Skills level up quite fast from 0, and weapons with no skills aren't ineffective enough to keep players from trying them.

That's just not true, it levels up twice as fast as any melee, resulting it it outpacing in damage increases and stamina reduction any weaponry.

The spear usage are meant to mesh with a shield, it's definitely not designed like most spears would be, but that's where the Atgeir comes into play.

The attack animations allow for a lot of flexibility, you can rapidly attack you enemy without much risk in the attack speed keeping you from throwing out your shield to parry or block.

Where a knife has a mix of attack speeds in the combo and can result in some timing differences.

The spear's combination of speed and damage also gives it far greater staggering power than one might expect. Small hitbox, yes, but very powerful within that area.

It's literally the whole point of a spear (pun intended). It's a long pointed stick so you can jab em from a good distance

with much faster startup than the axes
but everything else about it is so terrible haha (mainly being unusable in coop)

"This year" is not confirmed info, Iron Gate hasn't given any release timeline for Deep North 1.0 update.
But to answer your question: you don't necessarily need to start new game as long as you keep current placeholder Deep North area mostly unexplored. But developers usually recommend/encourage to start new world for whole experience after bigger updates, 1.0 update will also add achievements.

Atgeir is strong weapon type. It has AoE 360° swipe as secondary attack with huge knockback and stagger. Even trolls get easily staggered by it and they're also weak against pierce damage.

Slash damage is more effective. Axe, sword or bear claw weapon (which requires killing 2 non starred of them).

You dont neccesarily need to make a sword to fight the bear but take advantage of weaknesses and take notes of resistances

To simplify put, certain creatures have weaknesses and resistances

Bears for example have resistances to pierce and blunt, but take normal dmg via slash dmg

There are 3 types of damages

Grey colored damage = resistance to that physical dmg type

White colored damage = normal damage

Yellow colored damage = indicates enemy is weak to that physical dmg type and take more damage

Battleaxes were the most reliable measure for me during my Very Hard playthrough, and even before the new Battleaxes were added, I was still able to utilize the Crystal Battleaxe up to the Ashlands with no issues.

The secondary is unmatched in my opinion, using it while undetected results in a lot of stagger potential.

My favorite gear has always been the heavy armor, but I also had to rely on meads a little more, if you want to free up that inventory space, the set bonuses from lighter armors can offer more flexibility.

Later materials are generally stronger but enemies will only attack walls if there's no other way to reach their target so getting outside during a raid will keep your base safe

Every tenth of a second, Valheim checks if there are any new zones nearby that need to be generated. Zones are generated on the main thread so this delay prevents noticeable freezing when many new zones need to be generated.
A zone begins as a scene containing just a water plane and terrain heightmap. The heightmap calculates its height before objects are generated. Biome information is saved to this heightmap, each corner can hold a unique combination of biomes.
When generating objects, locations will be placed first. The positions of locations are determined when the world is generated and each zone can only have one location. After this, vegetation is placed. This includes any less significant object such as trees, mushrooms, rocks and ore. These are not pre-determined in worldgen, their positions are calculated during zone generation. Finally a spawn system object is added to the zone which controls randomly spawning objects, mostly creatures but some effects use spawners too.

Pretty sure they resist everything, I just smash birch trees together and broke some camps to get a finewood bow before even entering BF so I was able to just slowly kill it with my bow and then I eventually had the bear materials for a full set and fists, at which point I could parry the weak slash attack

But if you "canonically" enter the BF with some deer armor, a crude bow and a flint axe and dont know how to cheese it (because its AI is the dumbest of any mob in the game), I feel like thats quite a bad matchup for a beginner

Nah, Joel figured it out a while ago.
Issue with club knockback is that it scales with skill level. The base amounts on each weapon are fine. The ramping up is what takes it over the edge.

So I started a solo world to not advance my duo world(agreement we made) and my seeds been pretty nice. Got a shack on the water, tons of storage, enough copper that got me pretty much everything t3, got my troll hide set up to 4, the grind was real. I still barely explored any of my starter island. Should I just explore it fully now before I sail off, make sure there isn't a swamp near by?
I still need a kittle, cauldron, and a fermenter, and a t3 forge. Haven't built a single portal yet because it's less then a 2 minute sail with a boat load and copper/tin has been generous...and I guess I'm not sure what to do now

heh, never capsized in 1900+ hours, happened twice in few days... sea "sinkholes" appeared near swamp shores multiple times ("squares" of sea with no water), sailing towards it made boat capsize immediately and then character falling "down" like it was world's border... i'm playing on a laptop these months and i'm forced to keep graph settings almost at minimum, suspecting it's that since it's the only thing that changed recently (call to arms update didn't do that on my regular pc)... still dubious if that huge kinf of "bug" can happen by just altering graph settings..

What I do is, once I beat the Black Forest, get Iron and get to do a Stonecutter, I move my base to an island that has access to a Black Forest, a Swamp and a Plains biome, no matter how small they are. So, if you want to, you can just avoid making a huge base in your starter island and look for a better place to settle

Lucky finding Haldor! In my solo world I found Hildir first after sailing south. I had The Elder spawn like 4 km away from spawn (found 2 Vegvisirs, one pointed 4km north, the other 4km south). Got lucky with Haldor as well, sailing north from Hildir into a Black Forest and finding Haldor there.

For reference, 4km is like halfway across the map

What's your jump ? Increase that. Try dragging them into other biome using bow and arrows see if they chase a deer or something like that, then run up and snag the gear. Pop a bonemass just in case and have stamina potions on hand

Probably would have to put a good bit of spawn protection around the outside of the base. Specifically stopping enemies from spawning near the water

walls for me purely serve the purpose of obscuring attackable-looking things from the sight of randomly spawning enemies.
during an invasion, i run outside the walls to immediately grab the attention of the horde - they won't scratch the base if they have a player to attack instead

yes, the game rolls a 20% chance to try and start a raid on your current position every 46 minutes. in the case of almost all raids, this can only happen if you're within 40 meters of at least 3 player base structures

so raids can only ever happen exactly where you are, centered on your position

I also underestimated wolves and got wrecked first playthrough, my technique was to hit them as they charged me, usually staggering them

Make sure to eat swamp food and not venture into the mountains at night

Personally I recommend going with two health foods and a stamina food

With some swamp armor (or even fully upgraded black forest armor) and decent food it should take a non-starred wolf I'd say at least like 3 hits to kill you (on normal difficulty)

And parry should work fine against them assuming you're not running around without any food eaten or trying to parry with your fists, but timing can be tricky when you're new. Anyways I'd suggest using something like a bow or spear to kill or stagger them at range, or a well timed secondary attack from a sword or mace to kill them right as they reach you

Iron armor is definitely a nice boost yeah if you can get it upgraded too. It does slow you down a little too though
