No, but there is a skill for the dog which will have them defend against a charging animal (last skill lvl 30 BRAVE). I find the dog to make the game more immersive for me, often will talk to the dog as Im stalking

What I do for that, is find the 'easy' target first, then have the dog follow the next blood trail. You can also give dog treats, play, and praise which boost dogs performance.. sometimes mine doesnt wanna track!

The spread of birdshot keeps it reliable up to about 75m, but travel time and leading needs to be considered when shooting at fast targets, especially flying birds. The further they are, the more difficult it will be to land a hit on them beyond 40m or so. It is possible to land shots beyond 100m but practically speaking, you want to try and get inside of 50m for Birdshot.

Buckshot is broken atm and doesn't work properly, so using it at any range will very likely result in a failed harvest check. Only use it on targets that you don't mind losing a trophy rank on.

Slugs also suffer from poor performance, even 10ga brass slugs can't get a lung shot on most class 9 animals in close range, despite being marketed for them. Great for most deer and mid sized game though.

Nope. Finding zones doesn’t add to your population. Your population stays the same until you kill animals which they then respawn (this goes for all but 2 upland birds and waterfowl)

I have this odd glitch where my gun has to reload every time i switch guns in my inventory and when i shoot an animal It says wrong ammo type and there is no ammo type listed. The game thinks im shooting the gun with no bullets but is still shooting the bullet. Shot a diamond gemsbok today but it was a silver because of "wrong ammo type". When i looked at where the ammo type is, thinking i might have used the wrong gun on accident. It was blank. Any ideas?

nvm I got it. the game wasnt recognizing I was shooting a bullet but for some reason was still letting me shoot. I was basically loading an empty mag but it was still shooting so the animal I shot wasnt recognizing the ammo type becuase there was technically no bullet shot. Just had to drag the ammo to the gun itsself again in my inventory.

Missions are a good income killing absolutely any living things you see is the easiest I look at thing as how many animals it takes to buy it like the 7mm is 30-40 animals 270 8-15 animals

1 pack of bullets makes you roughly with good shots 10x as much as the pack cost

Only thing you need to get is a vital shot and anything will die within time always aim for the lungs an try to use as little bullets as possible

There are different caliber ammo for different classes of animals. Try watching some YouTube videos on recommended loadouts to start off but over time as you play the game, it comes down to personal preference. ( I personally use the .22 for class1, ranger .243 for class 2-3, .308 for classes 4-7, .338 for class 8-9)

Is there any significance in leaving or harvesting does? I'm trying to manage the whitetail population on Layton Lake and I'm wondering if taking the does will affect anything. As it is now I've only been taking the bucks, mainly the 2s and 3s. I've not seen any level 1 bucks in my herds but by god the doe population is incredibly high, like 80% of my whitetail are females lol.

Are you certain? All the information on HM suggests that shooting high level targets, thereby reducing the overall lvl of a population, increases the chance that respawns will be of higher quality.

I was under the assumption that leaving the females which are always lvl 1, would increase the spawn rate of males as a result.

Animals will return to their need zones over time, so long as you don't over hunt them and cause the hunting pressure to erase their need zone. Should that happen, they will go elsewhere until the hunting pressure is reduced.

Look on the map and you'll see a ton of brown fields. Each field will accommodate geese, but I prefer using the largest fields to ensure good line of sight in my tripod. I often have issues with the geese landing in the woods along the edges of smaller fields. Also, geese always land into the wind direction, so consider that when starting your hunt for the day.

I've been testing this and found that expansion does have some validity, but it's use is borderline niche. If you're using a firearm that isn't capable of penetrating a target enough to get a double lung from a broadside shot with penetration rounds, expansion will actually be better in that situation, because it will still penetrate enough to hit one lung, but also do massive organ damage.

I tested this with the .45 Air Rifle. At 150m, an angled broadside shot on a whitetail, hitting one lung, with penetration rounds, drops it in about 10 seconds.

The same shot, with the hollow points, drops the deer in 4 seconds flat.

however, the hollow points can't reliably take a lung or heart from a shot where the deer is facing you directly, but Penetration rounds can do so just fine.

The only time this sort of information will actually matter, is when the animal you're targeting is barely within your weapon's ethical kill ability, however. Taking whitetail with an air rifle is pushing what it's actually good for. With firearms well suited to taking down deer, like the 7mm or .308, the penetration rounds will pass through the entire deer, damaging multiple organs and dropping it instantly, thereby making the expansion rounds completely useless in comparison.

Edit- forgot to add that all class 1 animals can be dropped with expansion rounds easily. There's no need to spend more money on penetration rounds when the expansion rounds are cheaper and will still kill any class 1 animal even if you barely scratch their fur/feathers with it.

The exception being the
.22 Hornet, which can also take class 2 animals. It should use penetration rounds to ensure the class 2 animals drop.

Unlock all of the outposts along this river, then change the time to 8:00am. Look at the wind direction, and if it's blowing into the south, fast travel to the southern most outpost (or a tent if you placed one) on the river and move north along the river. Do the opposite if the wind is coming in from the north.

You're guaranteed to find plenty of drink zones and herds upon herds of whitetail.

