I mentioned this a while back, it's because I snipe, specifically. Zarza has better recoil and reload than Virant. Virant has more ammo. In all other regards, they're completely identical, including ballistic trajectories.

Reload speed is largely irrelevant, so it comes down to whether you want less recoil or more ammo capacity.

Since I take shots from long range and use high zoom scopes, lower recoil is my preference, and I have never needed a 10rd magazine, so for me specifically, the Virant is a downgrade over the Zarza.

For someone running closer range or who isn't as experienced at shooting birds on the wing or running prey, the extra rounds of the Virant can be invaluable.

That being said, it is weird how the other birds need to be flying to be ethical trophy.

Because IRL bird hunters blast em off water and ground too, to make sure they ethically kill it and not wound it.

Letting them fly then blasting them irl has a chance to wound them or cripple them. So it's not as ethical.

The birds that can be grounded are far smarter than the birds that need to be in flight.

Like, Turkeys will spook at 150m if you so much as power walk, but Pheasants and Woodcock wait until you step on their tail feathers to fly.

No chokes at all. The "shot" rounds are disappointingly "gamified" to be difficult to use effectively, and have the sort of Call of Duty nonsense effects you may expect from a zombie game's shotguns.

The spread of shotguns change drastically depending on whether or not you're aiming. 💀

Buckshot and Slug class ratings vary, and 10ga is particularly powerful, even it's bird shot.

Though for most cases with bird shot specifically, the differences are minute, 10ga bird shot is both more powerful and has longer range than 12ga birdshot.

I just re-tested to confirm, so sorry for the late response.

.410, .20, and .12ga shells all fall off incredibly fast beyond 75m. All of them can technically hit 100m targets, but very poorly. At 75m zero, when aiming directly at a 100m target, the .410 averages 6 pellets hitting targets over 10 shots (meaning some shots don't land a pellet all).

20ga averages 20 per 10 shots, very consistently getting 2 pellets per shot.

12ga averages 70 pellets per 10 shots.

.10ga Plastic averages are impossible to count, because at 100m, so many pellets hit the target that they reset the target face.

This isn't a matter of spread, but ballistic drop. 10ga just has longer range, which requires less compensation at 100m ranges. It's also the only shotgun capable of hitting the 150m target.

I'm not 100% certain whether this is genuinely tighter spread or simply that larger shells have more pellets, and therefore a larger cloud of smoke, but look at these. As you can see the .410 clearly has a smaller footprint.

This is likely why my 10ga experience has been so good comparatively. It seems that most of it's pellets tend to form at the center, almost like a bullseye. I'm likely hitting targets more routinely with that cluster of pellets, rather than the spread shot around it.

Well, .410 only has a 40m effective range and can't even hit the 200m target because it's drop is so significant, aiming high enough to hit the target results in hitting the overhead range structure.

.20, .12 and .10ga all have identical ballistics at 200m.

At 300m, .12ga and .10ga are identical. .20ga, interestingly, maintains more energy and shoots higher. Not by much, but enough to see on target.

At 400m, none of the slugs are capable of hitting the target due to the same issue .410 faces at 200m.

Bows and crossbows both have a spook radius somewhere in the neighborhood of 75m, but it varies by species and by direction. Sound will travel further in a cone in front of you.

You can get some lucky Alerts at 60m, but reliable distance for genociding with bows, crossbows and the air rifle is about 75m.

Mobile pressure reduction. I can stalk hunt at long range and get the benefit of sitting in a stand. Layouts weigh less so they're easier to tote around.

Run around, spot target, drop blind, drop target, pick up blind and repeat.
