Hey I actually just made a video debunking this silly argument.

Expansion rounds do 100% or more damage per organ hit. A single lung from an Expansion round is as good as, or better, than a double lung from that same caliber's penetration round. With certain rifles, on certain classes of animal, this becomes so painfully obvious it's borderline criminal to suggest penetration is always better.

Ranger .243 for example. Soft point ammo will drop a Gemsbok in 16 seconds when penetration ammo will drop it in 30.

Same for the .7mm with moose; the soft point ammo drops a moose in 12.5 seconds where the polymer rounds drop it in 26 seconds.

I did the tests. Tests show Expansion is absolutely valid in many situations.

Also you can triple organ every animal at any range with Expansion rounds. So there's that.

. 45 air, .44, .30-06, .338 and a few other calibers of round have particularly devastating expansion. The .300 and .338 both have enough penetration to work as if they were polymer rounds too, within 150-200m.

I asked in here earlier what the tankiest animal was and Cape Buffalo seemed to be the answer, so I tested with it and .300 soft points easily drop it within 3 seconds on a lung/liver shot, which is an easy shot to make at any range.

The TTK on class 6 animals is really slow compared to Soft Points. Like, the Frost's polymer rounds kill faster than the Ranger's Soft rounds, and the Ranger's Soft rounds kill twice as fast as it's own polymer rounds. 😆

At lower class engagements (2-4) this is less noticeable, but against class 5-6 it's pretty harsh.

Typically no, but you do need to be a bit above them, so your rounds all hit the ground. If you're mostly level they won't connect as reliably. You also have to be close; any further than 50m and it just spreads to far.

Do keep in mind I've only done this with the .10ga though. No idea if it works as well with other shotguns.

Jaw is not the skull 😆 Skull=horns in this case. You can also bypass skull if you hit just right on many animals, and brain them. You have to go through the eye or temple though.

There technically isn't a breakpoint. It depends on whether or not you can make a clean shot.

Can you hit vitals without breaking through bone or having the shot bounce due to severe angle? If yes Expansion. If no, Penetration.

There are some exceptions based on caliber, like the .300 and .338 have phenomenal soft point ammo, but the .375 does not, compared to it's pen rounds, but the vast majority of calibers have superior damage potential with their Expansion rounds.

Penetration is easier to reach it's max damage with, but pen round triple vital damage can't match expansion round double vital damage. There's an argument to be made for heart shots, but depending on the caliber used and the animal targets, the staple "lung-liver-stomach" shot instantly kills with expansion, and is easier to land.

Ultimately which round you prefer will come down to playstyle and skill level, but there's no real argument for polymer being better at upper end damage.

Pen rounds are user friendly, that's why they're recommended! Expansion rounds reward skill and well placed shots. Both have their place.

Oddly enough, I use Expansion rounds because pen rounds lose most of their penetrative capabilities at long range, but Expansion rounds retain their damage.

The single most valid reason to use polymers. Though, depending on the round you're using and the target you're shooting, you can actually drop game instantly as if it were a heart shot, by using expansion rounds.

For example, the ever-reliable .7mm magnum can instantly drop class 4-6 if you hit them at the back end of their lungs, where their liver and stomach intersect. You'll triple vital at any range and the soft points might as well be a bomb when it hits those vitals.

I've done testing on the .30-06, it's expansion rounds have just enough penetration to be used as if they were pen rounds at 150m or so, and the organ damage is really good.

Hollow-Point on class 3-4, Round Nose on Class 2, unless you get a perfect broadside then it doesn't matter.

The Cyclone doesn't have the damage output to be worth using on class 4 animals until you use it's Hollow-Points, which have ridiculous expansion.

Expansion will significantly improve TTK on large game animals, but will require you to avoid those shoulder bones at all costs.

I used the .7mm in my video to showcase this, but the same rule applies to the .30-06. Avoid the shoulder unless you're close.

I haven't tested TTK for .30-06 on moose, but for the 7mm the difference was soft rounds doing over 100% more dmg per organ hit. I imagine the .30-06 will do similarly well.

You can cover every single class of animal with 2 guns.

The .44 and the 10ga.

.44 covers class 3-8, and the 10ga birdshot covers class 1-2, while it's slugs cover class 9.

The biggest issue with this setup will be class 2, as the birdshot, while rated for class 2, can only reliably take them within 30m or so.

That's a shotgun and a revolver or a shotgun and a lever action rifle.

.45 works too. Class 2-7 is covered and the .10ga covers class 1, 8 and 9.

Any gun is the right one as long as it's rated for a specific class. No class 2-6 rifle is incapable of taking class 6, for example. Same for class 3-8, 4-9, etc.

I shot down pretty much everything with the 243 using the free ammunition for the longest time because I was cheap as hell and had 0 problems killing. Shoot things in the right locations with the right rating range for the ammo and they will go down.

this is mainly why I stick to polymer bc many times I’m targeting animals that are either quarter towards or quarter away— many times at night and at distance so it’s difficult to see—the penetration helps cut through bone and other non vital organs when necessary

But yeah while that is a possibility, I don't think it's necessarily the case simply because the ribs aren't rendered. They literally have every bone in a rabbit's foot accounted for, if the ribs were actually in the model I'd think they'd include that too.

It is entirely possible there's some sort of bonus around the idea of ribs being there, but I think it's more likely just the increased flesh from the shoulder. The game takes even the TINIEST graze of fur and treats it as a full impact, so weird stuff can happen.

Like this, a bolt that would normally pass entirely through a bear, doesn't hit at all, because I hit a whisker.