@west agate there are probably subtle differences, but anything that takes ammo where the minimum score is the class of that animal. for instance, if you hover over an ammo type and it says its for class 4-8, thats one of the best ammo for class 4. Or if the ammo says 2-6, then that ammo is best for 2 in reality, but could go up to 6

that might be a little confusing, let me know if you if you want any clarification. but best gun depends on level, dlcs, and preference. like I bet some people dont like the 7mm mag gun cause its a 1 shot and they want to keep shooting, but its great for taking down one animal at a time with one well placed shot

The great one is above diamond, its a super rare spawn for a few different species. some people just hunt one animal in super efficient fashion trying to get it. I think most people should just play the game, do main missions, explore, maybe you see one, and then once you do that and have the bug, go for it. I think its silly to start with that premise of just trying to get that rare, but to each their own

Your dog won't affect alertness. Birds have great eyesight and hearing, so you want to make sure you're not too close to their landing zone, even if you're in a tripod or blind. If they land within 50m of you there's a good chance they'll spook and take off.

The easiest way to hunt waterfowl (with exception to canada geese) is to shoot them from 100-200m with a .22lr, from a tripod. If you get a semi-auto and practice your shots you can pop 2-3 at a time without much issue. And eventually start landing shots from 150-200m mid flight.

Shotguns are fantastic up to about 50-75m, but beyond that the .22lr and
.22h are just better. Less lead time for airborne shots and able to reach out to nearly 200m reliably, plus the Virant .22lr exists, and is a 10 round semi-automatic, allowing you to snipe entire groups of class 1 animals in one fell swoop.

Using standard firearms will cause hunting pressure to build up to 100% at 4 kills. Limit your kills in the pressure radius to 3 and move on elsewhere if you want to retain a need zone. Alternatively, as mentioned already, hunting from a blind, tripod or other hunting structure will increase the harvest threshold to 15 animals instead of 3, allowing for much more sustained hunting.

You can also use the Bow or Crossbow, which have reduced pressure buildup, and allow you to take 15 animals while walking around before hunting pressure breaks a zone, or 30 animals if you are using a (cross)bow in a hunting structure.

It's generally a good idea to set up 3 hunting zones at least, each with a tent and tripod, or other hunting structure. This way you can fast travel to your hunting area, take your fill of kills, then fast travel to a different area and repeat the process, reducing the hunting pressure in your other areas and rotating around without worrying about botching a need zone.

It could be that you're walking/running inside the blind, which they will hear.

Yeah that's not how blinds work lol. Something is up. Are you on PC or using mods? Also just don't squat in them in the first place, stay standing from the start. Blinds and other structures put you at a static visibility level so you're not going to be any less visible if you stand, crouch or lay prone.

Any reserve can have diamonds, it’s the player and the methods that produces them. Kill high level males, and leave the lows alone. Do it with the right rounds in the right spots. Also hunt diligently. I know it’s the simplest thing ever, but your backpack and stuff that makes noise matters so much. After I ditched my backpack it became so much easier just to move normally and not spook animals. You’ll be able to approach high level animals so much easier. It’s hard to part with but it’s worth it. Learned that from ladylegendXO lol.

Hello. I found a mythical crocodile. I shot twice at it and missed both times. He went into the water. Will he despawn? Can I try again? Also, what are you best methods to hunt crocodiles? Right now I am trying with:

I am having a hard time actually hitting them. I got Zeroing perk but even if I get to 150m (for the rifle) or 60m (for the bow) I often miss.

If you have DLCs, go for higher power. The bow is good, but get closer. Honestly it’s unconventional but I’ve killed a couple alligators out of tree stands. 7mm, 45-70, .44 or .454, or any big round like that. It’s a class 8 animal. It takes a big round. Your croc will not despawn unless you hit it and kill it without harvest check. At least I hope not lol.

You can't over-call, so just as often as you like. I'll spam it 3-4 times in a row and then wait 30-45 seconds before repeating.

I’ve had the game about a week and noticed that in videos, all these animals are coming out to water during their drinking times, so I thought why not, I’ll just hang around water for a day and see what shows up… turns out if you haven’t discovered the drinking zones, the animals almost never show up… then I thought I’d just run around the lakes and find the drinking zones because Lady Legend said that’s how she did it… I only found like two sets of tracks around the lakes when I did that… Then I set my time to 10 minutes after the black bear drinking time, and ran around the lakes and amazingly, I found prints and zones. I don’t know if this is common knowledge, but if you want to FIND drinking zones for a species, set your time to the end of their drinking period, because other animals trample the drinking zones when it’s their turn. If everyone already knows this, sorry I’m late to the party.

not a bug. Backpack adds noise and visibility… it’s a terrible choice to carry one unless you’re just carrying it to haul extra gear from your tent to your stand, and then return the backpack to your tent before hunting.

that being said, packmule and backpack add up to 6kg weight increase, not a coincidence that all the big blinds and stands weigh 6kg.

when you’re standing you have something like - as an example - 10 visibility. When you walk, it goes up to 15, running 20… now add 8 to all of those numbers and you’ll realize when you’re just walking you spook everything already without the backpack, and most things will spook from you standing up in a field if they’re in range.
