I've done it a few times to get specific diamonds, so here's how I did it...
The goal is to reduce the number of 'big males' and keep them to a few (4-6) easily-visited hunting spots. 'Big male' for red deer means difficulty 5-9. 'Small male' means difficulty 1-4.

Step one: Scouting
-First, I used a paint program to prepare a map of Te awaroa, and researched all the spots where my deer could drink. (Thank you Pro XCK)
-Second, I spent a few days scouting, searching for 90 to 90% of the drink zones On my prepared map I'd put a blue dot for herds that have only does or small males. A yellow dot for a spot with big males where I rather they wouldn't be, and a green dot for those spots I liked to keep big males to hunt. (Say three herds around a given lake, that makes a nice hunting spot)

So this scouting step involves figuring out the spots I didn't like, and the spots I did like, marking them differently. Setting up tents to visit undesirable spots quickly.

Step two: cleanup
-In this step, I'd run through all 'yellow spots' (aka the herds in spots I didn't like hunting at) and kill the big males (difficulty 5+ for red deer. 3+ for animals that max at 5 like Sika deer). After sweeping through my yellow areas, I'd sleep at a tent, the herds would refresh, I'd do another sweep.
Repeat and rince until the big males are replaced with small males or females - turning spots blue on my map as I go.

Step 3: Profit
Eventually, I've altered my map so all the big males are concentrated in the 4-6 hunting spots I do like!
At this point I'd remove tents from undesirable areas, set them to easily sweep through my favorite hunting spots, hunt at leisure!

Things to keep in mind: Remember that killing four animals in an area 'burns' the need zones there. So be mindful to not kill too many animals in the same spot. Unless it's a really annoyingly placed need zone and you -want- to force it to go elsewhere.

Hello! I'm doing an herd management red deer grind on Te Awora in order to get the red deer great one and a bunch of diamonds as well. I started grinding the lakes I like the least to fill them up with level 4 or lower deer. The problem is that, because I have a bunch of level 4s and lower deer, I consequently have some level 9 stags in the same zones. Should I leave those level 9s, should I shoot them enough until they become level 4s and lower or should I try to zone swap them?

308 is one of the kings of 4-8s more 4-6s
300 is one of the best 7-9 rifles in the game

If you’re trying to get larger respawns, leave the level 1-2s for animals that max at 5

And females will always respawn as females, males will always respawn as males

You know there's only two non DLC maps right? Layton and Hirsch...
They're not great... But you can manage well on either hunting ducks, I suppose. And if you find good spots for red deer on Hirschfelden (Water areas north of the map, I believe) that's another decent way to make money.
Oh, tip: You cannot simply hunt at one good spot for deer, since if you kill four animals with a rifle in a spot, it'll 'burn' the zone and animals will avoid it henceforth. You have no choice to mix it up and hunt in a variety of spots.

(Though for duck hunting it's less of an issue)

If you kill a single animal zone the zone will delete so it’s best to avoid those zones because they only spawn other 1 animal zones of the same gender. If your not grinding then you might as well shoot but it’s not good if you are. Learn to avoid shooting those for the best results
