Originally throughout what is now Egypt, Turkey, and Syria, although through trade and contact they spread to earlier European groups, including the Celts that then inhabited the southern mediterranean and then moved northward and modified the intrument to create different sustained not and chord profiles

by around 450AD what we would recognize as a modern bagpipe existed in what is now England and Scotland
