I was kidding, my name should have given it away but the Cyclone, while it is a fantastic, stealthy alternative to the .223, is not high powered. It can actually kill any animal if you place your shots right, but all weapons are capable of doing that, even the .22lr.

The real answer to the question of what's the best gun, is that there simply isn't one. The game isn't balanced that way.

The rifle with the highest power is the King, but it's exclusively class 9 and will ruin the trophy rating of class 1-8 animals.

There are numerous options that cover specific ranges of animal, however, that perform really well and are easy to use, so if you want a class range to focus on, like say 4-8, there are recommendations for that. But there isn't a single gun that performs really well against everything.

Well... The Crossbow does, but it's not a gun.

I've been messing with it and even it's free soft round ammo can effectively hunt at 400m. It takes some learning how Expansion rounds actually work (which the community seems to be allergic to) but once you figure it out you can turn the .243 into a pure profit machine.

Absolutely, if the polymer round of the caliber you use can double lung at the range you're using it, it's absolutely superior.

Expansion rounds are much more niche and only really worth using in 2 scenarios-

1: you're a bad shot and you want to cull game with Flesh wounds that bleed out. High expansion rounds do this really well, while being cheaper, at the cost of ruining trophy rating. For culling, that downside doesn't really matter.

2: You're a great shot and know how to guarantee the Expansion round you're using will penetrate a single lung, but the Polymer round you're using can't double lung. In a scenario where both the Penetration and Expansion rounds can only single lung, the Expansion round will drop the target 2-3 times faster.

One example of this is the Cyclone; at 150m, on Pronghorn, both the Round Nose (pen) and Hollow-Point (Expansion) ammo can only penetrate single lung. If you single lung with the Round Nose, the Pronghorn will run, on average, 150m before dying.

With Hollow-Point, at the same distance, the pronghorn might make it 50m before dropping.

The difference between how quickly a target will drop with one round or the other will vary wildly by caliber, target animal and distance, but Expansion focused rounds always deal more per-organ damage than Pen rounds of the same caliber. They're just harder to use.

one thing i WISH we could do is switch ammunition types like we can sights. that way shotguns would be SUCH a viable option. maybe tweak shotgun performance to work better with bird/buck/slug depending on the type to balance it out obv

True, they're more selective and really only matter when firing at extreme ranges or in niche scenarios. I don't dispute for a moment that Penetration rounds are the easier/layman's round. Expansion is very much for minmaxing and simulation play.

One way to locate most of your mule spots is to camp lakes and the river during their drinking time and spot them. If you find a large or promising herd you can follow them to other need zones once they finish drinking. This is a slow process but can pay off in the long run, unless you just want to focus on drink zones.

Pretty sure it's in it's own DLC, it can call any callable species on any map, and you can set the calls for 2 species at once. It has a 200m signal range as well so you can set the caller as far as 200m away from you, to help manage where the targets go. This is great compared to traditional callers, where the animals walk up to you and spook eventually.

It's actually really easy to use! You place the caller down like any other structure, and then you have a little remote to cycle calls and turn them on/off. It even has a toggleable feature that will stop the caller when you shoot.

I find the larger, slower rounds tend to hold their power better, and handle targets at the end of their class range, better than high velocity, accurate rounds. The 7mm for example, absolutely dominates classes 4-6 but really struggles to take class 8-9 at long range, whereas something like the 45-70 just doesn't seem to notice or care what range it's fired at, as long as you can compensate for the bullet drop and hit the target.

All animals are killed if you brain them, and you can avoid the skull by shooting either through their eye or in various other small weak points. You can do this with literally any gun but it's especially funny when you consider the .22lr is the weakest rifle in the game. But quiet!

Highly recommend. If you want to really fine-tune how accurate the crossbow can shoot, swap the scope's default sight for the Mil-Dot 02 sight customization, then zoom in to 4x (the max is 5, so 1 click less).

At that zoom and with that sight, each Mil-Dot will represent 25m of drop from center crosshair, so the 4th mil-dot pretty much perfectly zeroes at 150m, and if you use the bottom of the crosshair, it zeroes at 175m.

It's likely that your time of day is just coinciding either with their travelleing from need zones or visiting them.

Consider yourself lucky, as black bear are a pain in the butt to grind compared to herding animals.

If you want to focus on whitetail set your time to 9am and scout water sources.
