It's not a bug, it's a limitation.

however, the transitions would be a lot more seamless if they used a pseudorandom pattern instead of this grid/checkerboard stuff

apparently, due to a thing called surface tension, an object hitting water at high speed (such as a bullet) might as well be hitting a concrete slab. the bullet can go through it, but not a whole lot of it before losing too much energy

I'm pretty sure the default zeroing differs between rifles. Might have 75, 100, or 150 as a default zero. usually it is the 'middle' zero for those that have unlocked long range and short range zero.

I don't think it matters, but I promised to double check this, so:

The .243 shoots identically with medium zero as with no zeroing perk. With full perk unlock, you'll have 75m, 150m, and 300m zero available.

As soon as you deactivate the zeroing perk it goes back to that medium zero (i.e. 150m). There used to be a bug where this was not the case (a 300m zero remained if switched perk) but this has been patched. Edit: nevermind, not patched 😅

With that being said, the difference is negligible and even though the bullet hits slightly above crosshairs at 75m, the animal will be so close that the point of impact is still within the vital area. The trajectory is so flat that there is virtually no difference between 100m and 150m.

The .338 from the base game is the second best.

If you can get close, a bow with heavy arrows will outperform them both.

They run way before I even see them

that happens naturally. Just an unavoidable thing in this game

especially in the early game where you're more or less just running around shooting everything you see for money and xp

you'll spook tons of game that way and there's not much you can really do

you'll especially spook smaller game like rabbits that are everywhere but you can't easily spot them

for now just accept it and be on your way leveling up and progressing

and eventually you'll reach the point where you never really spook anything cause you basically teleport to your 7645th red deer kill via tents on your great one grind

If I wound an animal, does it stay on the map, how does that work? I have shot a few, and due to the low bleed rate, I abandon the search. I looked around and found there is a consecutive kill/harvest bonus. Does that carry through if I shoot an animal, but it is only wounded?

Any easy 20k early on seems to be just doing the main story in Yukon. It's pretty quick if you jump on an ATV. I walked the entire main story mission and got something like another 20-30k from bears and moose and caribou along the way. And a few bison.

It's also got a lot of area that has easy line of sights to a vast area.

in multiplayer, not being able to claim animals can sometimes be the result of getting disconnected from the server. there's a way to check your ping to the other users but im not sure what they keybind is for xbox. (if the ping is all zeroes, you were disconnected from the server and it simply didnt register properly on your end)
in singleplayer, try pulling out the camera and then putting it back away

animal respawn mechanics aren't really that well known. Some people say different things work for them and others say those same techniques don't work.

Most people tend to agree that waiting about about 6-7 in-game days from when your animals were killed will respawn them for you

you can do that by just resting in a bed and setting the time back by 1 minute each time 6-7 times

(resting in quick succession can get really expensive though so make sure your in-game wallet is ok with it)

I’ve had animals respawn so much quicker than that, in a little less than an in-game hour actually, sometimes a little more than that. Without resetting the time too. So I’m personally not really that convinced by that method. But hey, if it works then it isn’t too bad I suppose.

I think the fast travel to outposts does not spook like tents do. I could be wrong.
That being said, there seems to be a "safe zone" around outposts to prevent animals being in them.
I don't think EW wants wildlife getting caught up on/inside the human structures. (Possibly except raccoons digging through trash cans).

With that being said I've several times fast traveled to an outpost and heard mating calls nearby, so it's definitely not the same spook radius as tents, if there even is spooking involved.

You can get Canada goose and Tundra Goose there. But I think some people will claim that their presence is greater near water. I can not confirm that.
Greylag goose is only in the southern 1/3 of the map.

Some tips for you:

Use excactly 20 decoys.
Be hidden with at least a white stripe symbol.
Freshwater reeds are good for hiding and allow upward sight.
Be upwind (Yes, geese have noses and they work).
Never get closer than 3m.
Do not over use the caller. Stop calling when they circle.
The 20Gauge is underrated because it has slightly tighter choke.
If you're not the shotgun type try using the .22LR from the other side of lake (if lake).

But my problem is when they start to circle they don't come down, they just fly in a circle for some minutes and then fly away

What's difference between Expansion and Penetration

I'm working on an aiming guide using no zeroing perk. It's still WIP but so far it looks like this.

And I could use some help: There are many guns I don't own and cannot test, but I suspect a few might use the existing bullet drop patterns. Is there any chance one of you fine folks would be game to spend a half hour on his firing range and answer a few questions of mine?

