Weapon Balance & Economy Improvement Proposal

Hi, I’d like to share a short proposal focused on weapon balance and the in-game economy in theHunter: Call of the Wild.

Currently, a few meta weapons (especially .300 AR) are used for almost everything, which makes many weapon classes feel cosmetic and reduces variety during grinding.

Proposed change: Economy penalties for oversized calibers

Instead of hard restrictions, introduce money penalties:

1 class too high → –20% money

2 classes → –40%

3 classes → –80%

4+ classes → –100%

This keeps freedom of choice, but rewards proper caliber use and increases weapon diversity. Class 6 animals would still be viable with class 7-9 weapons with only a small penalty.

Handgun balance (optional)

Current handgun penetration feels overtuned:

.357: 50 → 35 mm

.44: 70 → 45 mm

.454: 100 → 60 mm

Optional content idea

A lever-action weapon pack (.357 / .454 / new .500 Magnum class 5–9) could become a strong mid-high tier alternative to .300 AR and add variety to grinding.

These changes would improve balance, immersion, and long-term gameplay without removing player freedom.

Yes, I have all female and all male herds but it was a mistake. Having all female herds means some herds will end up with so many males you risk soft-locking their respawns, because you need at least 2 members of a herd alive to respawn the ones you shot. I try to keep at least 2 females to a herd now as a result of making a few male-only and female-only herds.

You can swap the places of males and females just like you can swap the places of different males; shoot a female in one herd and some males in another, and there's a chance that female will swap places with one of the males you shot.

You have to do this slowly though or you could cause herds to split, so 1 or 2 females per herd are all you can shoot at a time.

For all female elk and red deer it's a bit different because those species are designed to have female herds and male solos, with a few small exceptions. I haven't tried comingling that species and do not know if or how it would work. I'm really only experienced with herd managing class 1-4 animals and a scant few class 5s.

Fallow hunting in Scotland is incredibly good. I was primarily grinding on Hirschfeld until I visited Scotland and immediately abandoned Hirsch lol. Fallow are so gorgeous.

Yeah pop those solos and their herd should respawn in full. I made that mistake with quite a few herds when I first started out. I also "musical-chaired" some herds into being all male and all female so I have a couple herds with all male lvl 3s and I can only shoot 2 or 3 at a time or they will move to God knows where 😆

Red Deer and a few other large deer species seem to naturally have solo herds and all female herds. They seem to have a (slightly) more complex herd system where the males are in their own herd but very loosely follow the female herds and share similar zones. Though I have seen the occasional herd of females with a male or two that seem to be directly part of their herd. I don't hunt them often enough to understand them though.

Sadly no, herds will not respawn if only 1 member is left. You will need to kill the last member and the entire herd will respawn elsewhere, as will their need zones.

If you're finding areas with small herds that you haven't hunted before, they're likely just small herds. If you're hunting a particular species, some only spawn as single or double herds.

Intensity is really the only difference. I'm excessively casual about my HM grinds, but while I'm not dedicating days of play time to it, and set them up over time as I do other things, the end result is the same but much slower and more relaxed. I've been slowly setting up a whitetail grind over the last 4-5yrs or so and just got my primary and exterior herds where I want them, and started setting up feeders. Someone else who was more focused could have accomplished it in 2 or 3 weeks I'm sure, but the process would have been the same, more or less.

No sadly if you somehow have a herd of 2, both animals need to be dropped for them to respawn. If shoot all but 1 animal in a herd it just doesn't respawn until that last one is gone. At which point the herd will respawn elsewhere.

The hollow points. The .22lr truncated are basically just for culling large game. Small game will drop from their expansion rounds at literally any range, even if you just nick the feather of a turkey it's done for. It's cheaper ammo too, so win-win.

It does a fine job of it, but you need to use the HP rounds. Class 1 is really odd because the animals are more affected by trauma than organ shots, but the .22lr seems better than the Hornet because the .22lr's truncated rounds have comical penetration compared to the Hornet's. But if you use HP rounds, the Hornet will perform quite well on class 1.

Ideally you want to get between 15 and 20 males to cycle through, to ensure respawns happen. More is better, as the more males you can cycle through, the higher chances of a better deer spawning overall. But practically speaking, go for however many herds it takes to get around 20 males at least.

I have scouted 30+ herds of whitetail and have made 8 of them primary, with each herd averaging 3.5 males, for 28 bucks to cycle.

It's inefficient. Respawns happen every 15-30min as long as you kill a certain amount of animals, so jumping to every zone possible is just a waste of time. Shooting trivial bucks can eventually have them respawn as lvl 2s and 3s and such, but the chances are much smaller than just focusing on good bucks to begin with, and since you can constantly cycle through 5-10 herds depending on how many males there are, and by the time you get to your last herd the first herd is respawned, you can focus on the best animals for the highest chance of good trophy spawns.

It's absolutely possible to just kill every buck in every zone and eventually get a Dime/G1, but you won't be killing more animals per hour compared to an efficient grind setup.

Slugs are a bad choice beyond 100m in my experience, even the 10ga can't effectively take a Banteng beyond 100m.

Handguns are a slightly different story. I regularly assassinate class 8s at 300m with the 45-70.

I think it will depend on the ballistics of those calibers more than anything else. The tricky bit about using handguns is landing long range shots, as they often have shorter effective ranges and steeper bullet drop at long range, but otherwise possess similar performance to similar rifle calibers. I haven't tested many handguns, but the ones I have tested perform well outside of their listed effective range.

They can! It's also possible for lvl 2s to respawn at lvl 2. Either of these things happening is typically rare, as lvl 1s are as rare as lvl 3s, but it absolutely does happen.

I mean bullet drop and parabolic "lifetime", yeah. Some weapons such as the
22mag have notable drop compared to the .22h for example, so while they both have somewhat comparable parabolics within 200m, the differences between the two become notable at 300m and drastically different at 400m.

You can estimate which zone is his based on his direction of travel and time of day. Was he going northeast just before or during a need zone timeframe? If there's a need zone in his direction of travel that he would likely arrive at from his direction of travel, that's your best bet.

So zone times aren't concrete, if it was mid-drinking time and he was leaving a drink zone, it's likely he got to the zone early and is heading to the next, possibly a rest or feed depending on the time. If you know he was leaving a zone though, you know he'll return.

Depends on species and to a degree, luck. There are always a few diamonds and near diamonds on a map fresh spawn, so your hunt could be the very first animal you see or just a single respawn in. Or you could settle on areas that take a long time to produce one, or make zones that are nothing but potential dimes after a while
