If you have gun dlc packs, I really reccommend the moonlight rifle and those similar looking ones (ambusher? I think for class 2-4) for middle-upper class(4-6 or 7?). The grilling deck which is a rifle/ shotgun so you can switch between the two ammo types. I use the Rifle part for upper class (8-9) and shotgun for birds/ class 1 with the birdshot.
Those really helped when I first started and I still use my moonlight a lot.

Personally the other shotgun ammos (like the buckshot and slugs) come in handy when you're getting charged at. I get charged by moose cows a lot, and bison and wolves occasionally. Close range blast usually puts em down fast or makes em run off if you dont like carrying a handgun for protection.
