All sorcerer subclasses are each bound to own element. And then you have discharge, which can be converted by skill orbs. So if you want to play with fire or cold spec, you are tied to specific skill orb for run start, removing other possible choices, and there is a lot of good stuff on sorc. So you are either giving everything in hands of RNG gods, praying for luck if you start with fire/cold conversion and not choosing mana/health on crit, or you can just build lightning and not care that much. And that's a thing you cannot simply chose mid-run, like "oh, nice, i got fire conversion orb, lets do fire this time". You are preparing for specific element by choosing subclass, gear bonuses, drink bonus for specific element.
I'm not sure what's the best possible solution here would be, but i just had a thought: how about tying conversion for discharge (including bonuses: chain for lightning, pierce for fire, lesser cone for cold) to subclass choice instead of skill orbs?

Tie it into the mastery passive i suppose is a good idea
To be honest i have a different issue. Fire and cold discharge have like no unique passives at all
I think cold ray literally only gets range up.
@hearty lynx Range upgrade is available to all types of discharge. And pierce on fire conversion is very nice for clear, i used fire discharge early and it carried me to lvl 20 easily. It just requires much more luck for runs to get all other upgrades needed, especially mana on crit for mana sustain.
i think its fine. I didnt struggle with sustain at all even as i combo elemental orb with affinity conversion
Is your actives higher than lv2?
I keep mine at lv2.
Yep, and levels could increase whatever bonuses conversions have right now: amount of pierces for fire, chains for lightning, something for cold (didn't play cold version yet).
I'm not using elemental orb, it would make getting right upgrades even harder than it is now.
Elemental orb is strong before subclassing
Specced out of it now though
But be mindful of element + weapon pairing.
And i used lvl 2 discharge for some time, yep, but now it's level 4 with -mana cost on boots and as a starting blessing.
Frost ray is high 1target so your weapon wants crowd clear.
Lightning is the opposite
I think you want staff for lightning and frost
Lightning rmb and frost lmb + rmb
I'm a shield slave for now, even with low lvl shield flat 30 reduction for projectiles is very nice, since i rarely get health on crit upgrade and have to rely on passive regen/potions 😄 And using a nice wand with spell crit and penetration.
I have like 30% crit or so at run start.
I got to boss 6 with a lv1 sorc using frost and staff
Let me be the one to tell you no shield is perfectly okay
I got it in a single run with fire discharge from level 1 🙂
With a crap gear since it was my first caster.
I had decent gear. 50 ice pen
Beat Avatar with a power of fire discharge and skill upgrades 😄
But yeah uh. My idsue with discharge usnt being forced to pick element convert.
Its that only lightning gets 2 upgradable passives
