So the other day I've been running around a bear for a solid hour and 30 minutes trying to get a shot off.
It all started in Roonachee Highs. Near the tower on the highest mountain.
I've heard the bugger and started crouch walking to it until I've seen it's fresh droppings. Not seeing the animal anywhere I've stood up and started walking following it's tracks.

The animal made a massive loop at which point I've seen him again on a top of a cliff but didn't have a good shot and by the time I've spotted him - He's already started running again.
He then proceeded to do a massive 8 figure going back to the place I've originally tracked him at. At that point his new tracks blended with old tracks and I no longer were able to get him.

Any ideas and tips on how to track and hunt black bears in Layton Lake Distric?

so quick question, I've always wondered what these stats mean

if these are ranges to 100, does this mean 1% more visibility and 3% more noise?

not entirely sure exactly what they mean, but here's what i've observed:
each level of backpack adds one bar to your noise meter and makes your visibility meter one level or so higher than it otherwise would be

btw for visibility, the levels i have seen are as follows:
-Full circle: most visible to animals
-oval: quite visible to animals
-line with half-circle underneath: somewhat visible to animals
-bright straight line: quite difficult for animals to see you
-faint straight line: you are almost completely hidden from view
(note: short of not physically existing, you will never be 100% invisible to animals)

I'm asking in the first place because perhaps this quantification could help actually determine how backpacks are

I've noticed that on some occasions actually, I can't recall if it's the small or med backpack, but the visibility lines would not change and increment by a meter

This led me to believe that though those visibility meters are a good way to communicate to you how visible you are or not, they aren't that precise

not so overwhelmingly good that you always take for the extra space, but are willing to sacrifice some stealth for it

probably also good for when you want to bring a bunch of callers too though since then you just draw them to you

but that's in part why I wondered if it could just lower your movement speed rather than raise visibility

since I didnt see this answered, there's an active perk that lets you see the approximate distance when pressing F, this however replaces your zeroing perk.
otherwise you could use viewfinder binoculars, or use the map to set a gps point where you spotted it, and check the distance to your map pin

Each animal has a way of scoring (antlers, horns, weight, combined, etc) and at certain scores an animal earns a medal. Rare fur types are, well, rare and it takes time to find those

I wouldn't say I have a 'guide' but... tips?
-Their drink time is 6:00 to 10:15, catching them at a lake is a great way to hunt them.
-My favorite rifle for red deer is the 7mm, anything weaker and you'd best go for a double-lung shot or a heart shot.
-The red deer heart is smallish, low and set exactly between the legs. So for a heartshot aim from the front, or not-perfectly-from-the-side between the front legs. (I say not-perfectly-from-the-side because you'll hit a leg bone if you're in a perfect broadside heartshot attempt)

It varies according to savefiles, so, it wouldn't help you to get someone else's needzones.
However the same lakes tend to be involved. So you're better off learning which lakes have red deer at drink time.

And well, you can just be sneaky and observe a lake 6:30 to 10 with binocs, or run around after 8 to spot drink zones on the shore. aka find out yourself! It's fun.

A lot of the shots stop really early on in the flesh without penetrating to vitals at all at shallow angles (Aka 20-45 degrees)

It doesn’t drop them like it used to, it will kill them, but not that quickly. It also doesn’t count as a vital organ. Spinal cord drops them though, but that also isn’t a vital organ and it’s very very hard to hit intentionally.

I’m on Hirsch and doing a mission to kill 2 Fallow deer with the .243 and get gold or better. I have killed 3 bucks that were able to be golds and they all were silvers! Am I really having that bad of luck or is there something wrong? Also, I really hate the story mission taking the picture with the lake in the background! 😭

An interesting thing about that mission on Hirsch is that you can take a picture of the lake and have the Fallow Deer almost completely hidden and it will count.

So you can get away with just a bit of antlers in a tree with the lake in view and it counts.

Roughly 200 meters seems to be the distance you need to be to the animal for it to count. Just make sure you're zoom out enough to get most of the lake in the background. As far as times go it will depend on how your map is, but 9-11 am seems to be a ballpark for finding the deer in an opportune spot to get the photo. You might have to skirt along the area while facing the lake to get a good shot.

You might be able to get away with being further, but that depends on the game if it "counts" the photo as close enough or not. Not sure what it wants specifically for it to count "being close enough"

yes. callers are great to bring animals closer to you if you wanna, say, get a better shot or use a bow or handgun

Good to know: most have a 90 seconds 'cooldown', about 40-50% chance to work (give or take)...
But when you hide yourself in a perfect bush, got the wind in your favor and -heard- those animals be close. Ohhh yes, you'll see a few eager female deer shuffle close, look around... Now you wait a little longer - the buck is often fashionably late.

And then for extra grins, use an arrow, watch them scatter... Don't run to that trophy, stay hidden! they'll stop panicking quite quick since you didn't make much noise, and they'll trot back to their earlier place, just a nudge more nervous. And you can bow-hunt another...
Just keep in mind: Nervous animals do not respond to callers, so if you were running around and they called several warning cries, chances are they'll say 'nope, not going to that gal with a pretty voice, i'm staying riiiight here'.

Vualez #1: Mount Leviathan, Spot 2 different coyotes (Easier, larger area)
Vualez #10: Lake Leviathan, kill a coyote within 30m with a bow.

