I'm gonna be a bit controversial and say the most fun G1 to hunt is the most fun G1 for you to hunt. If you don't like bear, then no matter how easy it could be, you won't have fun, but you may love moose and even though the grind is a bit harder, the animal itself is fun.

Issue is with some birds if you make a bad shot and they don't die right away, they can actually go into that "migrating" thing they do and the blood will disappear from the ground and it makes the bird unretrievable. It happened to me with Canada Goose lol

Ammunition and type can be just as important as the weapon. The ammunition will give you the game’s class range for integrity bonus.

As for spooking, wind direction of the scent you give off is huge. Sub ~180y/m on foot sound is also important, perhaps staying low until you’ve found a decent shot.

I like the drilling a lot because you can theoretically kill anything with it, but I’d say the sidearms dlc helps cover that awkward class 2-4 range