I definitely get more bullet drop with the .338, though it's only really noticable at 300m+ range.
I wish someone could test other 'heavy' guns, see if some match the .338
And the '75m effective range' ammo guns intrigue me.

.308 is about equal to the M1 and .303, and those three form a trio of weapons that are the best class 4-8 rifles

.223 lacks power. i would use the .243 over that tbh

The .300 is the best large game rifle (class 7+) but if you don’t primarily hunt big animals, you can probably wait a bit to get it

This is true, the .338 has one of the more pronounced curvatures (more drop).
But you also have to add .22H and muzzleloader to that list. Possibly the air rifle and other DLC weapons. 🙂

At the engine level yes, it's not a thing. However all the in game weapons have a real life equivalent, which may or may not feature rifling.

Good point. I don't know for sure if its a smoothbore or rifled barrel. Although I think the game treats it as a rifle (fully accurate when accounting for bullet drop). I don't have smoking barrels though.

Well yes and no. Just because the rifling isn't modelled and physically simulated in-game doesn't mean the weapon represented in game stops being a "rifled" weapon.

There's no game afaik that simulates bullet spin or barrel friction so I really don't follow your path of logic at all.

Anyone willing to be a 'hunting guide' (multiplayer)?

I recently started over after getting level 60 (I want to try some alt mission endings). Currently level 18 but still feel i have much to learn.
I'm working my way through the game one map at a time, doing all the missions and unlocking/finding everything before moving on to
the next map. Currently on Layton. Some species I just find 'impossible'. Below is where I feel I am at in terms of hunting. In order of
preference according to how easy I find it.

Elk [Have the caller and can generally find somewhere at the right time to draw in]
Moose [Once heard, I generally have no issues hunting]
Deer [Struggle a little more than Elk, but can occasionally hunt times or draw in with bleat caller]
Coyote [Can't active hunt other than wander around aimlessly hoping to get lucky and hear one. Might manage to draw in with caller]
Bear [If hear i will try get line of sight. Often have to track some time before being able to take a shot if I'm lucky enough to get line of sight]
Jackrabbit/Duck [Don't even bother as I find them nigh on impossible]

If anyone is willing to play multiplayer and help a brother out in upskilling, it would be greatly appreciated. [DM me]

I'm no good in multiplayer because I don't use a mic these days. But I can give you some pointers.
Deer:
Keep in mind here are two different deer species on Layton, Whitetail and Blacktail. These are treated somewhat differently in terms of callers and scents. As well as location. I believe the blacktails have been moved to primarily the east side of the map recently, and you might struggle with the long range blacktail mission for that reason.
Also keep in mind there are two additional callers in addition to the one you mentioned.
The Snort wheese can attract males only, but is slightly weaker than the bleat box. The Deer Grunt caller is even weaker but has much better range.
You can also use scents to your advantage.
For bear and coyote try to scout around waters and rivers at their drink time (just find a drink time it will be universal for that animal on that map).
Jackrabbits and ducks can be shot at very long range using the .22LR or .22H as long as you know the bullet drop. If you have duck dlc I believe you'll have decoys, which are very helpful to draw in ducks so you can get them with a shotgun. Use the correct decoy and use 20 pieces of those.

The quail are pretty stupid and given the tall vegetation/crops on the map, I think the best method is to just get close to them by sound , then rush them and shoot them out the air with a shotgun.

When it comes to the bunnies, I have literally only seen one of those on Mississippi so I'm as stuck as you are on that one.
That being said, I sort of decided not to pursue them because imo the map design is horrible for rabbit hunting. Even if you manage to find some zones outside the tall crop sections of the map, if you kill those rabbits the game will replenish new rabbits elsewhere and it will get progressively worse as you stack bunnies in the tall grass and crop sections of the map.

It's more the little nuanced that may seem obvious to some players. Like I go to drink zones and they are more often than not empty.
Someone said the other day they can take up to 30 mins to arrive. Is that 30 mins realtime or 30 mins game time. Is that 30 mins
from the drink zone time or 30 mins from when I arrive? It's more these things I need to learn.

Basically what I need is 'A Beginner's Guide For Dummies'.
It's like your usual beginner guide but for thick folk like me and includes things like but not limited to:
How to launch the game
How to tell your left and right mouse buttons apart
What to tell your mother when she calls you for dinner and there's a really pretty gold ripe for the taking
Signs COTW is ruining your relationship with your GF

Although those last two may be more suited for advanced players and/or those with a social life.
