#Black screen when using -vulkan and alt tabbing in/out of TF2

Hello, my problem is exactly as the title states. Never used to happen, as I used to alt tab constantly since I have 1 monitor. I'm not sure what changed as I haven't touched my TF2 files in months and I barely play the game these days. I would say I first noticed this maybe about a month ago? It does not happen if I remove the -vulkan launch option. Disabling fullscreen optimizations doesn't seem to change anything.

If there's nothing that can be done I will just stop using -vulkan, but I do enjoy the performance increase I got from it. I use DX 100. Let me know what specs or additional info, if any, is necessary. Thank you!

iirc there have been a couple of lads with a similar issue

#

Try what is linked there

#

something something presentation models

#

something something nvidia sucks

i think I once found a source 1 issues repo post by misyl that said its a nvidia issue and that there's nothing that they could do to fix it (although the reason they cited seemed inaccurate, but they never replied when I asked them to elaborate :/)

Does this happen only with Fullscreen mode, or also with Borderless?

Should be under the 2 - Sync and Refresh section

wanton rapids
#

Mkay gotcha but even after ticking the Shown unknown settings option that value doesn't appear for me in the flags oddly

visual halo
#

on the second one, it's a manually set value

wanton rapids
#

OH I see that step was referring to the setting not the preset values

#

mb

#

alright ill give it a shot now and ill let u know

#

it didnt work sadly

#

I tried it on fullscreen, windowed, and borderless windowed

visual halo
#

Just to make sure, did you apply the profile after configuring it?

wanton rapids
#

yep

visual halo
#

Normally whenever you get "flashes" when alt-tabbing is due to the display switching modes, which could be caused by resolution changes, refresh rate changes, or the DWM taking control of the display from an application running in legacy fullscreen exclusive.

wanton rapids
#

fair ask though

visual halo
#

In the case of Vulkan applications, with the latest NVIDIA drivers, the third one is implicit unless you force it through profile inspector.

#

-# thank NVIDIA for that

#

I wouldn't know other things to check other than making sure your in-game resolution and refresh rate match the one from your desktop.

#

Normally it wouldn't matter, but it's better than nothing.

wanton rapids
#

resolution matches and my monitor's 144hz on desktop, i run TF2 uncapped but with 295fps frame cap via nvidia

#

i am on the latest driver for my 2070 (581.80) so its probably just nvidia things like you and fiend suggested

#

i can live with opengl, bit of a shame but its better than the stupid 2 seconds of purgatory when alt tabbing lmao

ToGL, DirectX_9-to-OpenGL, is not used, and can not be activated on Windows, contrary to DXVK, Dx9-to-Vulkan.

wanton rapids
#

oh ur so right

rotund knoll
#

Removing the launch command "-vulkan" you are just gonna use DirectX_9.

wanton rapids
#

i wasnt even thinking of that

#

ye i meant dx

#

:P

#

sorry for the mixup

There's no problem. Just wanted to clarify.

#

Btw, before a "clean install of Windows again", might as well try out Linux?

Distros like Fedora KDE are pretty human to use, and honestly if you want to buy an SSD the end is night because of all those grottesque G-AI servers in America raising the prices of SSDs and RAM...

#

Before an upgrade I too had the RTX 2070 and I've used it for over a year on Linux.

Both RTX and DLSS worked, period.

Granted, you lose the Nvidia app and Nvidia Control Panel, but it's not the end of the world...

in years past i did use linux albeit not fedora but i wound up switching for reasons i dont quite recall at this moment, but tbh I intend to give linux another go in ~a yearish time because at that point the ESU will be ending for w10 and i'd use that opportunity to experiment with linux some more instead of just immediately jumping ship to w11

#

im aware there's further support through IoT and shit but meh

#

reinstalling windows or OS swapping would be a monumental headache for myself and my workflow so im pushing it off, its not a bad idea though

#

though for giggles i might just dual boot and see what happens for curiosity sake

#

appreciate the input from you all btw, thank you

Long story short @wanton rapids :

Some games, like Valorant, Fortnite, Rainbow 6 and Battlefield 6 just straight up don't work on Linux because Activelly Unsupported by the Devs. Then some work software either doesn't run (Adobe) or doesn't work (yes, even the native DaVinci on Arch isn't just a walk in the park).

Because of these mere facts, I'd still advice you to dual-boot if you need such software to run.
If not, you can just install Linux.

I've tried out Fedora KDE for 2 years, since the end of 38, because so I could still dual boot if it got borked (it did twice) and I wasn't under pressure to learn immediately to have it work NOW.
I guess you are european like me, if you have cover since next october, so I advice you do the same:
Get a small SSD for the OS, and a larger one for data and games (also for performance reasons, don't want to write too much here) and get Fedora on there.
You can choose the Spin you most like.

If you want help/support with this, since this is a TF2 server, we may do things through DMs.

I won't send any link, you'll just google the pages yourself.
