All maps have different species.. there is no best all around map. Thats just personal preference. And some maps have some advantages and are easier for certian species to grind.

I want to make sure I'm understanding dead zones and the animals need zone. So while an area is dead zoned let's say a drink zone. As long as that area remains dead zoned a drink zone will not appear inside of it correct? until that pressure drops and a new animal or herd like a solo is killed and relocates.

It’s really weird actually, the 10g shotgun has 50m longer range than the 12g

12g reaches to 100m and the pellets despawn, 10g reaches to 150m

But I’ve never gotten a kill with any birdshot beyond 102m with a 12g

The two 10g shooting plastic shotshells have 150m range, to be clear. The lever action shooting brass shotshells has the same projectile lifetime as the 12g and thus the same ~100m range cap

Yeah it depends. I use the 10gauge allot especially for geese. But I'll use the 12 on larger flocks if I think i need the extra shot Thats really good to know.

Nah purple zone is just the zone you fired the shot. He can run out of that area and die somewhere else.

It indicates parabolics. After 50m the round starts dropping, and by 150m it drops significantly.

You need to compensate twice as much for a 200m shot with 16ga slugs, as you do a 300m shot with the rifle round it uses.

Correct, penetration will still be affected regardless of zero.

Additionally, drop will still need to be accounted for when targeting shots in-between your zero ranges. For example if the 16ga zeroes at 100 and 150m, and you're shooting at 125m, you'll have to consider whether to zero to 100 and adjust up, or zero to 150 and adjust down. Though typically this only matters on small targets or if you're determined to brain or heart shot.

Yes, but penetration and bullet drop are affected. Depending on the caliber of round this makes a huge difference.

Large caliber, popular rifles like the .300 and .375 can basically ignore this, but shotgun slugs, handguns, class 2-6 rifles and especially the air rifle, are all notably affected.

Well.... Here's the thing. Expansion rounds tend to do 100-200% more dmg per organ hit, than penetration rounds of the same caliber. So an expansion round in and of itself is better than Pen rounds, when you're not trying to break through bone or shoot at extreme angles.

So not having an expansion round, shouldn't be an issue at all for anyone with skill.

That said, the 7.62x54R round itself is underwhelming for it's class rating. It's great for class 3-5 and fine for class 6, but even class 2-6 rifles like the
.257, outperform it on class 6.

All that said, it's coverage of 3-7 is nice, as not very many rounds offer that coverage, and while not particularly powerful it can take class 7 game. So if someone wanted a cheap round that can cover a wide variety of game, it's a serviceable choice.

It's not winning any awards though.

@azure crag It´s only real downside comes in the form of it´s available ammunition: The Solokhin only has access to Soft-Point rounds, wich limits its overall effectiveness a bit due to the lack of higher penetration. But dont let that fool you: While on paper it´s rounds have exactly the same penetration and expansion values as the Soft-Point rounds of the Ranger .243 (15pen and 17exp), the Solokhins 7.62x54R Soft Point Bullets have a decent amount more power behind them. This, in practice, means that they will usually penetrate a bit better and a bit deeper than the .243´s Soft-Point rounds at similar distances and therefore also penetrate more reliably at angles (provided the angle is not too steep).

So how exactly does the solokhin's 7.62 caliber get "more power" if it's the same stats as the ranger .243?

Well, couple things.

One, the wiki is mostly dumb, don't trust it too much.

Two, expansion and penetration stats aren't linear across all calibers.

Take the .44 and .45 Air, for example. Both of them have exactly the same Expansion rating (70) and nearly identical Pen (17 and 15, respectively). But the .44 is rated for class 3-8 while the .45 Air is rated for class 2-4.

The .44 HP rounds go through and through a Pronghorn at 200+m, but the .45 air rounds can't double lung at all outside of 100m, let alone pass through a Pronghorn.

So it's not enough to just look at the ratings and decide which round is better, you have to actually test them. I actually tested the 7.62 against the .257 against class 6 Blue Wildebeest. .257 is a more lethal round at 200m, despite the 7.62 being rated higher. It's a budget round with versatility in mind, not a major powerhouse.

Still, there's value in being cheap and versatile.

This is what I mean; rifles such as the Frost lose the ability to effectively double lung at longer ranges. Loss of penetration means loss of damage, ability to break bone, and ability to take harsh angled shots. Clean broadside become the only reliable recourse, so expansion rounds become considerably better options. But they're definitely not equally effective at all ranges.

As long as you don't kill that doe and 50% of the rest of the herd. Killing that 1 doe isnt going to hurt anything. And i believe just anytime an animal spawns it just goes into a loot table and has a chance to come back as a rare. I dont think you can have a max rare fur or anything like that.

yeah. unless you’ll be taking the time to make sure each shot is a perfectly zeroed broadside shot, you’ll want to be shooting the round with more penetration

When i first started i used the 243 with free ammo for the longest time and seemed fine.

Nothing wrong with either. I just insta fell in love with game and got weapon packs. When you've paid cash money for guns you tend to use them more

with some exceptions.

.300 and .338 soft points basically act as polymer rounds within 150m, even on class 9 animals, for example.

Other calibers such as .375 have less impressive expansion ammo.

Additionally, if you're shooting game at the lower-end of a caliber's rating, such as shooting class 3-4 with a class 3-8 caliber, or class 4-5 with a class 4-9 caliber, the soft points will basically make all shots act as heart shots and drop game immediately.

And finally, at extensive ranges (300-400m), where penetration is no longer reliable, expansion rounds still drop considerably quickly.

Absolutely, but hitting heart shots at 300m+ isn't really something most folks are doing regularly.

I get a lot of 300 plus heartshots with the m1 iwaniec. It's usually cos I'm aiming higher for the distance so it lands lower and takes the heart. Never intentional lol

M1 is great. Love using a garand for deer even if it's an older gun

Yeah, you can instakill any game with any round if you place the shot just right. Hell, even my beloved air rifle can instakill class 4s.

@azure crag I tested drilling rifle caliber and then frost .257 vs wild boars

it feels like that for some reason the drilling caliber kills wild boars faster in lungs than .257
