sleep zones) and groups of tracks near water (drinking zones). All these zones give you an idea at what time that species will be in certain areas.

Then it's just a matter of shooting what you encounter. Best to shoot males, as they hold trophy value and will give more money. Try and aim behind the front legs on the ribs to get a vital shot and collect your kills.

Oh and check the ammo of your guns. Certain animals have a certain class, so you want to shoot them with the right ammo. No use chasing after a rabbit with a 7mm 🤣

You can set your track highlight color the way you want them to. The white tracks are how all tracks start of; currently not investigating. The blue ones are the ones you have inspected. So if you shoot an animal, you can find their blood, inspect it and then follow the blue track towards the body.

If you ever shoot an animal and don't know if you've killed it, open your map. If you kill an animal, there should be a purple circle on the map called hunting pressure. At the center of this circle is the location you've shot the animal, so you should be able to find the tracks there.

As a side note, you can shoot three animals in the same spot without issue but once you've shot 4 in the same spot, the hunting pressure scares animals away from their need zones as it's deemed unsafe to stay there. So you want to shoot 3 max in the same area and then move to a different spot. Hunting pressure disappears by shooting animals in a different area. I think there's a map total of 10 hunting pressure areas before it starts disappearing

Forgot to add @faint sapphire "silent" weapons like bows and crossbows create less hunting pressure, same as shooting from a hunting stand. These effects stack, so you can shoot I believe 16 animals if you shoot them with a bow from a hunting stand.

Unless you're shooting in the air upon approach or using the quads, animals don't really notice you until you're approaching 150 meters. Quads have a spook range of 300 meter around them so when you're driving around, everything will be alerted.

Gunshots go 150 meters I believe but if you shoot with silent weapons like bows and crossbows, you don't generate as much noise and thus, not as much hunting pressure.

Generally I keep my binoculars on the animal as soon as I breach 150 meters. When they get attentative, I crouch walk closer usually around 100 meters. This depends on the animal's difficulty, as that shows their awareness. A 1-Trivial will be oblivious to the world around them while a 9- Legendary might already alert and warning call at 150 meters.

Once again, depends on the animal. If they give me a warning call, I try to either wait for a moment to see if they're going to lay down/eat/drink again, or I lay down and slowly approach. Their warning call is giving you a head's up that they've seen you and are thinking of running away. Based on your actions, the animals will decide on what to do. If you're not willing to risk them fleeing and you're within shooting range, you could take a shot.

Usually animals will warning call as they look at you, then slowly take a few steps back, turn around and slowly walk back to their original spot where they've last seen you. From what I've noticed, if you aren't spotted again, or aren't any closer than before, they start going about their business once more.

Oh, you also wanna keep an eye on your noise level. Approaching animals on an open field versus a crunchy leaf littered forest is different, as they can alert from noise as well.

Lastly, it's much easier to approach animals facing away from you than animals facing you head on. I've been able to get to 25 meters from an animal while it was facing away and I've had warning calls from animals facing me as I walked through their 140 meter radius xD

Oh and animals that had been spooked or hunted before might have a "Nervous" stat. this means they're much more likely to spot you and much more likely to flee the second they see you

Use the correct Class ammo for the animals, try and aim for vitals (right behind the front leg for a nice lung shot) and try to avoid doing headshots as a lot of animals have the skull as a trophy organ.

Most importantly : have fun. Don't worry about spooking a mythical or legendary, you can follow their tracks and find them again.

Blacktails drink later late, if memory serves around 16-21 ish? Try and keep an eye out for need zones and inspect them so they pop up on the map, that way you have an idea at what time certain animals will be in certain areas.

Feed zones will be highlighted grass, sleep zones will be a circular patch of flattened grass and drink zones will be near the water's edge in the shape of a group of tracks.

Generally on new maps, I try and check the water areas from time to time. Usually a good place to find either the animals themselves or their tracks

Noticing a stark difference in how a fresh player like me plays where I just kinda run around until I find things then shoot them vs an experienced player. Should I try to go look up info on zones things spawn at or is that just getting to busy about it

learning about drink/need zones it seems like a complicated system of understanding how things respawn other places, how zones close, it just seems overly complicated and hard to understand how it all fits together. Having to run around the entire map finding all the drink zones seems like it takes a long time and doesnt seem very fun

you don't necessarily need to find every need zone on your map at all, but it is a good idea to start learning animal schedules. id only recommend starting to learn the animals schedules 1 map at a time, as it can get overwhelming very fast
