Bloodhound is useful if you take a bad shot on an animal but it goes down anyways after running for forever.

No backpack, not max level, but even if i could level up, its too hard to find any animals to hunt. I'm crawling when i have to, not running, taking good shots, but animals just flee no matter what. I always go to their need zones with usually just 1 or 2 animals there, but there is so much underbrush that I cant see them at all until i accidentally get close enough to scare them

I used to have drink spots in all the places I have circled, but a day ago I just shot a bunch of animals arround there and got hunting pressure lvl 4 in some places, now I have cleared off most hunting pressure arround these spots, and from what I know animals should come back after the hunting pressure is removed, but I have changed the time multiple times and they haven't came back

Need to hit vital organs. Most commonly lungs. Heart shot is the most efficient, but also hardest. Liver shot works too. No head shots in this game, they will most likely ruin your trophy.

They're both fundamental QoL issues I discovered almost immediately. They're incredibly frustrating and increasingly annoying the more I play.

It's ridiculous that, when tracking an animal, you lose the track if you (for example) 'Examine' a 'Need Zone' as you pass through it. I can't believe that 'Examine' / 'Mark' & 'Track' aren't different buttons and both effectively under 'Examine'.

Likewise, you may have a desire or there may be a quest to target a specific animal and trying to find a relevant 'Need Zone' is so time consuming.

Dumb that these basics weren't included by default.

If you have Te Awaroa then Fallow Deer are easy to hunt in the southeast corner of the map. No brush, and they have some nice trophies. Red Deer as well but their drink zones are a little more annoying to hunt IMO. If you only have the starter maps then whitetail on Layton

If you do not hit vitals (lungs, heart, liver...), you cause only minor bleeding. The animal will not die for that and is left alive on the map with lower health (something like 25%).

Your weapon (and ammo) needs to match the animal class. You should not hunt class 7 animals with class 4 ammo.

Alright so I have my need zones scouted and my tents and stands set up, now what? I'm not sure how to actually grind for animals. Do I sit in my stand at the same need zone and reset the time until the animals are gone? What is "shooting down" a need zone? I have no idea how any of this actually works ;n;

Like, what do I do with single bull or cow zones? How does respawning effect how many/what animals return to the zone?

If you change the Ranger to Cuomo pistol, you have plenty of space to try things out.
I carry Virant and Cuomo almost in every loadout. Then, depending on the map, I fill it up with different variations of Mosin-Nagant, Zarza .308, 7mm Malmer, Canning Magnum or bows.

Use 243 soft points and grind fallow on Te Awaroa if you have it. Or use what you have to kill crocs on EC. Those are the best money options IMO. And no you need to play perk points smart. I think LadyLegend and Scarecrow both have YouTube videos about their skill trees

Multiplayer servers you can hunt any map. But if you have SRP go and kill an flock or 2 of turkeys and you can afford some ammo boxes. From there you can grind bison with your high caliber stuff

Grinding Moose on NEM using herd management, only killing LVL 3-5s. I haven't seen a LVL 5 since I finished tenting the map. Do I just have bad luck, or is there something I'm doing wrong? I try and clear out the areas I don't have tented every once in awhile, but it takes MUCH longer than going to my favored locations, and my kills per hour is already stupid low (probably like, 10 kills per hour lmfao). I was always curious about the dog. can dog scare off animals or no I was under the impression that dogs had no effect on the animals

For what it's worth, doing it to that extreme within a couple hours almost completely kills the experience of the game feeling like hunting. Optimized that hard is literally just fast travel, shoot, pickup, repeat as fast as possible

Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I would pose that it becomes more likely to burn oneself out on the game that way, so grind in a way that you enjoy first and foremost rather than focusing on numbers

Oh for sure. 90% of the time I just wander and carry weapons for each animal on the reserve, but right now I'm going for a Great One and kind of need to maximize my output of kills to actually maybe get one to spawn. I really only plan to grind for GOs and SRs. I really do feel burnt out, especially when comparing my grind to other people's.

how does the time system and sleep work? So like if it's 16:00 and I sleep until 4:00 will the animals teleport to their need zones or will they be in the same spot and just start traveling towards their need zone?

They will appear in the zone if they would’ve been there at that time. For example if a feed zone ends at 12 and drink zone starts at 12 so the animal won’t get to the drink zone until 13, changing the time to 12:30 won’t make them appear

Yes. So a good rule of thumb is to change the time to the last hour of their drink time. So if they drink from 12-15 change it to 14

for some animals yes, and even then sometimes the max levels dont make it

for other animals (mostly ones with antlers or horns), they can sometimes make it at 1 below max

Okay so im starting to get alright at the game and making shots, stalking, tracking. Do i focus on completing missions now? What are my primary goals? Should i just grind levels and gun type mastery before i try for any big male hunts?

I believe that there is no right or wrong way to play COTW. You basically can do whatever you like doing.
I get the most satisfaction on missions, others enjoy getting diamond and great one trophies.
So, go as you like. 🙂

If your low lvl I should probably suggest gaining lvls and getting the right skills and perks but there isn't really a goal to the game you can either jus turn off story mode and hunt freely or focus on story mode

Each map setup is different. Which maps do you have?

You'll also want to have plenty of cash because setups get quite expensive....