Maybe it'd help more if we gave opinions on various rifles...
-I find the ranger (main game) to be a superb 'light' rifle (for animal classes 2-6, but best against 2-4). No need to chase a replacement.
-For 'medium' rifles, the sportster from Te Awaroa is hard to beat and very popular (classes 4-8, best against 4-6)
-The 7mm (main game) is actually better than the sportster (If you can tolerate a single shot in the barrel) as it has more stopping power, and will be handy against animal classes 4-9 (Superb against red deer).
-From Cuatro Colinas there is a 6.5mm Martenssen that is very long ranged, same penetration as the Sportster, unfortunately it has noticably less stopping power. Its polymer ammo in particular causes very little bleeding. You might want to stick to its regular ammo and stay on animal classes 4-5, maybe.
-For heavy rifles, I love the Rangemaster though I wouldn't use it against a Buffalo. I'll hunt lions and bison with it no problem.
I can't comment or compare with the Yukon rifle, don't have that DLC.

Hey Snake, I had to research a -lot- before tackling coyotes, they're a very challenging animal.

In short, you need to know: They have very keen ears, keen eyes, and a keen nose. Soo...
1-Watch that wind, make sure it's in your favor, if it wafts your scent in the coyote's direction, bye doggie.
2-Hide, hide well, find that perfect bush, stay there. If you -have- to get a bit closer, do so on your belly if within 100m.
3-Even so, they're a trick, I have all the skills to improve my sneakyness and noise and no backpack, I still have trouble getting within 50m of a coyote. The only times I could do less than 50m is when I had the wind in my favor, was well hidden and used a lure to get -them- to approach me. (Not totally true, doing slow-belly-crawl I occasionally could get a bit closer)

Corollary: If the mission doesn't force you to use a bow, crawl on your belly and use a rifle from fair range.
If it does require to use a bow, well, the practice being super-sneaky will help you get there, but practice those 50m arrows at the range, and remember the wind is not your friend when you're bow-hunting.

Oh, there is one saving grace if you're shotgun hunting: They're slow runners... If you start at say 75 to 50m and chase a coyote like a maniac at full run, you have a chance to catch up to it and shotgun it.

I just noticed you're a bit newish to the game @shut cloak . I'll suggest you tackle other missions for a bit, until you get the sneaky-help skills (making less noise in tall grass especially) and get some practice sneaking on to easier animals. Deers are pretty easy to sneak up to, I challenge you to nab a pistol, and sneak within 50-75m of a deer to nail it in the lungs. 😉 It's good practice.

Thank you so much for a long answer. I did manage to kill 1 Coyote at night, while luring it towards me with the biggest caliber I had (i needed a guaranteed kill). The trick is not with hunting them but spotting them. Whenever I hear one I immediately stop and began to crawl a little bit towards it (after a few seconds of course), try to crawl to a high spot and lure them. They usually shoudl follow the lure. But there are none of them! For me its a nonsense that a game tells you "there are too many of them and they are a threat to other animals" when there are none of them. 1 out of like 2-3h real life wandering at night (slow).

With deers I have 0 problem, just need to score a quick death shot rn and a 200m kill (hard when I dont have the perk or binocoulars to know how far from one I am)

I don't know if this is still valid, cus it's been a while since I got the binoculars, but back before I did I used to spot the animal, open my map, and hover over the spotted animal icon. Somewhere on the map, I think bottom right corner, it says the distance to that icon. Maybe try that?

Anybody know a way around the sound meter bug on xbox (Fast traveling to certain outposts when I play Revontuli multi such as the Nokkasaari island outpost makes my noise meter bug out and after a bit of running eventually get stuck on maximum noise which spooks everything and makes duck hunting pretty much impossible) other than fast traveling to another spot and go there myself?

My pleasure buddy, I had a big challenge hunting them. And here's something I forgot to mention:
Coyotes are extra tricky if you use lure, because they don't vocalize much and walk slowly towards a lure, and to boot they have a habit as predators to try and circle downwind of where they think the noise comes from. That makes lure hunting difficult with Coyotes.

My personal method was to hunt them at night, when they're drinking at a lake. I found that easier than using lures.

'quick kill bonus' can be seen if you hover your mouse cursor over... one of the numbers at the bottom of the screen while in harvest mode. But quick kill bonus of 100 percent, that basically means they have to die really fast. Try to go for heart shots, that rifle is rather weak for bears.

I felt their predator mode on my own skin. Found one, crawled on rock and started to lure. After like 10 minutes of waiting and luring he finally came real close (like 5m?). I shot him. But the game bugged and it didnt read the shot. It also happened to me before the coyote into a bear. And a bear is huge. Shotted straight to the head from like 5m and not even a blood spill. Also after those "bugged shots" the animals froze like they dont know whats going on. So did I.

Also there is a hot spot for coyotes near the post in Cheelah. I have visited this place like 5 time during the active time (17-20). Never saw any coyotes. Trying for 6th time at the moment. Wish me luck

Near the cheelah hiking village there's a little lake, I kid you not I found as many as three coyote drink spots around that lake, used it often for the missions.
Coyote drink time is 00:30 to 4:00 or so though, so you gotta get used to night hunting.

Yeah I shoudl definetely ask for help here but the follow up messages were kinda spammy I think 😅.
Anyway, Ive found another exploit. When you shoot an animal and it doesnt die instantly (like me trying to head shot a bear) the zone will still be clean. The moment the animal dies the hunting pressure comes onto map. You can really use it to some advantage to know if the animal you shot went down or if you shoudl sneak for the wounded one.

i need some tips for sneaking up on ibex lol

im trying to do the mission 'Up and At Em" but oof, no matter what i do i cant get within ~60meters of them, i can be standing still in a bush, scent eliminator on, and they will warning call and dip before coming remotely close, and sneaking towards them seems to spook them at around 100 meters consistently, and idk what im doing wrong lol
