Regarding tripods, safest is like 50-75m minimum away from the zone you're stalking - and I like to show up as zone time begins, because the animals have travel time (unless birds, then they just show up all of the forever)

Revontuli, Vurhonga and Te Awaroa are the 3 best maps in my opinion. Each one has its completely different species to the other 2 and you’ll be getting entirely different experiences on each map

Of course, as you play on the different reserves in the game you’ll likely develop a preference for some more than others, but those 3 are the best for someone who hasn’t gotten any reserves thus far

Hello chaps. Had a break from COTW - it's been a few months. There's been several updates since I last played. I just checked the cotw-support bit, but I can't see anything relevant, so: is tracks randomly disappearing at night and not coming back in the morning a known bug? I just had it on NE today and I couldn't track anything, even during the daytime. No blood splats from the shot, no tracks, nothign. Had them to start with, then it went to 1800 and they all disappeared, so I put the torch on, tried the NV binos but nothing. Fast-forwarded to morning - still nothing... 😒

well, just go for heart shots and if the .300 isn't dropping them on the spot try the .338, that definitely should do just that

update: having WAY better luck with polymer tip bullets against mooses

also im sot sure but polymer tip bullets seem to make the mooses i shoot bleed more rapidly, with soft point i could almost only get very low, now i get tons of medium bleed rate

yeah bullet type is very range-dependent

close-range, softpoints will destroy something

longer range, you want polymers

as a rule of thumb, unless you're shooting the smallest possible animal for the gun class always use polymer for far better results 😉

i might swith out the ammo for the 243 at some point to but the only reason i dnt is because soft point ammo for that gun is free, thats also whi i use that for medium game

well, i only ever use the .243 for classes 2-3 but even there i never actually use softpoint, far too frustrating to see even roe deer bolt away just because the bullet didn't even reach halfway to the heart with a frontal shot

You can look after drink time, but catching the animals while you're there/spotting them while they're drinking can be quicker than picking up the tracks.

a single point is a lot higher of a difference for animals with a lower max score

Animals can only make diamond at their max level or one level below. How often they make diamond at either level ranges from guaranteed (lvl 5 wildebeest) to non existent (mtn lion at lvl 8)

Been trying to do that diamond challenge on Parque Fernado and haven't been able to get a diamond water buffalo( killed at least 6-7 mythicals) or the mule deer. I had found a medium ranked mule once and heart shot it just to be trolled into it being a high ranking gold. Haven't even found one that ranked again. I've been water/pond hopping but all I can find are mythicals for the buffalo and easy for the mules that are kinda low ranked(barely above 280). I do use tripods, blinds, and stands to help with the pressure issue. Been going on a month with this task. I finally just got lucky with the teal on a class 2 the other day. Already super bummed I had to walk out on Medved map uncompleted thanks to the mission being bugged for the photo between 6-7 am.

For starters, make sure you’re not running everywhere. Like you’ve already figured out, animals have incredible hearing. When you’re out in the bush, walking makes sure you’re not making a lot of noise so you’re not spooking animals

A good place to find animals is by the water drinking. There will almost always be a species drinking at any particular time.

It will take time to learn things on your own definitely, such as how far away animals spook from, where animals inhabit the map, what time they drink, optimal shot placement to get heart of neck shots, etc

But the main thing is making sure you aren’t being spotted by these animals. Make sure you stay silent and out of sight

For shot placement, the safest place to shoot an animal is in the lungs as they’re often pretty damn big. Wait for the animal to go broadside (perpendicular to you with it’s left or right side facing you) and aim right behind the shoulders

Diamonds are, unfortunately, not generally handed out. There's a few mission related ones, I think, but - that said - you gotta grind a bit for them

and you basically accomplish that by killing low levels and getting them to respawn as higher levels. And then you kill those higher levels and basically through selective harvesting you curate a diamond respawn

It would help if you made a waterfowl setup of the respective species on the map. Any map that comes with waterfowl will give you decoys for that species, minus mallards and geese (they have their own decoy DLCs that come with a shotgun and new ground blind type)

1. Sight looks like it's zeroed at 50 - e.g. green and red are pretty much spot on together

2. Sight not actually anywhere near where it should be anyway

with the other zeroing distances, I find I get closer using the red dot than the green

Why does my loadout always reset when I come back to the game the next time, I exit the game and then go back to me having standard weapons all the time and I need to manually take everthing I hade before and get it equiped. It shouldn't be like that right?

Finally got it, but the 5 pin sight is just as off as the rangefinder by the looks of it. But I don't know whether to report it as a bug because of the perk thing @iron isle mentioned. At the moment, the fourth pin from the top is shooting about an inch low at 60m (see image for aim points with 600gr arrows and 60m zero). I tried with the CB-70 and CB60 and the behaviour is the same. Do you know how the perks affect bows?

this game is driving me mad this week

yesterday we had "when is a bow not a bow?" with every other "use a bow" mission allowing the crossbow

now we have "when is a muzzle loader not a muzzle loader?" and the answer is apparently that the moose I just shot with the old muzzle loader to do the mission about harvesting a moose with - wait for it.... a muzzle loader... doesn't count

apparently it has to be the new (old) muzzle loader

i stopped playing it a few weeks ago for similar reasons, no point damaging your sanity over all kinds of irksome design decisions/bugs, maybe one day they'll actually manage to fix all the nasty things as in:
guns havinng bent barrels/aim offset, penetration issues, ghost bullets, hitbox detection issues, iron bushes, getting yeeted off your atv from simply driving uphill, getting mauled while sitting in metal enclosures, stuck animals, broken waterfowl in MP and the list could go on and on without an end in sight...
but going by how long the game's been out i'm kinda losing hope tbh

Spine doesn't work any more as it's considered unethical

It also depends on the animal and calibre. Moose you need to neck or heart

Lynx go down instantly with double lung

For moose, even a heart shot with 300 gives 1-2 seconds of movement

You should be aware of need zones, if you care. Hunting more than 3 animals in 1 area can cause the zones to be removed.

Hey Guys, Is anyone else having a problem with the COTW crashing a lot at the moment? Both the wife and I, plus a few others we talk to on the servers we speak to are having from 1 - 15 crashes a day!! We've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, verifying the game files, restarting, private servers, etc We can't pin it down to anything specific, we are sending the crash reports to EW. Just wondering if anyone else if having an issue like this?

pfft yea, the damned birds are highly aggressive, same on medved, but actual predators you'd expect to maul you only ever run away EXCEPT if you go afk for 2-3 minutes while sitting in a metal cage on vurhonga, then you'll get mauled by a lion that shouldn't be able to see you at all (due to lying on the ground) and much less able to actually hit you 💀
