Hello.

I am looking for one or more long-term Valheim and otherwise general gaming friends that are on the same wavelength as me. Over time, we could potentially build into a small group of 3~4, but finding even just one person would be great!

In general, I consider myself a “casual gamer with an ex-hardcore’s mindset.” I still tend to be focused on “the goal” and “efficient gameplay.” However, I’ve relaxed with age and nowadays I am more interested in social gaming. I no longer grind content treadmills and I use whatever equipment I feel like playing, rather than what is mathematically “the best.” I despise “the meta,” but effectiveness still factors into my preferences.

Since I still care about goals and efficiency in my own way, I don’t just goof off and run around like a lot of social gamers do. There’s always a purpose behind my actions. Even if the amount of time I put into things like aesthetic building is wildly “inefficient” from a progress perspective, any base I build is meant to be used. I scatter camps across the land, and they serve as a way to explore the area and do gathering “on site.” I build roads for navigation in mapless worlds. Ports are a place to store and protect ships, as well as to drop off materials and cart them back to a main base.

Since I enjoy building, when I play in groups I am often the de facto builder, and although I’m fine with that role it also means that everyone else ends up running out and exploring the whole area before I get a chance to. I would prefer to build in a more co-operative way. Instead of having one player build everything, I would like to try building village-style compounds where each player builds their own house inside a larger common area. Then we can set out to explore and gather resources as a group as well.

My play time is another legacy of my hardcore days. Gaming is my primary hobby and I play games every day after work (6:00~9:30pm) as well as liberally on my days off, usually amounting to around 8 hours, factoring in breaks and errands. I would like to play with someone who can keep up with that pace. However, most people my age (32) don’t have so much free time. So, failing that, the most important thing is having a regular schedule. Though I’m usually the type to binge on a single game before burning out, if it’s for social gaming I don’t mind playing only periodically so long as I know that we will actually continue consistently and the world isn’t just going to be abandoned.

Although talking about the game is fine for online gaming friends, it would also be nice to actually get to know each other personally and chat about life, work, and so on. Personal compatibility is important for this, so here’s a brief rundown of myself.

【Nationality】Canadian expat in Japan
【Age】32
【Job】Teacher
【Values】Liberal・Egalitarian・Individuality・Mutual Cooperation/Community Living
【Likes】Nature・Games・Language・Coffee・Small communities
【Dislikes】Consumerism・Superficiality・Drugs・Alcohol・Scented products・Chic・Popularity/Fads
【Gaming】Survival・Roguelikes・MMOs・Indies (I don’t play AAA, nor most mega-hits)

And here’s a brief version of my Valheim preferences:

【Build Our Way】
・No map. Portals: Any setting OK.
・Build together. Work together. Move together.
・Build for both aesthetics and purpose.
・Roughly 50-50 split on building/exploration time.
→ My average major base building time: 10~100 game days.
→ My average camp building time: 5~20 game days.

【Pace】
・Play regularly (at least once a week).
・Progress slowly but steadily.
→ My single player clear time was 1000 game days (with map).
→ Around 700~2000 game days to clear would be a good pace.

Whew. You’d think I’m writing this for some sort of extremely detailed matchmaking service. But maybe that thought is just a product of the digital age. People these days don’t communicate in much detail. While I know that I am a bit of an outlier in terms of how open and communicative I am, I do expect others to be at least forthcoming enough to give me an idea of who they are. Lots of people message in response to posts here. Most amount to “yo, i’m interested. we’ve got a dedicated server hmu if you wanna join.” These kinds of responses will be ignored.

Ultimately, though, writing only goes so far. There’s no way to know whether we’ll get along until we try playing together. The detailed introduction is just an attempt to improve the odds.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,

~Noct~

Hey, Noct! so i've been playing at a server with long term gameplay, no map no portal and with roles, so not everyone doing all the things. Its a slow progression server. if you are interested i could connect you with its admin, Floof. There is Server posting in the channel too! right now we are in the Iron Age

# vapid grove Hey, Noct! so i've been playing at a server with long term gameplay, no map no p...

Hmm... It sounds like an interesting concept. I wouldn't mind trying, and my current new character could hop in pretty easily since they're about to go into the swamp, but I feel like I might struggle to play that slowly, actually. I could be a road builder, but if everyone is supposed to proceed together then that limits the amount of road that I can build, and once I finish building roads around the current area I'd end up swapping to something else like building or gathering and could end up quickly doing way too much and eclipsing everyone else if I'm playing 4~8 hrs a day.

Is this a dedicated server or is it personally hosted?

Its a dedicated server, and you must create a new char 😁 as long as you don't progress more than the server progress it should be okay.

@tired matrix Hey! I would be interested in something long-term and would love to make friends to play Valheim with. To be honest, I haven't been playing videogames for a long time. Taking that into consideration is a must for me, since I can sometimes be unaware of some in-game dynamics that gamers are often familiar with, at least the most mathematical, meta factors.

That being said, Valheim is my favorite game that I've played so far and I've always played with my favorite equipment regardless of whether it's "best", too. I also love the idea of a "lived-in" server, so I love with the idea of scattering buildings across the map.

I am also very regular on my schedules and can commit to playing regularly as well. Regarding compatibility, I can also provide the following information about myself:

Nationality: Mexican
Age: 29
Job: Data Analyst and I do translation as a side gig.
Values: Liberal, egalitarian, I believe in kindness, understanding, compassion, and critical thinking.
Likes: Literature, Gaming, Art History, Museums, Genuine connection

Valheim preferences:
-Map and portals but I'm open to the frustration of getting lost in a mapless word and not getting angry if I'm rage baited for it.
-Building a lot and making it pretty or at least an interesting building experience
-I don't have an average camp building time but if the conversation is great I might be a slow builder.

As far as time zone differences, I'm usually up at the time you specify since I work on a different time zone than CST. If you're interested then I'd have to check on the weekends since the time zone difference might be an issue those days.

I'd love to hear from you, though!

@tall galleon Hello. Thanks for your thoughtful response. It does sound like we'd be on the same page, so I'd be happy to make a world with you and give it a try.

Playing with a map is not a deal breaker for me. In fact, I actually prefer having the map in a lot of ways. One downside to mapless play is that it's very difficult to judge where I want to build. I could be standing a short distance away from a gorgeous locale and never know it. Having the map lets me find and mark those kinds of places. The downside is that stuff like building roads becomes an almost purely aesthetic project and I often find myself just watching the mini-map as I run instead of taking in the sights. Anyways, either way is fine with me. I just put "No Map" in my post because it is what I had in mind for the whole "Build Your Way" concept.

I've got a pretty free weekend, so I'm available at probably any time over the next couple of days, provided it's not when I'm sleeping. It sounds like you run on a different schedule on the weekends, though, so let me know when/if you're available. I'm about to go to bed here. I'm not up at a very consistent time on weekends, but I should be available starting from no later than 9:00am JST.
